Customer Attitudes towards Restaurant Reservations Policies
Reservations give restaurants the capability to select the most profitable mix of customers and help them better control their time. Reservations are not without problems because of the uncertainty associated with customers honoring their reservation and with the uncertainty associated with the length of time that customers will use the service. Many restaurants have developed policies to handle these uncertainties; the question is how customers react to such policies. An online survey on customer attitudes towards restaurant reservation policies was conducted in the United States. Respondents considered table-holding policies and credit card guarantees to be the most acceptable and fairest of the five policies considered. Entire party seating policies were viewed in a mostly neutral manner, while respondents had a mixed view of maximum duration policies. Short-show policies were considered to be the least understandable and acceptable. In all cases, customers who were more familiar with a policy were more likely to consider that policy to be acceptable and fair
Increased Brain Fatty Acid Uptake in Metabolic Syndrome
OBJECTIVE: To test whether brain fatty acid uptake is enhanced in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS) and whether weight reduction modifies it. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We measured brain fatty acid uptake in a group of 23 patients with MS and 7 age-matched healthy control subjects during fasting conditions using positron emission tomography (PET) with [(11)C]-palmitate and [(18)F]fluoro-6-thia-heptadecanoic acid ([(18)F]-FTHA). Sixteen MS subjects were restudied after 6 weeks of very low calorie diet intervention. RESULTS: At baseline, brain global fatty acid uptake derived from [(18)F]-FTHA was 50% higher in patients with MS compared with control subjects. The mean percentage increment was 130% in the white matter, 47% in the gray matter, and uniform across brain regions. In the MS group, the nonoxidized fraction measured using [(11)C]-palmitate was 86% higher. Brain fatty acid uptake measured with [(18)F]-FTHA-PET was associated with age, fasting serum insulin, and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index. Both total and nonoxidized fractions of fatty acid uptake were associated with BMI. Rapid weight reduction decreased brain fatty acid uptake by 17%. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study on humans to observe enhanced brain fatty acid uptake in patients with MS. Both fatty acid uptake and accumulation appear to be increased in MS patients and reversed by weight reduction
Risk factors for breast cancer development by tumor characteristics among women with benign breast disease
Abstract
Background
Among women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, 30% have a prior diagnosis of benign breast disease (BBD). Thus, it is important to identify factors among BBD patients that elevate invasive cancer risk. In the general population, risk factors differ in their associations by clinical pathologic features; however, whether women with BBD show etiologic heterogeneity in the types of breast cancers they develop remains unknown.
Methods
Using a nested case-control study of BBD and breast cancer risk conducted in a community healthcare plan (Kaiser Permanente Northwest), we assessed relationships of histologic features in BBD biopsies and patient characteristics with subsequent breast cancer risk and tested for heterogeneity of associations by estrogen receptor (ER) status, tumor grade, and size. The study included 514 invasive breast cancer cases (median follow-up of 9 years post-BBD diagnosis) and 514 matched controls, diagnosed with proliferative or non-proliferative BBD between 1971 and 2006, with follow-up through mid-2015. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained using multivariable polytomous logistic regression models.
Results
Breast cancers were predominantly ER-positive (86%), well or moderately differentiated (73%), small (74% < 20 mm), and stage I/II (91%). Compared to patients with non-proliferative BBD, proliferative BBD with atypia conferred increased risk for ER-positive cancer (OR = 5.48, 95% CI = 2.14–14.01) with only one ER-negative case, P-heterogeneity = 0.45. The presence of columnar cell lesions (CCLs) at BBD diagnosis was associated with a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of both ER-positive and ER-negative tumors, with a 2-fold increase (95% CI = 1.21–3.58) observed among postmenopausal women (56%), independent of proliferative BBD status with and without atypia. We did not identify statistically significant differences in risk factor associations by tumor grade or size.
