Fusion systems and constructing free actions on products of spheres
We show that every rank two p-group acts freely and smoothly on a product of two spheres. This follows from a more general construction: given a smooth action of a finite group G on a manifold M, we construct a smooth free action on M × S n1× ... × S nk when the set of isotropy subgroups of the G-action on M can be associated to a fusion system satisfying certain properties. Another consequence of this construction is that if G is an (almost) extra-special p-group of rank r, then it acts freely and smoothly on a product of r spheres. © 2011 Springer-Verlag
Quasilinear actions on products of spheres
For some small values of f, we prove that if G is a group having a complex (real) representation with fixity f, then it acts freely and smoothly on a product of f+1 spheres with trivial action on homology. © 2010 London Mathematical Society
45-GHz bandwidth-efficiency resonant-cavity-enhanced ITO-Schottky photodiodes
High-speed Schottky photodiodes suffer from low efficiency mainly due to the thin absorption layers and the semitransparent Schottky-contact metals. We have designed, fabricated and characterized high-speed and high-efficiency AlGaAs-GaAs-based Schottky photodiodes using transparent indium-tin-oxide Schottky contact material and resonant cavity enhanced detector structure. The measured devices displayed resonance peaks around 820 nm with 75% maximum peak efficiency and an experimental setup limited temporal response of 11 ps pulsewidth. The resulting 45-GHz bandwidth-efficiency product obtained from these devices corresponds to the best performance reported to date for vertically illuminated Schottky photodiodes
Fabrication of high-speed resonant cavity enhanced schottky photodiodes
We report the fabrication and testing of a GaAs-based high-speed resonant cavity enhanced (RCE) Schottky photodiode. The top-illuminated RCE detector is constructed by integrating a Schottky contact, a thin absorption region (In0.8Ga0.92As) and a distributed AlAs-GaAs Bragg mirror. The Schottky contact metal serves as a high-reflectivity top mirror in the RCE detector structure. The devices were fabricated by using a microwave-compatible fabrication process. The resulting spectral photo response had a resonance around 895 nm, in good agreement with our simulations. The full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) was 15 nm, and the enhancement factor was in excess of 6. The photodiode had an experimental setup limited temporal response of 18 ps FWHM, corresponding to a 3-dB bandwidth of 20 GHz
High-speed >90% quantum-efficiency p-i-n photodiodes with a resonance wavelength adjustable in the 795-835 nm range
We report GaAs/AlGaAs-based high-speed, high-efficiency, resonant cavity enhanced p-i-n photodiodes. The devices were fabricated by using a microwave-compatible fabrication process. By using a postprocess recess etch, we tuned the resonance wavelength from 835 to 795 nm while keeping the peak efficiencies above 90%. The maximum quantum efficiency was 92% at a resonance wavelength of 823 nm. The photodiode had an experimental setup-limited temporal response of 12 ps. When the system response is deconvolved, the 3 dB bandwidth corresponds to 50 GHz, which is in good agreement with our theoretical calculations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics
A systematic review of high-fibre dietary therapy in diverticular disease
The exact pathogenesis of diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon is not well established. However, the hypothesis that a low-fibre diet may result in diverticulosis and a high-fibre diet will prevent symptoms or complications of diverticular disease is widely accepted. The aim of this review is to assess whether a high-fibre diet can improve symptoms and/or prevent complications of diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon and/or prevent recurrent diverticulitis after a primary episode. Clinical studies were eligible for inclusion if they assessed the treatment of diverticular disease or the prevention of recurrent diverticulitis with a high-fibre diet. The following exclusion criteria were used for study selection: studies without comparison of the patient group with a control group. No studies concerning prevention of recurrent diverticulitis with a high-fibre diet met our inclusion criteria. Three randomised controlled trials (RCT) and one case-control study were included in this systematic review. One RCT of moderate quality showed no difference in the primary endpoints. A second RCT of moderate quality and the case-control study found a significant difference in favour of a high-fibre diet in the treatment of symptomatic diverticular disease. The third RCT of moderate quality found a significant difference in favour of methylcellulose (fibre supplement). This study also showed a placebo effect. High-quality evidence for a high-fibre diet in the treatment of diverticular disease is lacking, and most recommendations are based on inconsistent level 2 and mostly level 3 evidence. Guided self-help on the internet for turkish migrants with depression: the design of a randomized controlled trial
Background The Turkish population living in the Netherlands has a high prevalence of psychological complaints and has a high threshold for seeking professional help for these problems. Seeking help through the Internet can overcome these barriers. This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a guided self-help problem-solving intervention for depressed Turkish migrants that is culturally adapted and web-based. Methods This study is a randomized controlled trial with two arms: an experimental condition group and a wait list control group. The experimental condition obtains direct access to the guided web-based self-help intervention, which is based on Problem Solving Treatment (PST) and takes 6 weeks to complete. Turkish adults with mild to moderate depressive symptoms will be recruited from the general population and the participants can choose between a Turkish and a Dutch version. The primary outcome measure is the reduction of depressive symptoms, the secondary outcome measures are somatic symptoms, anxiety, acculturation, quality of life and satisfaction. Participants are assessed at baseline, post-test (6 weeks), and 4 months after baseline. Analysis will be conducted on the intention-to-treat sample.
