In this paper, the thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetric characteristics under beta-ray, x-ray and gamma-ray excitations of powder and pellet Mn-doped lithium tetraborates (LTB) which were produced by solution combustion synthesis technique were investigated, and the results were compared with that of TLD-100 chips. The chemical composition and morphologies of the obtained LTB and Mn-doped LTB (LTB:Mn) were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDX. LTB:Mn was studied using luminescence spectroscopy. In addition, the effects of sintering and annealing temperatures and times on the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of LTB:Mn were investigated. The glow curves of powder samples as well as pellet samples exposed to different beta doses exhibited a low temperature peak at about 100 °C followed by an intense principal high temperature peak at about 260 °C. The kinetic parameters (E, b, s) associated with the prominent glow peaks were estimated using Tm-Tstop, initial rise (IR) and computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) methods. The TL response of integral TL output increased linearly with increasing the dose in the range of 0.1-10 Gy and was followed by a superlinearity up to 100 Gy both for powder and pellet samples using beta-rays. Powder and pellet LTB:Mn were irradiated to a known dose by a linear accelerator with 6 and 18 MV photon beams, 6-15 MeV electron beams and a traceable 137Cs beam to investigate energy response. Further, TL sensitivity, fading properties and recycling effects related with beta exposure of LTB:Mn phosphor were evaluated and its relative energy response was also compared with that of TLD-100 chips. The comparison of the results showed that the obtained phosphors have good TL dose response with adequate sensitivity and linearity for the measurement of medical doses

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a developmental defect of the diaphragm. It becomes evident as a result of the entrance of the abdominal organs into the chest cavity. Generally, respiratory symptoms appear in the first few hours or days of life in affected newborns. Events diagnosed after one month are considered as late-onset CDH and these constitute 5-25% of all diaphragmatic hernia cases. In late diagnosed cases, left posterolateral CDH is seen most commonly (79.4%), and 65% of patients show symptoms within one year. The most common symptom and evidence are vomiting and dyspnea. During the infancy period, respiratory complaints are seen frequently while in the older ones gastrointestinal complaints are seen more often. In this article, we present a case of a 9-year-old patient who presented with the complaint of cough only and was diagnosed with diaphragmatic hernia. The patient was admitted to our emergency department with a preliminary diagnosis of pneumonia. In the physical examination of the patient, it became evident that breath sounds were decreased in the left hemithorax. Chest X-ray showed left hemithorax opacity and suspicious intestinal appearance. The patient was diagnosed with diaphragm hernia after ultrasonograhphy and thorax tomography. The patient was transferred to the pediatric surgery department and operated. Patients with CDH may not always be diagnosed at an early stage and may come up with different clinical symptoms at different ages. It is more difficult to diagnose in late-onset cases and it is important to make differential diagnosis. This case report was presented due to rarity of late onset CDH with only complaint of cough

Introduction:In recent years, Turkey has become a destination for many Syrian refugees due to the civil war. The objective of our study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of injuries among refugee children admitted to our tertiary clinic and compare them with Turkish children. Methods:This retrospective study was conducted between December 2013 and December 2017. Syrian refugees were compared with the local population according to the epidemiology of the trauma. Data on age, gender, trauma mechanism, trauma type, first referral center, transfer status, affected body region, affected organ, injury severity score, hospitalization in intensive care unit and pediatric surgery clinic, need for mechanical ventilation and operation, and clinical course were noted. Results:Four hundred fifteen Turkish citizens and 46 Syrian refugees were enrolled. The median age was similar (8 and 9; respectively) (p=0.815), but there were more boys among the refugees (65.3% and 80.4%; respectively) (p=0.025). The causes of trauma, type of trauma, transfer status, affected body region, need for mechanical ventilation, need for operation, and discharge status were similar between the groups. Lung trauma was more common in refugees than in Turkish patients (21.7% and 9.6%, respectively) (p=0.018). The rate of admission to intensive care unit was higher among Syrian children (p0.05).Conclusion:The findings suggest that the injury characteristics were similar between refugees and local children. We suppose that the higher incidence of intensive care unit admission among refugees was due to the fact that lung injury and high energy trauma mechanisms such as fall from heights or motor vehicle accident were more common in Syrian refugee children. We suggest that preventive measures and parenteral education would contribute to decrease the prevalence of traumatic injuries

Stratonikeia, one of the central cities of the Inner Caria Region in the ancient period, is located within the borders of the Eskihisar neighborhood of Yatagan District, Mugla Province. It is traced that the name of the region was Idrias at the beginning of the 5th century BC. The territory of Stratonikeia was ruled by the Seleucids in the final stages of Antiochus I's reign after 268 BC, and the region was renamed Stratonikeia in 260 BC. Our study was carried out in the theater, one of the most important edifices in the Hellenistic city. The cavea of the theater was placed on the natural slope facing north, as in Greek theaters. Originally constructed as a single storey during the Hellenistic Period (2nd century BC), the theater's stage construction was expanded by two storeys during the Augustus Period to become a three-story structure. The original plaster and mortar samples from three distinct sections of the theater construction in the Ancient City of Stratonikeia were subjected to spot tests, conductivity measurements, calcination (ignition loss), acid loss, and sieve analyses. Point loading strengths were also evaluated. The binder/aggregate mixture ratios of the mortars at Stratonikeia Theatre were roughly calculated to be 1/3 during the evaluation of the analysis data. It was observed that the mortar mixture ratios are consistent with the ancient mortar measurements suggested by Vitruvius. Moreover, uniaxial compressive strengths were ascertained by the point loading test, and the existence of water-soluble salts and their pozzolanic mortar instances were examined based on conductivity measurements and ignition loss results
