Shift Work: Gut Health and Metabolic Disease

    Get PDF
The number of people engaged in shift work continues to rise, and with it the research linking shift work to various diseases and conditions. Shift work changes the body’s sleeping patterns and circadian rhythms which has an effect on all parts of the body including the heart, immunity, cancer development, and inflammatory processes. Altered sleeping patterns and circadian rhythms change the composition and anatomy of the gut and microbiome, which in turn affects the development of metabolic diseases. Shift work also changes one’s eating patterns and habits. Altered eating habits similarly changes the composition and anatomy of the gut and microbiome. With the combined effects of sleep patterns and eating habits on the gut, it can be said shift work itself produces lasting and harmful effects in the gut and microbiome. These changes in the gut underlie many of the disease processes plaguing shift workers. With the gut having such widespread effects on the body, it should be the focus of research and treatment related to shift work associated disease processes

Shift work and Risks in Pregnant Women

Varying work schedules are suspected of increasing risks to pregnant women and to fetal well being. In particular, maternal hormonal disturbance arising from sleep deprivation, circadian rhythm disruption might impair fetal growth or lead to complications. This review was based on few high quality studies

Stick Shift: Autonomous Vehicles, Driving Jobs, and the Future of Work

More than 30 companies say they are just a few years away from introducing autonomous vehicles to the mass market. While it is unknown what the ultimate impact of autonomous vehicles will have on jobs, there is a possibility that there could be a relatively rapid transition. This is likely to cause significant pain in a number of communities, as well as exacerbate the losses of "good jobs," a category that includes some driving jobs. It would be prudent to strengthen our safety net and labor market to absorb a shock from autonomous-vehicle technology, as well as ensure that autonomous-vehicle technology is safe and reliable. This will be a challenge, given the recent change in the party controlling the executive branch, and its new secretary of transportation. Strengthening the unemployment insurance system, improving apprenticeship programs, making higher education more affordable, and committing to full employment can not only minimize the harm to displaced workers, but can provide them with opportunities that lead to fulfilling and economically sustaining jobs. This is good policy whether or not autonomous vehicles are around the corner

Shift & night work – the positive impact, challenges and action to deal with it

Shift work means work that takes place on a schedule of employee outside the normal hours eight at morning until at five at evening. Well, it involves day and night shifts, which is whether in an early morning shifts, and rotating shifts. In Malaysia, shift work happens usually to the health care workers, precision production and repair workers, machines operator, and aviation workers and so on. Especially in manufacturing, employees tend to make sure machines run twenty-four hours per day rather than buying more machines to operate on a day shift

Characterization for entropy of shifts of finite type on Cayley trees

The notion of tree-shifts constitutes an intermediate class in between one-sided shift spaces and multidimensional ones. This paper proposes an algorithm for computing of the entropy of a tree-shift of finite type. Meanwhile, the entropy of a tree-shift of finite type is 1plnλ\dfrac{1}{p} \ln \lambda for some pNp \in \mathbb{N}, where λ\lambda is a Perron number. This extends Lind's work on one-dimensional shifts of finite type. As an application, the entropy minimality problem is investigated, and we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for a tree-shift of finite type being entropy minimal with some additional conditions

Background Shift work can be propounded as a risk factor of psychological problems creation. This study has been executed to determine relation between shift work and psychological problems among hospital’s personnel of Ardabil University of Medical science. Materials and methods This study is a retrospective case-control one and has been executed on 388 person of personnel of hospitals of Ardabil University of Medical Science (223 as case group and 65 as control group), that has been selected randomly. Requisite information was collected with three questionnaires. Including General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), personal questionnaire and standardized sleep state evaluation questionnaire and were analyzed by SPSS statistical software. Chi-square and analysis of variance tests were used to test investigation’s hypothesis. Results Meaningful relation were found between these problems such as somatoform signs (p< 0.005) anxiety (p< 0.019) social action disorder (p< 0.001) and depression (p< 0.019) and shift work. Conclusions It is advised to reform irregular circulation of shift Work in hospitals and with due attention to work conditions of any hospital

Exhibition: Shift. This exhibition is one of two that comprise a collaborative project between Blue Roof Museum, Chengdu, China and Wintec researchers, Hamilton, NZ. Wintec artists and Chengdu artists made up this exhibition and was curated by Ding Fenqi, Blue Roof Museum and Eliza Webster, Wallace Gallery , Morrinsville, NZ. Notions of community, technology and exchange were explored in the exhibition This sculptural work explores ideas of work, location/relocation and transferable skills
