Current status of male contraceptive operations--questionnaire at vasectomy

To investigate the current status of male contraceptive operations, the applicants for vasectomy were surveyed. The average age of the husbands was 37.3 years and that of the wives was 33.4 years. The number of children they had was 2.4 on the average. The duration of marriage ranged from 3 to 37 years and the average was 10.9 years. Fifty-eight percent of the patients visited our clinic of their own motive. Few of them had sought advice of a specialist before. Twenty-two percent of the wives had had an experience of natural abortion, whereas 58% of them had had artificial abortions. Methods of contraception which have been taken were condoms for 47 couples, Ogino's method (rhythm method) for 12, IUD for 11, pills for 6 and so on. Eight couples had not practiced contraception before. Forty-nine percent of the husbands were office workers, which was much higher than the rate for the whole working population in Japan

A CASE OF KALLMANN'S SYNDROME WITH SUCCESSFUL INDUCTION OF SPERMATOGENESIS

A 26-year-old single man visited our hospital with the chief complaint of having neither an ejaculation nor an orgasm. He was 180 cm tall and weighed 65 kg. He had very sparse pubic hair and no palpable prostate. Both testes were fairly small: The left testis was 28×19×17 mm. The basal levels of LH, FSH and testosterone in the blood were 4.5mIU/ml, 2.0mIU/ml and 68ng/dl, respectively, which showed hypo gonadotropic hypogonadism. He was found to have anosmia in the venous olfactory test with Alinamine(R) (Thiamin propyl disulfide). The diagnosis of Kallmann's syndrome was made by the above findings. To induce secondary sexual characteristics, hCG of 1000 I.U. was administered twice a week. After 30 weeks of hCG administration, he had pubic hair which was of female type, and he was bearded. Then he was able to have an ejaculation and the results of the semen analysis were: volume 1.5ml, sperm count 82×10/ml and motility 30%
