Interest in change is from a fundamental and inherent problem of sociology, and in sociology there has been an effort to capture the dynamics of human action beyond the scheme of structure and the individual. This study focuses on Bergsons philosophy of life, which has been identified as being in the movement of a flux of durΓ©e as an ideological source to reason the above sociological problems. In Bergsons philosophy, the concept of society is evolving with the development of the concept of durΓ©e, disclosing Bergsons own social theory. This study aims to figure out the problems of society and human action from the point of view of life philosophy by clarifying Bergsons social theory.
At the centre of Bergsons philosophy lies the concept of durΓ©e, and as it is noted, the concept of durΓ©e gradually developed as Bergsons thoughts developed. Chapter 2 examines Bergsons philosophy of life following the progress of the concept of durΓ©e. The earliest form of durΓ©e in Time and Free Will is time as a sheer movement which cannot be spatialised. Unveiling that the essence of all reality is a growing and flowing process of time, Bergson reveals that we are in a habit of confusing time with space, or quality with quantity. The concept of durΓ©e becomes the activity of spirit in Matter and Memory. The spirit represents the reality through the contraction of memory as static and also creates our own rhythm of durΓ©e. DurΓ©e is established as an ontological principle, as the power of the spirit is understood as the creative power of life in Creative Evolution. According to Bergsons theory of creative evolution, life evolves as a flux of becoming and a growing process towards the future. Located at the extreme of evolution, the human being is a privileged entity who preserves the power of life.
Chapter 3 derives Bergsons social theory by clarifying the evolving concept of society along with the development of durΓ©e. In Bergsons early work, society is understood as a static and an obstacle to freedom as a fixity. However, societys fixity stems from the contractions of intellect, which ensures a flexibility. The fact that human society is both fixed and flexible reaveals the speciality of human beings existence in contrast to animal instincts, which are automatistic. It is now confirmed through Creative Evolution that society is the way of life, intended by life to realize its desire for endless creation. The concepts of society considered so far are aggregated as trends of closedness and openness in Two Sources. Human society is alternating between the tendency of closedness to try to maintain society and the tendency of openness to move forward toward the future in line with the desire for life.
With the understanding of society as a movement between two tendencies, Chapter 4 examines the law of social development and the freedom of human action in accordance with the theory of creative evolution. Based on the concept of durΓ©e, the impossibility of freedom is a fallacy only occurring by observing actions posthumously. Structure and the individual are also representations obtained by abstracting action in the tendencies of closedness and openness. When attention is paid to the action itself, these external abstractions dissolve and disappear. Thus, society is developing in the process of creative evolution against any kind of determinism, which is the process of fundamentally free human actions as a qualitative leap forward to the future.μ 1 μ₯ μλ‘ 1
