    Collective Identity Formation on Instagram – Investigating the Social Movement Fridays for Future

    In recent years, social media changed the way individuals participate in social movements. While activists demonstrate on the street to fight for a public goal, members of specific movements can also act collective online. Thus, different aspects might influence the formation of collective identity and therefore drive collective action on social media. This study combines the perspectives of social identity- and identity theory in order to examine how members of an opinion-based group contribute to the collective group/social identity formation and therefore, to collective action. To this end, we applied automated text classification techniques to Instagram communication related to the social movement Fridays for Future. Analysing 1,137 comments showed that individuals mainly express Group Cohesion and Emotional Attachment rather than Solidarity by commenting on Instagram.     Educational theory has purported the notion that student-centric modes of learning are more effective in enhancing student engagement and by extension, learning outcomes. However, the translation of this theoretical pedagogy of learning into an applied model for medical training has been wrought with difficulty due to the structural complexity of creating a classroom environment that enables students to exercise full autonomy. In this paper, we propose an intelligent computational e-learning platform for case-based learning (CBL) in Medicine that enriches and enhances the learning experiences of medical students by exposing them to simulated real-world clinical contexts. We argue that computational systems in Medicine should not merely provide a passive outlay of information, but instead promote active engagement through an immersive learning experience. This is achieved through a digital platform that renders a virtual patient simulation, which allows students to assess, diagnose, treat and test patients as they would in the real-world

    A framework of quality assessment methods for crowdsourced geographic information : a systematic literature review

    Collaboration is the foundation to strengthen disaster preparedness and for effective emergency response actions at all levels. Some studies have highlighted that remote volunteers, i.e., volunteers supported by Web 2.0 technologies, possess the potential to strengthen humanitarian relief organizations by offering information regarding disaster-affected people and infrastructure. Although studies have explored various aspects of this topic, none of those provided an overview of the state-of-the-art of researches on the collaboration among humanitarian organizations and communities of remote volunteers. With the aim of overcoming this gap, a systematic literature review was conducted on the existing research works. Therefore, the main contribution of this work lies in examining the state of research in this field and in identifying potential research gaps. The results show that most of the research works addresses the general domain of disaster management, whereas only few of them address the domain of humanitarian logistics.     The role of social media for collective behaviour development in response to natural disasters

    With the emergence of social media, user-generated content from people affected by disasters has gained significant importance. Thus far, research has focused on identifying categories and taxonomies of the types of information being shared among users during times of disasters. However, there is a lack of theorizing with the dynamics of and relationships between the identified concepts. In our current research, we applied probabilistic topic modelling approach to identify topics from Chennai disaster Twitter data. We manually interpreted and further clustered the topics into generic categories and themes, and traced their development over the days of the disaster. Finally, we build a process model to explore an emerging phenomenon on social media during a disaster. We argue that the conditions/activities such as collective awareness, collective concern, collective empathy and support are necessary conditions for people to feel, respond, and act as forms of collective behaviour

    The Adoption of social media analytics for crisis management – Challenges and Opportunities

    We live in a time when anyone can change from a passive bystander to an active communicator during a crisis. This makes user-generated content a potentially valuable source of information for emergency management agencies. However, at present, agencies still hesitate to use social media during crises. This research seeks to identify the challenges emergency management agencies face in using social media analytics within their organisations. We conducted a systematic literature review and interviewed ten emergency management professionals across six expert interview sessions. Afterwards, we used the Technology-Organization-Environment Framework to conceptualise our findings. Our study reveals fruitful opportunities for the continuous collaboration of both information systems research and emergency management agencies. Accordingly, information systems research can support emergency management agencies in using social media data for efficient crisis management by enhancing awareness of the benefits of social media analytics and helping to overcome organisational and technological challenges
