์œค์ˆœ์ง„.Fine dust is recognized as a social hazard, due to its negative health implications and potential impacts on the climate. With such dangers, the media can influence the judgement and actions of individuals. Modern media relies on video forms of communication, especially since news consumption is increasing rapidly on platforms accessible from PC and mobile devices, most notably YouTube. Within YouTube, thumbnail images heavily influences usersโ€™ video selection. Thumbnails draw usersโ€™ attention and encourages clicks. It can also act as a communication device, providing users with information through visual messaging. Therefore, this investigated how fine dust is perceived and communicated by analyzing thumbnail images of news reports regarding fined dust on YouTube. Content analysis was used to understand the frames used to depict fine dust, and the differences that may exist according to video upload date or channel. YouTube channels of 9 major broadcasting networks were selected, with thumbnails of videos uploaded from January 5, 2015 to September 30, 2020. Results showed the most common frame used was the response frame with a total of 677 cases(41.01%), followed by the danger frame (582 cases, 35.25%), and the cause frame (246, 14.90%). Next, frequency analysis was used to find the frequency of videos by year. Results showed the frequency of video uploads increased with higher concentrations of fine dust. This was especially the case in 2019, when fine dust levels were most severe, which showed a huge spike in the number of videos uploaded. Also, from December to March, in months when fine dust levels are higher, video reports on fine dust increased. Finally, content analysis was used to find the most frequent images used, and the visual frames they convey. The most common image used were landscapes of Korean cities enveloped in fine dust particles (408, 29.07%). The tones of such images were calm, and colour codes simple, often depicting major tourist attractions within Seoul. These images emphasize the severity of the fine dust levels. Such images may be effective in getting public attention, however may lead to individuals neglecting to take action as they may consider the problem to be overwhelming. Another image that was often used to depict the issue was politicians, emphasizing the political aspects to the fine dust issue. In addition, although most politicians were depicted with a neutral stance or expression, at times, positive elements were expressed with the politicians clapping their hands or shaking hands with other politicians, while negative elements were expressed with serious facial expressions or confrontational photo arrangements. Based on these findings, this research has two implications. First, visual frames of thumbnail images on YouTube were analysed. YouTubeโ€™s influence as a news media outlet is continuously expanding, and since media is a major aspect in forming public opinion, research regarding the platform is meaningful. In addition, research results identified visual frames used to communicate the fine dust issue. Images are intuitive, and can help viewers to remember news and related information. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the visual framing major social issue as fine dust is valuable.
