Soil management in organic fruit growing
In the EU-standards you will find a period of three years for converting your orchard from conventional into organic. But conversion of your way of thinking about the orchard system and conversion of your root system and soil will take double time. The focus must change from curative to preventive. Production, growth regulation, fertilisation, undergrowth, weed control and water management all come together in the overall soil management
Octanol/Water Partitioning Coefficients of PCB Mixtures for Environmental Fate and Transport
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a human and environmental toxin introduced to the environment from the 1920’s to the 1970’s from manufacturing items such as transformers and capacitors. PCBs remain in the environment today due to their low water solubility and resistance to chemical reaction. Due to their properties PCBs bioaccumulate in the environment and pose health risks to animals and humans, as they are deemed a probable carcinogen by the EPA. Octanol-water partitioning coefficients are a means of measuring how PCBs will travel in the environment, either partitioning to water or into organic carbon. Octanol-water partitioning coefficients will be determined for individual congeners of PCB and for solutions of groups of PCB congeners to see if mixtures of PCBs behaved differently from groups of PCBS. Partitioning coefficients were experimentally determined for individual PCBs and groups of PCBs
Plasma-polymerized coating for polycarbonate: Single-layer, abrasion resistant, and antireflection
Plasma-polymerized vinyl trimethoxy silane films were deposited on transparent polycarbonate substrates. The adherent, clear films protected the substrates from abrasion and also served as antireflection coatings. Post-treatment of the vinyl trimethoxy silane films in an oxygen glow discharge further improved their abrasion resistance. The coatings were characterized by elemental analysis of the bulk, ESCA analysis of the surface, transmission, thickness, abrasion resistance, haze, and adhesion. This patented process is currently used by the world's largest manufacturers of non-prescription sunglasses to protect the plastic glasses from scratching and thereby to increase their useful lifetime
The long winter model of Martian biology: A speculation
An estimated mean thickness of about 1 km of frost in the Martian north polar cap summer remnant, if vaporized, would yield about 1000 g/sq cm of atmosphere over the planet, higher global temperatures through the greenhouse effect, and a greatly increased likelihood of liquid water. Vaporization of such cap remnants may occur twice each equinoctial precession, and Martian organisms may now be in cryptobiotic repose awaiting the end of the long precessional winter. The Viking biology experiments can test this hypothesis
Volatile products in the corrosion of Cr, Mo, Ti and four superalloys exposed to O2 containing H2O and gaseous NaCl
Cooled target collection techniques were used to study the formation of volatile products when samples of Cr, Ti, IN-738, 713C, NASA-TRW VIA and B-1900 were exposed, at elevated temperatures, to oxidizing environments containing H2O(g) and NaCl(g). Samples were heated to 1050 C in one atmosphere of slowly flowing oxygen, saturated with water at 21 C, and containing about 50 ppm NaCl(g). Volatile products were detected for all materials except B-1900 and Ti. High pressure mass spectrometric sampling was used to directly identify volatile products emanating from samples of Cr and IN-738 subject to the above environments
Chlorine and Bromine Isotope Fractionation of Halogenated Organic Pollutants on Gas Chromatography Columns
Compound-specific chlorine/bromine isotope analysis (CSIA-Cl/Br) has become a
useful approach for degradation pathway investigation and source appointment of
halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). CSIA-Cl/Br is usually conducted by gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which could be negatively impacted by
chlorine and bromine isotope fractionation of HOPs on GC columns. In this
study, 31 organochlorines and 4 organobromines were systematically investigated
in terms of Cl/Br isotope fractionation on GC columns using GC-double focus
magnetic-sector high resolution MS (GC-DFS-HRMS). On-column chlorine/bromine
isotope fractionation behaviors of the HOPs were explored, presenting various
isotope fractionation modes and extents. Twenty-nine HOPs exhibited inverse
isotope fractionation, and only polychlorinated biphenyl-138 (PCB-138) and
PCB-153 presented normal isotope fractionation. And no observable isotope
fractionation was found for the rest four HOPs, i.e., PCB-101,
1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran, PCB-180 and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran.
The isotope fractionation extents of different HOPs varied from below the
observable threshold (0.50%) to 7.31% (PCB-18). The mechanisms of the on-column
chlorine/bromine isotope fractionation were tentatively interpreted with the
Craig-Gordon model and a modified two-film model. Inverse isotope effects and
normal isotope effects might contribute to the total isotope effects together
and thus determine the isotope fractionation directions and extents. Proposals
derived from the main results of this study for CSIA-Cl/Br research were
provided for improving the precision and accuracy of CSIA-Cl/Br results. The
findings of this study will shed light on the development of CSIA-Cl/Br methods
using GC-MS techniques, and help to implement the research using CSIA-Cl/Br to
investigate the environmental behaviors and pollution sources of HOPs.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figure

Vinyl pyridines including vinyl stilbazole materials and vinyl styrylpyridine oligomer materials are disclosed. These vinylpyridines form copolymers with bismaleimides which copolymers have good fire retardancy and decreased brittleness. The cure temperatures of the copolymers are substantially below the cure temperatures of the bismaleimides alone. Reinforced composites made from the cured copolymers are disclosed as well
