Interoperability between Multimedia Collections for Content and Metadata-Based Searching

Artiste is a European project developing a cross-collection search system for art galleries and museums. It combines image content retrieval with text based retrieval and uses RDF mappings in order to integrate diverse databases. The test sites of the Louvre, Victoria and Albert Museum, Uffizi Gallery and National Gallery London provide their own database schema for existing metadata, avoiding the need for migration to a common schema. The system will accept a query based on one museum’s fields and convert them, through an RDF mapping into a form suitable for querying the other collections. The nature of some of the image processing algorithms means that the system can be slow for some computations, so the system is session-based to allow the user to return to the results later. "Im Rahmen seines Programms 'Neue Medien in der Bildung' finanziert das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung seit April 2001 das bundesweite universitäre Kooperationsprojekt 'prometheus - das verteilte digitale Bildarchiv für Forschung & Lehre'. prometheus hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, ein einheitliches Interface zu einer konzeptuell sehr großen Anzahl von verschiedenen Bilddatenbanken zur Verfügung zu stellen, wobei der Fokus auf Kunstgeschichte und Archäologie liegt. Dem Projekt liegt die Philosophie zugrunde, dass die individuellen Bilddatenbanken arbiträre und verschiedene Formate haben können, die durch einen Server vereinheitlicht werden, der als technischer - und potentiell konzeptioneller - 'Broker' agiert. Basierend auf diesem verknüpften Bildarchiv und dessen medienspezifischem Potenzial bietet prometheus eine Vielseitigkeit an didaktischen Einheiten zur Unterstützung von akademischem Lehren und Lernen. Am 24. März 2003 wurde ein Verein gegründet, um die Langzeitexistenz und weitere Entwicklung des Projekts zu garantieren." (Autorenreferat)"As part of its 'New Media in Education'-program the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is financing the cooperative university project 'prometheus - the distributed digital image archive for research and academic teaching' since April 2001. The aim of prometheus is to provide a unified interface to a conceptually very large number of different image data bases focused on history of art and archaeology. The basic philosophy of the project is, that the individual image databases can have arbitrary different formats, which are unified by a server acting as a technical - and potentially conceptual - 'broker.'
