DESIGN OF EFFICIENT IN-NETWORK DATA PROCESSING AND DISSEMINATION FOR VANETS
By providing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communications, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), also known as the “networks on wheels”, can greatly enhance traffic safety, traffic efficiency and driving experience for intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, the unique features of VANETs, such as high mobility and uneven distribution of vehicular nodes, impose critical challenges of high efficiency and reliability for the implementation of VANETs. This dissertation is motivated by the great application potentials of VANETs in the design of efficient in-network data processing and dissemination. Considering the significance of message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, this dissertation research targets at enhancing the traffic safety and traffic efficiency, as well as developing novel commercial applications, based on VANETs, following four aspects: 1) accurate and efficient message aggregation to detect on-road safety relevant events, 2) reliable data dissemination to reliably notify remote vehicles, 3) efficient and reliable spatial data collection from vehicular sensors, and 4) novel promising applications to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs.
Specifically, to enable cooperative detection of safety relevant events on the roads, the structure-less message aggregation (SLMA) scheme is proposed to improve communication efficiency and message accuracy. The scheme of relative position based message dissemination (RPB-MD) is proposed to reliably and efficiently disseminate messages to all intended vehicles in the zone-of-relevance in varying traffic density. Due to numerous vehicular sensor data available based on VANETs, the scheme of compressive sampling based data collection (CS-DC) is proposed to efficiently collect the spatial relevance data in a large scale, especially in the dense traffic. In addition, with novel and efficient solutions proposed for the application specific issues of data dissemination and data collection, several appealing value-added applications for VANETs are developed to exploit the commercial potentials of VANETs, namely general purpose automatic survey (GPAS), VANET-based ambient ad dissemination (VAAD) and VANET based vehicle performance monitoring and analysis (VehicleView).
Thus, by improving the efficiency and reliability in in-network data processing and dissemination, including message aggregation, data dissemination and data collection, together with the development of novel promising applications, this dissertation will help push VANETs further to the stage of massive deployment
Managing Congestion in Vehicular Networks Using Tabu Search
© 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. In this era of communication, exponentially growing networks bring a lot of challenges to address for smoother network functionalities. Among them is efficiency in handling packet traffic to avoid and control congestion. A particular case is applicable to Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks, which are known with unbalanced resource utilisation, communication overheads, high transmission delay and least transmission capacity. This paper aims to minimise the delay and jitter for enhancing the Quality of Service (QoS) in Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANET) using tabu search algorithm with multi-channel allocation capability. We proposed a scheme that prioritises each message considering the basis of message type or its substances, such as crisis, reference point, and administration oriented etc., and uses tabu search for scheduling the transmission of queued messages in order to enhance the efficiency, security, and durability of VANET. A comprehensive simulation is conducted to validate the proposed scheme and to evaluate the performances in comparison with other state-of-the-art approaches
From MANET to people-centric networking: Milestones and open research challenges
In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications
A Communications-Oriented Perspective on Traffic Management Systems for Smart Cities: Challenges and Innovative Approaches
The growing size of cities and increasing population mobility have determined a rapid increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, which has resulted in many challenges for road traffic management authorities in relation to traffic congestion, accidents, and air pollution. Over the recent years, researchers from both industry and academia have been focusing their efforts on exploiting the advances in sensing, communication, and dynamic adaptive technologies to make the existing road traffic management systems (TMSs) more efficient to cope with the aforementioned issues in future smart cities. However, these efforts are still insufficient to build a reliable and secure TMS that can handle the foreseeable rise of population and vehicles in smart cities. In this survey, we present an up-to-date review of the different technologies used in the different phases involved in a TMS and discuss the potential use of smart cars and social media to enable fast and more accurate traffic congestion detection and mitigation. We also provide a thorough study of the security threats that may jeopardize the efficiency of the TMS and endanger drivers' lives. Furthermore, the most significant and recent European and worldwide projects dealing with traffic congestion issues are briefly discussed to highlight their contribution to the advancement of smart transportation. Finally, we discuss some open challenges and present our own vision to develop robust TMSs for future smart cities
Sensor Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems
Modern society faces serious problems with transportation systems, including but not limited to traffic congestion, safety, and pollution. Information communication technologies have gained increasing attention and importance in modern transportation systems. Automotive manufacturers are developing in-vehicle sensors and their applications in different areas including safety, traffic management, and infotainment. Government institutions are implementing roadside infrastructures such as cameras and sensors to collect data about environmental and traffic conditions. By seamlessly integrating vehicles and sensing devices, their sensing and communication capabilities can be leveraged to achieve smart and intelligent transportation systems. We discuss how sensor technology can be integrated with the transportation infrastructure to achieve a sustainable Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and how safety, traffic control and infotainment applications can benefit from multiple sensors deployed in different elements of an ITS. Finally, we discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed to enable a fully operational and cooperative ITS environment
Data Communication in VANETs: Survey, Applications and Challenges
International audienceVANETs have emerged as an exciting research and application area. Increasingly vehicles are being equipped with embedded sensors, processing and wireless communication capabilities. This has opened a myriad of possibilities for powerful and potential life-changing applications on safety, efficiency, comfort, public collaboration and participation, while they are on the road. Although, considered as a special case of a Mobile Ad Hoc Network, the high but constrained mobility of vehicles bring new challenges to data communication and application design in VANETs. This is due to their highly dynamic and intermittent connected topology and different application's QoS requirements. In this work, we survey VANETs focusing on their communicationand application challenges. In particular, we discuss the protocol stack of this type of network, and provide a qualitative comparison between most common protocols in the literature. We then present a detailed discussion of dfferent categories of VANET applications. Finally, we discuss open research problems to encourage the design of new VANET solutions

Location aware data aggregation for efficient message dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
The main contribution of this thesis is the LA mechanism - an intelligent, locationaware data aggregation mechanism for real-time observation, estimation and efficient dissemination of messages in VANETs. The proposed mechanism is based on a generic modelling approach which makes it applicable to any type of VANET applications. The data aggregation mechanism proposed in this thesis introduces location awareness technique which provides dynamic segmentation of the roads enabling efficient spatiotemporal database indexing. It further provides the location context to the messages without the use of advanced positioning systems like satellite navigation and digital maps. The mechanism ensures that the network load is significantly reduced by using the passive clustering and adaptive broadcasting to minimise the number of exchanged messages. The incoming messages are fused by Kalman filter providing the optimal estimation particularly useful in urban environment where incoming measurements are very frequent and can cause the vehicle to interpret them as noisy measurements. The scheme allows the comparison of aggregates and single observations which enables their merging and better overall accuracy. Old information in aggregates is removed by realtime database refreshing leaving only newer relevant information for a driver to make real-time decisions in traffic.
