    Dynamics of ligand substitution in labile cobalt complexes resolved by ultrafast T-jump

    Ligand exchange of hydrated metal complexes is common in chemical and biological systems. Using the ultrafast T-jump, we examined this process, specifically the transformation of aqua cobalt (II) complexes to their fully halogenated species. The results reveal a stepwise mechanism with time scales varying from hundreds of picoseconds to nanoseconds. The dynamics are significantly faster when the structure is retained but becomes rate-limited when the octahedral-to-tetrahedral structural change bottlenecks the transformation. Evidence is presented, from bimolecular kinetics and energetics (enthalpic and entropic), for a reaction in which the ligand assists the displacement of water molecules, with the retention of the entering ligand in the activated state. The reaction time scale deviates by one to two orders of magnitude from that of ionic diffusion, suggesting the involvement of a collisional barrier between the ion and the much larger complex

    Column size effects of DER fluids

    The static yield stress of dielectric electrorheological(DER) fluids of infinite column state and chain state are calculated from the first principle method. The results indicate that the column surface contributions to ER effects is very small and both states will give correct results to the real DER fluids.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Density Functional Theory Studies of Magnetically Confined Fermi Gas

    A theory is developed for magnetically confined Fermi gas at low temperature based on the density functional theory. The theory is illustrated by numerical calculation of density distributions of Fermi atoms 40^{40}K with parameters according to DeMarco and Jin's experiment[Science, 285(1999)1703]. Our results are in good agreement with the experiment. To check the theory, we also performed calculations using our theory at high temperature and compared very well to the result of classical limit.Comment: 6 page

    Can small be beautiful? assessing image resolution requirements for mobile TV

    Mobile TV services are now being offered in several countries, but for cost reasons, most of these services offer material directly recoded for mobile consumption (i.e. without additional editing). The experiment reported in this paper, aims to assess the image resolution and bitrate requirements for displaying this type of material on mobile devices. The study, with 128 participants, examined responses to four different image resolutions, seven video encoding bitrates, two audio bitrates and four content types. The results show that acceptability is significantly lower for images smaller than 168×126, regardless of content type. The effect is more pronounced when bandwidth is abundant, and is due to important detail being lost in the smaller screens. In contrast to previous studies, participants are more likely to rate image quality as unacceptable when the audio quality is high