Conclusion
Most tumors that developed after a BBD diagnosis in this cohort were highly treatable low-stage ER-positive tumors. CCL in BBD biopsies may be associated with moderately increased risk, independent of BBD histology, and irrespective of ER status
Advanced demand and a critical analysis of revenue management
Pre-print; author's draftThis paper presents a theoretical framework of advanced demand through six propositions. The framework introduces the concept of acquisition and valuation risks and suggests that advanced demand distribution is rooted in the trade off between them. Furthermore, since advanced buyers may not consume, firms may be able to re-sell capacity relinquished. The study then proposes how refunds could provide additional revenue to firms.
The study further suggests theoretical reasons why and when service firms are able to practice revenue management, suggesting that RM tools such as overbooking and demand forecasting may not be the only tools for higher revenue

Axion Dark Matter eXperiment: Run 1A analysis details
The ADMX Collaboration gathered data for its Run 1A axion dark matter search from January 2017 to June 2017, scanning with an axion haloscope over the frequency range 645–680 MHz ( in axion mass) at Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitskii (DFSZ) sensitivity. The resulting axion search found no axionlike signals comprising all the dark matter in the form of a virialized galactic halo over the entire frequency range, implying lower bound exclusion limits at or below DFSZ coupling at the 90% confidence level. This paper presents expanded details of the axion search analysis of Run 1A, including review of relevant experimental systems, data-taking operations, preparation and interpretation of raw data, axion search methodology, candidate handling, and final axion limits
A gap between rational annuitization price for producer and price for customer
The paper studies pricing of insurance products focusing on the pricing of annuities under uncertainty. This pricing problem is crucial for financial decision making and was studied intensively; however, many open questions still remain. In particular, there is a so-called ``annuity puzzle" related to certain inconsistency of existing financial theory with the empirical observations for the annuities market. The paper suggests a pricing method based on the risk minimization such that both producer and customer seek to minimize the mean square hedging error accepted as a measure of risk. This leads to two different versions of the pricing problem: the selection of the annuity price given the rate of regular payments, and the selection of the rate of payments given the annuity price. It appears that solutions of these two problems are different. This can contribute to explanation for the "annuity puzzle"
Variability of Disk Emission in Pre-Main Sequence and Related Stars. I. HD 31648 and HD 163296 - Isolated Herbig Ae Stars Driving Herbig-Haro Flows
Infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering a time span of a quarter
century are presented for HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 (MWC 275). Both are
isolated Herbig Ae stars that exhibit signs of active accretion, including
driving bipolar flows with embedded Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. HD 163296 was
found to be relatively quiescent photometrically in its inner disk region, with
the exception of a major increase in emitted flux in a broad wavelength region
centered near 3 microns in 2002. In contrast, HD 31648 has exhibited sporadic
changes in the entire 3-13 micron region throughout this span of time. In both
stars the changes in the 1-5 micron flux indicate structural changes in the
region of the disk near the dust sublimation zone, possibly causing its
distance from the star to vary with time. Repeated thermal cycling through this
region will result in the preferential survival of large grains, and an
increase in the degree of crystallinity. The variability observed in these
objects has important consequences for the interpretation of other types of
observations. For example, source variability will compromise models based on
interferometry measurements unless the interferometry observations are

Revisiting the relevance of economic theory to hotel revenue management education and practice in the era of Big Data
Abstract
This paper explores the role of economics in hospitality education and industry practice, with a particular focus on revenue management, and puts forward an argument for a return to the inclusion of economic theory in UK hospitality education, not seen since the 1990s. Given the increasing amounts of pricing data available to both managers and customers and the consequent market complexities now seen, developing economic literacy is demonstrated to be a crucial skill required for future hospitality graduates, allowing them to make successful revenue decisions and sense-check with confidence the decisions made by automated revenue systems. Economic literacy is defined as a balanced understanding of economic theory that can be applied in real-life business scenarios, extending beyond simple consideration of supply and demand to a mixture of neoclassical and behavioural approaches to economics
