Language Policies in Early Republican Era: Reflections of the Sun Language Theory on Turkish Press

Güneş Dil Teorisi, Türkçenin dünya dillerinin kaynağı olduğunu savunan 1930lu yılla- rın ikinci yarısında ortaya atılmış bir dilbilim teorisidir. Uluslaşma sürecinin önemli bir ayağı dil problemi idi. Güneş dil teorisi 1930lu yılların ilk yarısında dilde sadeleşme hareketinin yol açtığı sorunların önüne geçmekte işlevsel rol oynadı. Çalışma, III. Türk Dil Kurultayında sunulan Güneş Dil Teorisinin 1936-38 yıllarında gazetelere yansıması üzerinden, teorinin resmi ideoloji tarafından kullanımına odaklanmaktadır. Araştırma iki soru üzerinden temellenmektedir; Niçin bugünün araştırmacıları Güneş Dil teorisini kara mizah örneği olarak görmektedir?, 1936-38de farklı olan nedir? Bunun için, dönemin kitle iletişimini yönlendiren gazeteler merkez alınarak bir çözümleme yapılmış- tır. Ayrıca makalenin araştırdığı sorular arasında Ne yazılmıştı? Nasıl yazılmıştı? Kimler okumuştu? Erken Cumhuriyet dönemi açısından önemi neydi? bulunmaktadır.The Sun language theory that emerged in the second half of the 1930s, simply argues that all languages in the world derived from Turkish. Language appeared as an important pillar of the nation-building process. Sun language theory played a functional role in the prevention of problems emerged as the result of the simplification attempts in Turkish in the first half of the 1930s. This study focuses on the usage of the referred theory as the means of ideology by the government with respect to the reflections of the debates on the newspapers between 1936 and 1938. The study relies on why current researchers have been regarding the referred theory as an example of black humor while making an analysis on the circumstances in the second half of the 1930s that let the referred theory be asserted relying on the newspapers of the referred period that could have led the public opinion. Furthermore the study would shed light to some information on questions including the content of the concerning articles, the style, the readers as well as the significance of the theory for the early Republican period
