Calcium (Ca2+) content in the lower jaws of rats irradiated in the head region with X-rays
ct Irradiating the head region of 8-day-old rats with a dose of 8.64Gy of X-rays, at the age of 42 days, results in stunting of lower jaw growth as illustrated by measuring the length and height of the jaws. This irradiation dose also has as a consequence an increased content of Ca 2+ in the bone tissue of the lower jaw (270.36Ā±27.97 mmol/kg bone tissue) when compared to the corresponding non-irradiated controls (188.58Ā±19.26 mmol/kg bone tissue, p<0.05) and rats irradiated with a dose of 3.84Gy of X-rays (143.99Ā±15.29 mmol/kg bone tissue, p<0.01).Physical chemistry 2004 : 7th international conference on fundamental and applied aspects of physical chemistry; Belgrade (Serbia); 21-23 September 200
Levels of selenium in the rat pineal gland: the effects of selenium supplementation
Levels of selenium (Se) were measured in the pineal glands of rats aged 4,5,8 and 12 months and the following corresponding levels of Se were determined: 1.058 nmol/gland, 0.63 nmol/gland, 0.58 nmol/gland and 0.43 nmol/gland. In the rat pineal glands obtained from rats which drank water containing Se coupled to brewers yeast (average daily intake of Se per animal was 0.5Āµg ) the following increased levels of Se were determined: 0.87 nmol/gland, 0.72 nmol/gland and 0.59 nmol/gland at the ages of 5,8 and 12 monthsrespectively. Since Se participates in the antioxidative defense of the mammalian organism, the increased levels of Se in the pineal glands of rats supplemented with Se in drinking water, may be of physiological benefit during ageing.Physical chemistry 2004 : 7th international conference on fundamental and applied aspects of physical chemistry; Belgrade (Serbia); 21-23 September 200
Lipidna peroksidacija i aktivnost antioksidativnih enzima u eritrocitima radnika profesionalno izloženih aluminiju
Current research indicates that lipid peroxidation could have a role in aluminium toxicity. The aim of this study was to asses lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity in erythrocytes of workers occupationally exposed to aluminium. We investigated a group of 59 workers (Al group) exposed to aluminium fumes (contamination factor F=8.07 to 13.47, national maximal allowed concentration value is 2 mg m-3). The control group (C group) consisted of 75 subjects employed in lime production who had not been occupationally exposed to aluminium or any known toxic substance. Erythrocyte aluminium concentrations were significantly higher in the exposed group than controls [Al group (8.41Ā±3.66) Āµg L-1, C group (5.60Ā±0.86) Āµg L-1, p<0.001]. In the Al group, erythrocyte malondialdehyde concentration was also significantly higher [Al group (189.59Ā±81.27) Āµmol L-1, C group (105.21Ā±49.62) Āµmol L-1, p<0.001] and antioxidative enzyme activity reduced for glucoso-6-phosphatedehydrogenase [Al group (5.05Ā±1.70) IU g-1 Hb, C group (12.53Ā±4.12) IU g-1 Hb, p<0.001], glutathione reductase [Al group (1.41Ā±0.56) IU g-1 Hb, C group (1.89Ā±0.57) IU g-1 Hb, p<0.001], glutathione peroxidase [Al group (12.37Ā±5.76) IU g-1 Hb, C group (15.54Ā±4.85) IU g-1 Hb, p<0.001], catalase [Al group (116.76Ā±26.60) IU g-1 Hb, C group (158.81Ā±71.85) IU g-1 Hb, p<0.001] and superoxide dismutase [Al group (1175.8Ā±149.9) IU mg-1 Hb, C group (1377.9Ā±207.5) IU mg-1 Hb, p<0.001].Rezultati suvremenih istraživanja pokazuju da lipidna peroksidacija može imati važnu ulogu u toksiÄnosti aluminija. TakoÄer, u Al skupini utvrÄene su i statistiÄki znaÄajno niže aktivnosti antioksidativnih enzima u eritrocitima: glukozo- 6-fosfatdehidrogenaza [Al skupina (5,05Ā±1,70) IU g-1 Hb, kontrolna skupina (12,53Ā±4,12) IU g-1 Hb, p<0,001], glutationreduktaza [Al skupina (1,41Ā±0,56) IU g-1 Hb, kontrolna skupina (1,89Ā±0,57) IU g-1 Hb, p<0,001], glutationperoksidaza [Al skupina (12,37Ā±5,76) IU g-1 Hb, kontrolna skupina (15,54Ā±4,85) IU g-1 Hb, p<0,001], katalaza [Al skupina (116,76Ā±26,60) IU g-1 Hb, kontrolna skupina (158,81Ā±71,85) IU g-1 Hb, p<0,001] i superoksiddizmutaza [Al skupina (1175,8Ā±149,9) IU mg-1 Hb, kontrolna skupina (1377,9Ā±207,5) IU mg-1 Hb, p<0,001]
Selenium in food and population of Serbia
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace elements for animals and humans, but not for
plants. The quantity of Se in food and feed is strongly dependent on the concentration in
plants, that is the main source of selenium, for humans and animals. The uneven
distribution and availability of soils Se imply that different areas of the world are
characterized, from the point of human and animal nutrition, as Se-deficient, Se-adequate
or Se-toxic areas
Content of microelements in the rat pineal gland at different ages and the effects of selenium supplementation
The mammalian pineal gland regulates a number of important physiological processes. In this paper we report changes in the content of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) in the male rat pineal glands at 4, 5, 8, and 12 months of age. The effect of Se supplementation in drinking water on the content of pineal gland microelements was also studied. Selenium (Se)-dependent changes in pineal gland reported in this study suggest novel physicochemical and biochemical properties of Se, an important element essential in the antioxidative processes, yet known to influence a number of endocrine processes
Oxidative stress parameters changes in blood of rats treated with adriamycin and selenium
Most of cytostatics used in the therapy of malignant diseases express their effects either through inducing or by the direct production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), being non-specific, also affect a healthy tissue and enhance the oxidative stress. Adriamycin (ADR) injected into healthy experimental rats and examined the influence on antioxidative defense system in blood in the conditions of moderate trace element Selenium (Se) deficiency and in the optimal intake, receiving organically bound Se (dose corresponds to similar to100mug/day) for a month before treatment with ADR. In general, the diet richer in selenomethionine reduced oxidative changes caused by ADR application, analyzing 8 days after: the activities of glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase, glutathione and lipid peroxidation levels in the blood.Meeting of the Society-for-Free-Radical-Research - Europe, Proceedings, Jun 26-29, 2003, Ioannina, Greec

Effects of long-term selenium intake on oxidative changes in brain after ionizing radiation stress
Antioxidant system in human erythrocytes involved in radioprotection
The aim of this work was the investigation of the influence of ionizing radiation on the erythrocyte antioxidant system and metabolism. The erythrocyte antioxidative enzymes, GSH/GSSG ratio, as well as selenium concentrations were analysed in the same time with the main enzyme involved in carbohydrate and hemoglobin metabolism. The amounts of hemoglobin derivatives and modifications were investigated, too. The analysis was performed using erythrocytes of a group of patients with cancer bring exposed to ionizing radiation or not as well as healthy control in same conditions.
On the basis of results the inhibitory effects of ionizing radiation upon near all enzyme activities were detected as well as the corresponding alterations in efficiency of antioxidant system, carbohydrate and hemoglobin metabolism
