This paper investigate the coast defense system of Hwanghae Province during the late Joseon Period. To prevent the invasion from Yellow Sea, new coast bases and guard posts had been established, and battle ships and patrol men, cavalry had been arranged. But, in late 18th century, the possibility of war had decreased, on the other hand, smuggling between Korean and Chinese were increased. In 19th century, the Yellow Sea had become the place of private foreign trade

The defense system of Pyeongan Province(平安道) in late Joseon was made up with Yalu River line, Jeokyuryeong(狄踰嶺)mountains line and strategic points In case of Ching China's invasion, the officers of Yalu riverside fortresses had to renounce their own point and support the strategic point in early-17th century. But after 1678, officers could hold their fortresses, because the riverside fortresses were reinforced and the number of soldiers was increased in mid-17th century. In 18th century, after the treaty of 1712, the possibility of war decreased On the other hand, the individual or small group violation of the border became more important issue To protect violation, the riverside guard posts from Ganggye to Uiju county ware increased to 230, One officer and 2~10 soldiers were arranged per one pest In late 18th and early 19th centuries, the cultivation and residence in the area of Four Abolished Outposts was permitted and the guard posts became the base of local reclaim and developmen

There were 6 counties along the Duman river in Hamkyeong Province. The defence system of these counties was made up with guard posts, beacon fire and supporting system - crossing support between forts and support from southern Provinces. About 25 thousands farm soldiers, consisted with infantries and cavalry, were resided in these counties, they had trained in archery, gunshot and battle formation regularly. The bravery and fighting ability of them were well-known all over the country. 70 guard posts were arranged along the riverside and one officer and two soldiers were posted in each. They had to observe the opposite site, announce an alarm and prohibit the violation of the border. In the winter, northern army commander of Hamkyeong Province(Bukbyeongsa) had been stationed at temporary headquarter (Haengyoung) in Jongseong - the center of 6 counties - to provide against invasion. In late Joseon Dynasty, the possibility of conflict was decreased, but alert and military drills didn't become relaxed, because these counties were northern forefront bases of Joseon

Thermal Analysis Associated with the Application of Pipte Cooling System to a massive Concrete Structure

    No full text
Pipe cooling has been popularly used in the mass concreting work to reduce temperature of the structure since it is known to be the easiest way to apply and has been the customary usage. But wrong application of the system results in the harmful effect on the structure by crack formation due to thermal shocks and improper cooling schemes. Thus, this study aims at the suppling of effective cooling methods through parametric study. For this, circulating method, velocity of water supply and circulating duration were selected as critical factors affecting the effectiveness of cooling system. As a results of thermal analysis, it was found that too much thermal gradient in the vicinity of the pipe creates localized radial or circumferential cracks. The duration of circulating cooling may be recommended to be as short as several days which may safely reduce the concrete temperature to below a final stable value. It was also found that pipe cooling is more effective to decrease the degree external restraints than internal one
