After independence, the country was governed by a multiple-party democracy and was highly respected within the sub-region and the world for the respect of human and people’s rights and its democratic values until in July 1994 when the first republic came to an end by a military coup which stayed in power for two years. The birth of the second republic came two years later. Since then, the Gambia’s democratic reputation faced so many crises. This research is geared to find out the democratic crisis that the country is currently facing since it turned over to its second republic by looking into various institutions of the government and its behaviors and the other parameters or features that plays key important role to the democratization of any given country such as; the administrative neutrality, the civilian control of the military, freedom of expression, the competitive party system, the free and fair electoral system, and the checks and balances between the three branches of the government. However, the data were collected through a self-administered questionnaires survey and a total of 325 usable responses from the Gambians at home and in abroad.[[note]]碩
