    Continuous authentication based on data from smart devices

    As technology moves forward to offer the user custom information, based on their activity, their habits, their hobbies… User authentication advances and provides them with ways to verify their identity with data that no one else possess, such as fingerprints, and it is becoming more popular. More devices are entering in the market, wearables, which provide an enhanced user experience by expanding the functionalities offered by a computer or a smartphone, and they are being incorporated to the user identification process. This thesis presents an approach to user authentication based on their movement, collecting data from an accelerometer placed on a smartwatch, to find out if it is a valid metric to distinguish among users when they are performing day to day activities. The recognition task is relied on artificial intelligence techniques, employing machine learning algorithms to generate a model that recognises a user and the activity that is being carried out, and a graphical user interface is provided so that users can try the system and incorporate new information. Using Waikato University developed software for machine learning algorithms, the system is developed using Python and Texas Instruments eZ430-Chronos smartwatch, and has been tested on a real environment, where several users were asked to perform different activities while wearing the watch.Según se mueve la tecnología hacia la personalización de la información basada en la actividad de los usuarios, sus hábitos y hobbies… La identificación de los usuarios avanza para proporcionar formas de verificación particulares para cada uno y que no posee nadie más, como es el caso del reconocimiento mediante la huella dactilar, y cada día gana más aceptación entre los usuarios. Los constantes lanzamientos de nuevos dispositivos weareables, que proporcionan una experiencia de usuario mejorada, ofrecen nuevas funcionalidades que extienden las que ya proporcionan los ordenadores o dispositivos móviles, y su uso se está incorporando a la verificación de usuarios. A lo largo de este trabajo se presenta un nuevo enfoque a la identificación de usuario basado en su movimiento, recolectando datos de un acelerómetro situado en un smartwatch, para averiguar si es una forma válida de diferenciar entre usuarios cuando están realizando actividades comunes del día a día. La tarea de identificación se confía a la inteligencia artificial, utilizando algoritmos de aprendizaje automático para generar modelos que sean capaces de reconocer a un usuario y la actividad que están realizando. Además, se proporciona una interfaz de usuario para que los usuarios puedan probar el sistema y ampliarlo con nuevos datos.     Model-based 3d gait biometric using quadruple fusion classifier

    The area of gait biometrics has received significant interest in the last few years, largely due to the unique suitability and reliability of gait pattern as a human recognition technique. The advantage of gait over other biometrics is that it can perform non-intrusive data acquisition and can be captured from a distance. Current gait analysis approach can be divided into model-free and model-based approach. The gait data extracted for identification process may be influenced by ambient noise conditions, occlusion, changes in backgrounds and illumination when model-free 2D silhouette data is considered. In addition, the performance in gait biometric recognition is often affected by covariate factors such as walking condition and footwear. These are often related to low performance of personal verification and identification. While body biometrics constituted of both static and dynamics features of gait motion, they can complement one another when used jointly to maximise recognition performance. Therefore, this research proposes a model-based technique that can overcome the above limitations. The proposed technique covers the process of extracting a set of 3D static and dynamic gait features from the 3D skeleton data in different covariate factors such as different footwear and walking condition. A skeleton model from forty subjects was acquired using Kinect which was able to provide human skeleton and 3D joints and the features were extracted and categorized into static and dynamic data. Normalization process was performed to scale down the features into a specific range of structure, followed by feature selection process to select the most significant features to be used in classification. The features were classified separately using five classification algorithms for static and dynamic features. A new fusion framework is proposed based on score level fusion called Quadruple Fusion Framework (QFF) in order to combine the static and dynamic features obtained from the classification model. The experimental result of static and dynamic fusion achieved the accuracy of 99.5% for footwear covariates and 97% for walking condition covariates.     Transparent Authentication Utilising Gait Recognition

    Securing smartphones has increasingly become inevitable due to their massive popularity and significant storage and access to sensitive information. The gatekeeper of securing the device is authenticating the user. Amongst the many solutions proposed, gait recognition has been suggested to provide a reliable yet non-intrusive authentication approach – enabling both security and usability. While several studies exploring mobile-based gait recognition have taken place, studies have been mainly preliminary, with various methodological restrictions that have limited the number of participants, samples, and type of features; in addition, prior studies have depended on limited datasets, actual controlled experimental environments, and many activities. They suffered from the absence of real-world datasets, which lead to verify individuals incorrectly. This thesis has sought to overcome these weaknesses and provide, a comprehensive evaluation, including an analysis of smartphone-based motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope), understanding the variability of feature vectors during differing activities across a multi-day collection involving 60 participants. This framed into two experiments involving five types of activities: standard, fast, with a bag, downstairs, and upstairs walking. The first experiment explores the classification performance in order to understand whether a single classifier or multi-algorithmic approach would provide a better level of performance. The second experiment investigated the feature vector (comprising of a possible 304 unique features) to understand how its composition affects performance and for a comparison a more particular set of the minimal features are involved. The controlled dataset achieved performance exceeded the prior work using same and cross day methodologies (e.g., for the regular walk activity, the best results EER of 0.70% and EER of 6.30% for the same and cross day scenarios respectively). Moreover, multi-algorithmic approach achieved significant improvement over the single classifier approach and thus a more practical approach to managing the problem of feature vector variability. An Activity recognition model was applied to the real-life gait dataset containing a more significant number of gait samples employed from 44 users (7-10 days for each user). A human physical motion activity identification modelling was built to classify a given individual's activity signal into a predefined class belongs to. As such, the thesis implemented a novel real-world gait recognition system that recognises the subject utilising smartphone-based real-world dataset. It also investigates whether these authentication technologies can recognise the genuine user and rejecting an imposter. Real dataset experiment results are offered a promising level of security particularly when the majority voting techniques were applied. As well as, the proposed multi-algorithmic approach seems to be more reliable and tends to perform relatively well in practice on real live user data, an improved model employing multi-activity regarding the security and transparency of the system within a smartphone. Overall, results from the experimentation have shown an EER of 7.45% for a single classifier (All activities dataset). The multi-algorithmic approach achieved EERs of 5.31%, 6.43% and 5.87% for normal, fast and normal and fast walk respectively using both accelerometer and gyroscope-based features – showing a significant improvement over the single classifier approach. Ultimately, the evaluation of the smartphone-based, gait authentication system over a long period of time under realistic scenarios has revealed that it could provide a secured and appropriate activities identification and user authentication system

