Figures of interpretation
This peer-reviewed article was intended to contribute to the general pedagogy of practice-led doctoral research through addressing the particular methodological issue of the relationship between written text and practice.
This methodological issue concerns the modes of interpretation that arise in the relationship between the written text and the art work in practice-led doctoral research. The initial version of this paper was a contribution to the 5th Research into Practice conference (Royal Society of Arts, London, October 2008), whose central theme was the question of whether art practice-led doctoral research should provide the means for a clear interpretation of its contribution to knowledge, or whether it is a defining characteristic of art work that it is open to different interpretations. In the article I subsequently developed, I consider the idea that the act of interpretation which takes place between written text and art work is one that involves two distinct interpretative attitudes, and explore the possibility, with reference to Hayden White's work on the relationship between rhetorical figures and discourse, that a particular kind of knowledge is produced through the workings of their internal relationship

This paper takes up Adorno’s aesthetics as a dialectic between philosophy and art. In doing so, I argue that art provides a unique way of mediating between theory and practice, between concepts and experience, and between subjectivity and objectivity, because in art these relations are flexible and left open to interpretation, which allows a form of thinking that can point beyond itself. A Survey of Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Network Models for Engineering Applications
This survey samples from the ever-growing family of adaptive resonance theory
(ART) neural network models used to perform the three primary machine learning
modalities, namely, unsupervised, supervised and reinforcement learning. It
comprises a representative list from classic to modern ART models, thereby
painting a general picture of the architectures developed by researchers over
the past 30 years. The learning dynamics of these ART models are briefly
described, and their distinctive characteristics such as code representation,
long-term memory and corresponding geometric interpretation are discussed.
Useful engineering properties of ART (speed, configurability, explainability,
parallelization and hardware implementation) are examined along with current
challenges. Finally, a compilation of online software libraries is provided. It
is expected that this overview will be helpful to new and seasoned ART
researchers

Fuzzy ART Choice Functions
Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) models are real-time neural networks for category learning, pattern recognition, and prediction. Unsupervised fuzzy ART and supervised fuzzy ARTMAP networks synthesize fuzzy logic and ART by exploiting the formal similarity between tile computations of fuzzy subsethood and the dynamics of ART category choice, search, and learning. Fuzzy ART self-organizes stable recognition categories in response to arbitrary sequences of analog or binary input patterns. It generalizes the binary ART 1 model, replacing the set-theoretic intersection (∩) with the fuzzy intersection(∧), or component-wise minimum. A normalization procedure called complement coding leads to a symmetric theory in which the fuzzy intersection and the fuzzy union (∨), or component-wise maximum, play complementary roles. A geometric interpretation of fuzzy ART represents each category as a box that increases in size as weights decrease. This paper analyzes fuzzy ART models that employ various choice functions for category selection. One such function minimizes total weight change during learning. Proposal for an experimental test of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics
The many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics predicts the formation of
distinct parallel worlds as a result of a quantum mechanical measurement.
Communication among these parallel worlds would experimentally rule out
alternatives to this interpretation. A procedure for ``interworld'' exchange of
information and energy, using only state of the art quantum optical equipment,
is described. A single ion is isolated from its environment in an ion trap.
Then a quantum mechanical measurement with two discrete outcomes is performed
on another system, resulting in the formation of two parallel worlds. Depending
on the outcome of this measurement the ion is excited from only one of the
parallel worlds before the ion decoheres through its interaction with the
environment. A detection of this excitation in the other parallel world is
direct evidence for the many-worlds interpretation. This method could have

Modern Narcissus: the lingering reflections of myth in modern art
Why has myth continued to fascinate modern artists, and why the myth of Narcissus, with its modern association with narcissism? This article considers the relationship between the Narcissus myth and the lineage of modern art that runs from Symbolism to surrealism through the polymorphous prism of the Greco-Roman Pantheon to which Narcissus belongs. The article offers an interpretation of the role of mythology in modern art that moves beyond psychoanalysis to incorporate the longer span of the art-historical tradition. Addressing issues of aesthetics, gender and sexuality, the following account highlights Narcissus‟s double nature as an erotic myth that comprises both identity formation and intersubjectivity, as enacted in the field of representation. The myths associated with Narcissus in the history of Western art will help us reconsider his role as a powerful figure capable to activate that slippage between word and image, identity and sociability, representation and reality which was celebrated by the Symbolists and formed the centre of the surrealists‟ social-aesthetic project
A generic framework for the analysis and specialization of logic programs
The relationship between abstract interpretation and partial
deduction has received considerable attention and (partial) integrations have been proposed starting from both the partial deduction and abstract interpretation perspectives. In this work we present what we argüe is the first fully described generic algorithm for efñcient and precise integration of abstract interpretation and partial deduction. Taking as starting point state-of-the-art algorithms for context-sensitive, polyvariant abstract interpretation and (abstract) partial deduction, we present
an algorithm which combines the best of both worlds. Key ingredients include the accurate success propagation inherent to abstract interpretation and the powerful program transformations achievable by partial deduction. In our algorithm, the calis which appear in the analysis graph
are not analyzed w.r.t. the original definition of the procedure but w.r.t. specialized definitions of these procedures. Such specialized definitions are obtained by applying both unfolding and abstract executability. Our framework is parametric w.r.t. different control strategies and abstract domains. Different combinations of such parameters correspond to existing algorithms for program analysis and specialization. Simultaneously, our approach opens the door to the efñcient computation of strictly more
precise results than those achievable by each of the individual techniques.

Digital image processing of the Ghent altarpiece : supporting the painting's study and conservation treatment
In this article, we show progress in certain image processing
techniques that can support the physical restoration of the painting, its art-historical analysis, or both. We show how analysis of the crack patterns could indicate possible areas of overpaint, which may be of great value for the physical restoration campaign, after further validation. Next, we explore how digital image inpainting can serve as a simulation for the restoration of paint losses. Finally, we explore how the statistical analysis of the relatively simple and frequently recurring objects (such as pearls in this masterpiece) may characterize the consistency of the painter’s style and thereby aid both art-historical interpretation and physical restoration campaign
