Bolsa Família, its Design, its Impacts and Possibilities for the Future
Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programmes, including the Bolsa Família programme, have been extensively studied over recent years. The books, working papers and articles that have been written on the subject, if placed on top of each other, would pile up very high indeed. What excuse do I have for spending my time writing this one and asking you to spend yours reading it? My excuse is twofold. The first excuse is that, in spite of the aforementioned pile of studies, much about the programme is still not common knowledge. In the different forums in which I have been I have seen that many elementary facts about Bolsa Família are still relatively unknown to audiences beyond (some) Brazilian policymakers and government officials. How did the programme come about? What exactly was the Lula government?s role in its creation? What impact has it had on poverty, inequality, education, health and labour supply? Did it have any significant political effects? What are its contradictions and possibilities for the future? My objective is to give brief and, if possible, conclusive answers to all these questions in a single text. (?)Bolsa Família, its Design, its Impacts and Possibilities for the Future
Gene-Environment Interaction in the Onset of Eczema in Infancy: Filaggrin Loss-of-Function Mutations Enhanced by Neonatal Cat Exposure
Background
Loss-of-function variants in the gene encoding filaggrin (FLG) are major determinants of eczema. We hypothesized that weakening of the physical barrier in FLG-deficient individuals may potentiate the effect of environmental exposures. Therefore, we investigated whether there is an interaction between FLG loss-of-function mutations with environmental exposures (pets and dust mites) in relation to the development of eczema.
Methods and Findings
We used data obtained in early life in a high-risk birth cohort in Denmark and replicated the findings in an unselected birth cohort in the United Kingdom. Primary outcome was age of onset of eczema; environmental exposures included pet ownership and mite and pet allergen levels. In Copenhagen(n = 379), FLG mutation increased the risk of eczema during the first year of life (hazard ratio [HR] 2.26, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.27–4.00, p = 0.005), with a further increase in risk related to cat exposure at birth amongst children with FLG mutation (HR 11.11, 95% CI 3.79–32.60, p < 0.0001); dog exposure was moderately protective (HR 0.49, 95% CI 0.24–1.01, p = 0.05), but not related to FLG genotype. In Manchester (n = 503) an independent and significant association of the development of eczema by age 12 mo with FLG genotype was confirmed (HR 1.95, 95% CI 1.13–3.36, p = 0.02). In addition, the risk increased because of the interaction of cat ownership at birth and FLG genotype (HR 3.82, 95% CI 1.35–10.81, p = 0.01), with no significant effect of the interaction with dog ownership (HR 0.59, 95% CI 0.16–2.20, p = 0.43). Mite-allergen had no effects in either cohort. The observed effects were independent of sensitisation.
Conclusions
We have demonstrated a significant interaction between FLG loss-of-function main mutations (501x and 2282del4) and cat ownership at birth on the development of early-life eczema in two independent birth cohorts. Our data suggest that cat but not dog ownership substantially increases the risk of eczema within the first year of life in children with FLG loss-of-function variants, but not amongst those without. FLG-deficient individuals may need to avoid cats but not dogs in early life
Fermion Condensate Model of Electroweak Interactions
A new dynamical symmetry breaking model of electroweak interactions is
proposed based on interacting fermions. Two fermions of different SU_{L}(2)
representations form a symmetry breaking condensate and generate the lepton and
quark masses. The weak gauge bosons get their usual standard model masses from
a gauge invariant Lagrangian of a doublet scalar field composed of the new
fermion fields. The new fermion fields become massive by condensation. It is
shown that the new charged fermions are produced at the next linear colliders
in large number. The model is a low energy one which cannot be renormalized
perturbatively. For the parameters of the model unitarity constraints are
presented.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Collider phenomenology of vector resonances in WZ scattering processes
We study the production of vector resonances at the LHC via scattering
processes and explore the sensitivities to these resonances for the expected
future LHC luminosities. The electroweak chiral Lagrangian and the Inverse
Amplitude Method (IAM) are used for analyzing a dynamically generated vector
resonance, whose origin would be the (hypothetically strong) self interactions
of the longitudinal gauge bosons, and . We implement the unitarized
scattering amplitudes into a single model, the IAM-MC, that has been adapted to
MadGraph~5. It is written in terms of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and an
additional effective Proca Lagrangian for the vector resonances, so that it
reproduces the resonant behavior of the IAM and allows us to perform a
realistic study of signal versus background at the LHC. We focus on the channel, discussing first on the potential of the hadronic and
semileptonic channels of the final , and next exploring in more detail the
clearest signals. These are provided by the leptonic decays of the gauge
bosons, leading to a final state with , ,
having a very distinctive signature, and showing clearly the emergence of the
resonances with masses in the range of -, which we have
explored.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, contributed to the XIII Quark Confinement and the

An alternative model for the electroweak symmetry breaking sector and its signature in future e-gamma colliders
We perform a preliminary study of the deviations from the Standard Model
prediction for the cross section for the process . We work in the context of a higgsless chiral lagrangian model that
includes an extra vector resonance and an anomalous coupling.
We find that this cross section can provide interesting constraints on the free
parameters of the model once it is measured in future colliders.Comment: LaTex , 14 pages, 5 figures not included but available as postscript

Science and Subjectivity in Àngel Terron’s poetry
The relationships between science and poetry are usually examined from three perspectives: the lexicon (the use of scientific vocabulary in poems), the topical point of view (the presence of scientific motifs) and the subjective/authorial bias (the consideration that the fact of the author being a scientist confers scientificity to his literary texts). This article aims to deviate from the examination of the parallels between poetry and science to concentrate on the study of the intersections: in particular, the ways in which science and poetry deal with a) the process of symbolization, b) the development of procedures and c) the idea of creative disorder. The writing of the poet and chemist Angel Terron will be the testing ground for these investigations.
