These unique features have led to the charge over two millennia that its heterogeneity and eclecticism undermines the Odysseyโ€™s artistic unity. From the perspective that the Odyssey is a poetic response to the precedent monumental epic, the Iliad, however, the so-called โ€˜un-Homericโ€™ characteristics of Apologoi can be seen as the Odyssean reinterpretation of the Iliadโ€™s central themes and aesthetic principles. Through the wanderings of his own protagonist, the Odysseyโ€“poet seeks a way to establish a new kind of heroism differentiated from that of the Iliad. At the same time, the Odyssey tries to discover what to sing in an epic appropriate to the new era after the Trojan War. Odysseusโ€™ visit to Hades is pivotal in this respect: the Underworld journey provides the Odyssey-poet with an opportunity to confront his poetic heritage in its entirety. Encountering his comrades of the Trojan War and the legendary figures of the mythic past, Odysseus looks back on the cardinal themes of the Iliad: the immortal glory in return for the sacrifice of oneโ€™s own life and the heroic identity which constantly oscillates between divinity and bestiality. While having his protagonist meet various characters of the mythic past including the Trojan War, the Odyssey-poet redefines the Iliadโ€™s central themes as something bygone and irrevocable. In this light, it is noteworthy that the inhabitants of Apologoi revolve around one theme: transgression of the boundaries between gods, men and beasts. For the horror and disgust Odysseus experiences in facing them is equivalent to the Odysseyโ€™s criticism of the โ€˜poetics of precariousness,โ€™ the overarching thematic-aesthetic principle of the Iliad. As Odysseus rebuilds himself as a new hero which the transformed world after the Trojan War demands and then reconstructs his Ithaca anew, so the Odyssey, by praising its new hero, declares itself a These unique features have led to the charge over two millennia that its heterogeneity and eclecticism undermines the Odysseyโ€™s artistic unity. From the perspective that the Odyssey is a poetic response to the precedent monumental epic, the Iliad, however, the so-called โ€˜un-Homericโ€™ characteristics of Apologoi can be seen as the Odyssean reinterpretation of the Iliadโ€™s central themes and aesthetic principles. Through the wanderings of his own protagonist, the Odysseyโ€“poet seeks a way to establish a new kind of heroism differentiated from that of the Iliad. At the same time, the Odyssey tries to discover what to sing in an epic appropriate to the new era after the Trojan War. Odysseusโ€™ visit to Hades is pivotal in this respect: the Underworld journey provides the Odyssey-poet with an opportunity to confront his poetic heritage in its entirety. Encountering his comrades of the Trojan War and the legendary figures of the mythic past, Odysseus looks back on the cardinal themes of the Iliad: the immortal glory in return for the sacrifice of oneโ€™s own life and the heroic identity which constantly oscillates between divinity and bestiality. While having his protagonist meet various characters of the mythic past including the Trojan War, the Odyssey-poet redefines the Iliadโ€™s central themes as something bygone and irrevocable. In this light, it is noteworthy that the inhabitants of Apologoi revolve around one theme: transgression of the boundaries between gods, men and beasts.
