Cold fission as cluster decay with dissipation
For cold (neutronless) fission we consider an analytical model of quantum tunneling with dissipation through a barrier U(q) evaluated with a M3Y nucleon-nucleon force. We calculate the tunneling spectrum, i.e., the fission rate as a function of the total kinetic energy of the fragments. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data obtained for the fine structure of two cold fission modes of 252Cf: 148Ba+104Mo and 146Ba+106Mo. Taking into account the dissipative coupling of the potential function U(q) and of the momentum p with all the other neglected coordinates, we obtain a remarkable agreement with the experimental data. We conclude that the cold fission process is a spontaneous decay with a spectrum determined by the shape of the barrier and an amplitude depending on the strength of the dissipative coupling
Obesity and Nutritional Programs in Schools
AbstractPurposeTo establish whether nutritional programs in special schools for children with neuropsychomotor deficiencies in Romania influence the prevalence of obesity compared to similar programs for unaffected children attending normal schools.Materials and methodsThe survey included 3,103 pupils (age: 7-18 years): 663 from special schools serving breakfast, lunch and a snack and 2,440 from normal schools benefiting only from the EU fruit and milk in schools program.ResultsThe percentage of obese children in the normal schools was 8.97%, against 6.48% in the special schools. Although the presence of the deficiency implies the existence of several risk factors for obesity, contrary to expectations we find a smaller number of obese children among the children from the special schools. Under these circumstances, where there are multiple risk factors for obesity and food consumption is normal for the age group, with a higher ratio of hyper-caloric food the children with deficiencies have less prevalent obesity.ConclusionsThe low obesity prevalence in the special schools is due to the nutritional programs these children benefit from. Nutritional programs should be rethought in terms of introducing them in all school types, especially in relation to quantitative standards
Highly conductive coatings of carbon black/silica composites obtained by a sol-gel process
Conductive submicronic coatings of carbon black (CB)/silica composites have been prepared by a sol-gel process and deposited by spray-coating on glazed porcelain tiles. Stable CB dispersions with surfactant were rheologically characterized to determine the optimum CB-surfactant ratio. The composites were analyzed by Differential Thermal and Thermogravimetric Analysis and Hg-Porosimetry. Thin coatings were thermally treated in the temperature range of 300-500degC in air atmosphere. The microstructure of the coatings was determined by scanning electron microscopy and the structure evaluated by confocal Raman spectroscopy. The electrical characterization of the samples was carried out using dc intensity-voltage curves. The coatings exhibit good adhesion, high density and homogeneous distribution of the conductive filler (CB) in the insulate matrix (silica) that protects against the thermal degradation of the CB nanoparticles during the sintering process. As consequence, the composite coatings show the lowest resistivity values for CB-based films reported in the literature, with values of ~7times10 -5Omegam
Evaluation of prognostic significance of hematological profiles after the intensive phase treatment in pulmonary tuberculosis patients from Romania.
We evaluated in this cohort study the predictive ability of 23 peripheral blood parameters and ratios for treatment outcomes after the 2-month intensive phase in patients with PTB. In 63 patients out of 90 that turned culture negative, a significant decrease in white blood cell count, neutrophils, monocyte, hemoglobin, platelet, plateletcrit, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, MLR, NLR, PLR and SII values after anti-TB therapy compared to pretreatment was observed (p <0.001). Logistic regression analysis generated a model of predictors consisting of nine covariates. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between NLR with NEU (r = 0.79, p<0.01), SII with NEU (r = 0.846, p<0.01), PLT with SII (r = 0.831, p<0.01), PLT with PCT (r = 0.71, p<0.01) and MPV with P-LCR (r = 0,897, p<0.01) in 63 patients out of 90 that turned culture negative after 2 months of treatment. ROC curve analysis indicated that all areas under the curve (AUC) revealed no statistically significant results, except lymphocyte for culture conversion. In summary, here we observed a set of hematological parameters that declined significantly as the disease was treated in patients that turned culture negative. Despite some limitations, our findings are useful for further studies aiming to identify hematological profiles that could predict the treatment outcome