    Development of a Wireless Mobile Computing Platform for Fall Risk Prediction

    Falls are a major health risk with which the elderly and disabled must contend. Scientific research on smartphone-based gait detection systems using the Internet of Things (IoT) has recently become an important component in monitoring injuries due to these falls. Analysis of human gait for detecting falls is the subject of many research projects. Progress in these systems, the capabilities of smartphones, and the IoT are enabling the advancement of sophisticated mobile computing applications that detect falls after they have occurred. This detection has been the focus of most fall-related research; however, ensuring preventive measures that predict a fall is the goal of this health monitoring system. By performing a thorough investigation of existing systems and using predictive analytics, we built a novel mobile application/system that uses smartphone and smart-shoe sensors to predict and alert the user of a fall before it happens. The major focus of this dissertation has been to develop and implement this unique system to help predict the risk of falls. We used built-in sensors --accelerometer and gyroscope-- in smartphones and a sensor embedded smart-shoe. The smart-shoe contains four pressure sensors with a Wi-Fi communication module to unobtrusively collect data. The interactions between these sensors and the user resulted in distinct challenges for this research while also creating new performance goals based on the unique characteristics of this system. In addition to providing an exciting new tool for fall prediction, this work makes several contributions to current and future generation mobile computing research

    Comparing the Performance of Machine Learning Algorithms for Human Activities Recognition using WISDM Dataset

    Human activity recognition is an important area of machine learning research as it has much utilization in different areas such as sports training, security, entertainment, ambient-assisted living, and health monitoring and management. Studying human activity recognition shows that researchers are interested mostly in the daily activities of the human. Mobile phones are used to be more than luxury products, it has become a kind of urgent need for a fast-moving world with rapid development. Nowadays mobile phone is well equipped with advanced processor, more memory, powerful battery and built-in sensors. This provides an opportunity to open up new areas of data mining for activity recognition of human’s daily living. In this paper, we tested experiment using Tree based Classifiers (Decision Tree, J48, JRIP, and Random Forest) and Rule based algorithms Classifiers (Naive Bayes and AD1) to classify six activities of daily life by using Weka tool. According to the tested results Random Forest classifier is more accurate than other classifiers

    Activity-Based User Authentication Using Smartwatches

    Smartwatches, which contain an accelerometer and gyroscope, have recently been used to implement gait and gesture- based biometrics; however, the prior studies have long-established drawbacks. For example, data for both training and evaluation was captured from single sessions (which is not realistic and can lead to overly optimistic performance results), and in cases when the multi-day scenario was considered, the evaluation was often either done improperly or the results are very poor (i.e., greater than 20% of EER). Moreover, limited activities were considered (i.e., gait or gestures), and data captured within a controlled environment which tends to be far less realistic for real world applications. Therefore, this study remedies these past problems by training and evaluating the smartwatch-based biometric system on data from different days, using large dataset that involved the participation of 60 users, and considering different activities (i.e., normal walking (NW), fast walking (FW), typing on a PC keyboard (TypePC), playing mobile game (GameM), and texting on mobile (TypeM)). Unlike the prior art that focussed on simply laboratory controlled data, a more realistic dataset, which was captured within un-constrained environment, is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. Two principal experiments were carried out focusing upon constrained and un-constrained environments. The first experiment included a comprehensive analysis of the aforementioned activities and tested under two different scenarios (i.e., same and cross day). By using all the extracted features (i.e., 88 features) and the same day evaluation, EERs of the acceleration readings were 0.15%, 0.31%, 1.43%, 1.52%, and 1.33% for the NW, FW, TypeM, TypePC, and GameM respectively. The EERs were increased to 0.93%, 3.90%, 5.69%, 6.02%, and 5.61% when the cross-day data was utilized. For comparison, a more selective set of features was used and significantly maximize the system performance under the cross day scenario, at best EERs of 0.29%, 1.31%, 2.66%, 3.83%, and 2.3% for the aforementioned activities respectively. A realistic methodology was used in the second experiment by using data collected within unconstrained environment. A light activity detection approach was developed to divide the raw signals into gait (i.e., NW and FW) and stationary activities. Competitive results were reported with EERs of 0.60%, 0% and 3.37% for the NW, FW, and stationary activities respectively. The findings suggest that the nature of the signals captured are sufficiently discriminative to be useful in performing transparent and continuous user authentication.University of Kuf
