Hierarchical Design Based Intrusion Detection System For Wireless Ad hoc Network
In recent years, wireless ad hoc sensor network becomes popular both in civil
and military jobs. However, security is one of the significant challenges for
sensor network because of their deployment in open and unprotected environment.
As cryptographic mechanism is not enough to protect sensor network from
external attacks, intrusion detection system needs to be introduced. Though
intrusion prevention mechanism is one of the major and efficient methods
against attacks, but there might be some attacks for which prevention method is
not known. Besides preventing the system from some known attacks, intrusion
detection system gather necessary information related to attack technique and
help in the development of intrusion prevention system. In addition to
reviewing the present attacks available in wireless sensor network this paper
examines the current efforts to intrusion detection system against wireless
sensor network. In this paper we propose a hierarchical architectural design
based intrusion detection system that fits the current demands and restrictions
of wireless ad hoc sensor network. In this proposed intrusion detection system
architecture we followed clustering mechanism to build a four level
hierarchical network which enhances network scalability to large geographical
area and use both anomaly and misuse detection techniques for intrusion
detection. We introduce policy based detection mechanism as well as intrusion
response together with GSM cell concept for intrusion detection architecture.Comment: 16 pages, International Journal of Network Security & Its

Detection techniques of selective forwarding attacks in wireless sensor networks: a survey
The wireless sensor network has become a hot research area due its wide range
of application in military and civilian domain, but as it uses wireless media
for communication these are easily prone to security attacks. There are number
of attacks on wireless sensor networks like black hole attack, sink hole
attack, Sybil attack, selective forwarding attacks etc. in this paper we will
concentrate on selective forwarding attacks In selective forwarding attacks,
malicious nodes behave like normal nodes and selectively drop packets. The
selection of dropping nodes may be random. Identifying such attacks is very
difficult and sometimes impossible. In this paper we have listed up some
detection techniques, which have been proposed by different researcher in
recent years, there we also have tabular representation of qualitative analysis
of detection techniquesComment: 6 Page
Practical security scheme design for resource-constrained wireless networks
The implementation of ubiquitous computing (or pervasive computing) can leverage various types of resource-constrained wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks and wireless personal area networks. These resource-constrained wireless networks are vulnerable to many malicious attacks that often cause leakage, alteration and destruction of critical information due to the insecurity of wireless communication and the tampers of devices. Meanwhile, the constraints of resources, the lack of centralized management, and the demands of mobility of these networks often make traditional security mechanisms inefficient or infeasible. So, the resource-constrained wireless networks pose new challenges for information assurance and call for practical, efficient and effective solutions.
In this research, we focus on wireless sensor networks and aim at enhancing confidentiality, authenticity, availability and integrity, for wireless sensor networks. Particularly, we identify three important problems as our research targets: (1) key management for wireless sensor networks (for confidentiality), (2) filtering false data injection and DoS attacks in wireless sensor networks (for authenticity and availability), and (3) secure network coding (for integrity).
We investigate a diversity of malicious attacks against wireless sensor networks and design a number of practical schemes for establishing pairwise keys between sensor nodes, filtering false data injection and DoS attacks, and securing network coding against pollution attacks for wireless sensor networks. Our contributions from this research are fourfold: (1) We give a taxonomy of malicious attacks for wireless sensor networks. (2) We design a group-based key management scheme using deployment knowledge for wireless sensor networks to establish pair-wise keys between sensor nodes. (3) We propose an en-route scheme for filtering false data injection and DoS attacks in wireless sensor networks. (4) We present two efficient schemes for securing normal and XOR network coding against pollution attacks. Simulation and experimental results show that our solutions outperform existing ones and are suitable for resource-constrained wireless sensor networks in terms of computation overhead, communication cost, memory requirement, and so on
Wireless sensor network performance analysis and effect of blackhole and sinkhole attacks
The widespread usage of Wireless sensor networks in various fields and application make it vulnerable to variety of security threats and attacks. These security attacks occur when an adversary compromised a sensor node by inject false measurements and divert real time network traffic. Sinkhole and Blackhole attacks are very common attacks in network, where an attacker advertises un-authorized routing update in network. To deal with these types of attacks, there is a need to tighten the network security and prevent from attackers. In this study, we discuss security threats and presents the effects of Black and Sink hole attacks. Further, the study presents related work and current issues in wireless sensor network. The simulation results illustrated that, how these attacks affect the network performance
Exploring Impacts of Random Proactive Jamming Attack in Wireless Sensor Network
Wireless Sensor networks are one of the most extensively used technologies in our day to day lives; they can provide communication without needing a fixed infrastructure, which makes them suitable for communication in disaster areas or when quick deployment is needed. However, this kinds of network technology uses the wireless medium for communication. It is vulnerable to malicious attacks. One of the most frequently used attacks is a random jamming attacks which is Denial of Service attack. Random Jamming attacks disturb the communication between Sink and legitimate nodes. In rough environments where there is constant traffic, Random jamming attack can cause serious problems. Because of this, a study of random jamming attacks and how to prevent them is necessary. In this research the random jamming attacks were simulated using Riverbed Modeler software, in order to provide a better understanding of effects of random jamming attacks. This study will be helpful for future research and development of a practical, effective way to avoid random jamming attacks. The objectives of this thesis were to simulate and analysis wireless sensor network (ZigBee) under random jamming attacks; launch different kinds of (fixed, mobile) random jamming attacks in order to test how much influence on performance of wireless sensor network. Riverbed Modeler Based simulation which have five scenarios were created and the simulation was run and the results were collected, which shows that the throughput of the wireless sensor network decrease and increase the delay ,data drop when the network is affected by the random Jammers. Finally, thesis describe the open issues in this field, such as adding more than one random jammer and sink in wireless sensor network
Routing Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is an emerging technology now-a-days and has a
wide range of applications such as battlefield surveillance, traffic
surveillance, forest fire detection, flood detection etc. But wireless sensor
networks are susceptible to a variety of potential attacks which obstructs the
normal operation of the network. The security of a wireless sensor network is
compromised because of the random deployment of sensor nodes in open
environment, memory limitations, power limitations and unattended nature. This
paper focuses on various attacks that manifest in the network and provides a
tabular representation of the attacks, their effects and severity. The paper
depicts a comparison of attacks basis packet loss and packet corruption. Also,
the paper discusses the known defence mechanisms and countermeasures against
the attacks.Comment: IJCSIT April 201
A resilient key predistribution scheme for multiphase wireless sensor networks
In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes eventually die due to battery depletion. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in which new nodes are periodically redeployed with certain intervals, called generations, to replace the dead nodes are called multi-phase wireless sensor networks. In the literature, there are several key predistribution schemes proposed for secure operation of WSNs. However, these schemes are designed for single phase networks which are not resilient against continuous node capture attacks; even under temporary attacks on the network, the harm caused by the attacker does not heal in time. However, the periodic deployments in multi-phase sensor networks could be utilized to improve the resiliency of the WSNs by deploying nodes with fresh keys. In the literature, there is limited work done in this area. In this paper, we propose a key predistribution scheme for multi-phase wireless sensor networks which is highly resilient under node capture attacks. In our scheme, called RGM (random generation material) key predistribution scheme, each generation of deployment has its own random keying material and pairwise keys are established between node pairs of particular generations. These keys are specific to these generations. Therefore, a captured node cannot be abused to obtain keys of other generations. We compare the performance of our RGM scheme with a well-known multi-phase key predistribution scheme and showed that RGM achieves up to three-fold more resiliency. Even under heavy attacks, our scheme's resiliency performance is 50% better in steady state
