Duality based optical flow algorithms with applications
We consider the popular TV-L1 optical flow formulation, and the so-called dual-ity based algorithm for minimizing the TV-L1 energy. The original formulation is extended to allow for vector valued images, and minimization results are given. In addition we consider di↵erent definitions of total variation regulariza-tion, and related formulations of the optical flow problem that may be used with a duality based algorithm. We present a highly optimized algorithmic setup to estimate optical flows, and give five novel applications. The first application is registration of medical images, where X-ray images of di↵erent hands, taken using di↵erent imaging devices are registered using a TV-L1 optical flow algo-rithm. We propose to regularize the input images, using sparsity enhancing regularization of the image gradient to improve registration results. The second application is registration of 2D chromatograms, where registration only have to be done in one of the two dimensions, resulting in a vector valued registration problem with values having several hundred dimensions. Simultaneous Optical Flow and Intensity Estimation from an Event Camera
Event cameras are bio-inspired vision sensors which mimic retinas to measure per-pixel intensity change rather than outputting an actual intensity image. This proposed paradigm shift away from traditional frame cameras offers significant potential advantages: namely avoiding high data rates, dynamic range limitations and motion blur. Unfortunately, however, established computer vision algorithms may not at all be applied directly to event cameras. Methods proposed so far to reconstruct images, estimate optical flow, track a camera and reconstruct a scene come with severe restrictions on the environment or on the motion of the camera, e.g. allowing only rotation. Here, we propose, to the best of our knowledge, the first algorithm to simultaneously recover the motion field and brightness image, while the camera undergoes a generic motion through any scene. Our approach employs minimisation of a cost function that contains the asynchronous event data as well as spatial and temporal regularisation within a sliding window time interval. Our implementation relies on GPU optimisation and runs in near real-time. In a series of examples, we demonstrate the successful operation of our framework, including in situations where conventional cameras suffer from dynamic range limitations and motion blur

A Variational Model for Joint Motion Estimation and Image Reconstruction
The aim of this paper is to derive and analyze a variational model for the joint estimation of motion and reconstruction of image sequences, which is based on a time-continuous Eulerian motion model. The model can be set up in terms of the continuity equation or the brightness constancy equation. The analysis in this paper focuses on the latter for robust motion estimation on sequences of twodimensional images. We rigorously prove the existence of a minimizer in a suitable function space setting. Moreover, we discuss the numerical solution of the model based on primal-dual algorithms and investigate several examples. Finally, the benefits of our model compared to existing techniques, such as sequential image reconstruction and motion estimation, are shown.The work of the first author was also supported by the German

Approximate Nearest Neighbor Fields in Video
We introduce RIANN (Ring Intersection Approximate Nearest Neighbor search),
an algorithm for matching patches of a video to a set of reference patches in
real-time. For each query, RIANN finds potential matches by intersecting rings
around key points in appearance space. Its search complexity is reversely
correlated to the amount of temporal change, making it a good fit for videos,
where typically most patches change slowly with time. Experiments show that
RIANN is up to two orders of magnitude faster than previous ANN methods, and is
the only solution that operates in real-time. We further demonstrate how RIANN
can be used for real-time video processing and provide examples for a range of
real-time video applications, including colorization, denoising, and several

A Non-Local Structure Tensor Based Approach for Multicomponent Image Recovery Problems
Non-Local Total Variation (NLTV) has emerged as a useful tool in variational
methods for image recovery problems. In this paper, we extend the NLTV-based
regularization to multicomponent images by taking advantage of the Structure
Tensor (ST) resulting from the gradient of a multicomponent image. The proposed
approach allows us to penalize the non-local variations, jointly for the
different components, through various matrix norms with .
To facilitate the choice of the hyper-parameters, we adopt a constrained convex
optimization approach in which we minimize the data fidelity term subject to a
constraint involving the ST-NLTV regularization. The resulting convex
optimization problem is solved with a novel epigraphical projection method.
This formulation can be efficiently implemented thanks to the flexibility
offered by recent primal-dual proximal algorithms. Experiments are carried out
for multispectral and hyperspectral images. The results demonstrate the
interest of introducing a non-local structure tensor regularization and show
that the proposed approach leads to significant improvements in terms of
convergence speed over current state-of-the-art methods
