The pseudo-self-similar traffic model: application and validation
Since the early 1990¿s, a variety of studies has shown that network traffic, both for local- and wide-area networks, has self-similar properties. This led to new approaches in network traffic modelling because most traditional traffic approaches result in the underestimation of performance measures of interest. Instead of developing completely new traffic models, a number of researchers have proposed to adapt traditional traffic modelling approaches to incorporate aspects of self-similarity. The motivation for doing so is the hope to be able to reuse techniques and tools that have been developed in the past and with which experience has been gained. One such approach for a traffic model that incorporates aspects of self-similarity is the so-called pseudo self-similar traffic model. This model is appealing, as it is easy to understand and easily embedded in Markovian performance evaluation studies. In applying this model in a number of cases, we have perceived various problems which we initially thought were particular to these specific cases. However, we recently have been able to show that these problems are fundamental to the pseudo self-similar traffic model. In this paper we review the pseudo self-similar traffic model and discuss its fundamental shortcomings. As far as we know, this is the first paper that discusses these shortcomings formally. We also report on ongoing work to overcome some of these problems
Implementing energy saving algorithms for Ethernet link aggregates with ONOS
During the last few years, there has been plenty of research for reducing
energy consumption in telecommunication infrastructure. However, many of the
proposals remain unim-plemented due to the lack of flexibility in legacy
networks. In this paper we demonstrate how the software defined networking
(SDN) capabilities of current networking equipment can be used to implement
some of these energy saving algorithms. In particular, we developed an ONOS
application to realize an energy-aware traffic scheduler to a bundle link made
up of Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) links between two SDN switches. We show
how our application is able to dynamically adapt to the traffic characteristics
and save energy by concentrating the traffic on as few ports as possible. This
way, unused ports remain in Low Power Idle (LPI) state most of the time, saving
energy.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Profiling Users by Modeling Web Transactions
Users of electronic devices, e.g., laptop, smartphone, etc. have
characteristic behaviors while surfing the Web. Profiling this behavior can
help identify the person using a given device. In this paper, we introduce a
technique to profile users based on their web transactions. We compute several
features extracted from a sequence of web transactions and use them with
one-class classification techniques to profile a user. We assess the efficacy
and speed of our method at differentiating 25 users on a dataset representing 6
months of web traffic monitoring from a small company network.Comment: Extended technical report of an IEEE ICDCS 2017 publicatio
Characterisation of real GPRS traffic with analytical tools
With GPRS and UMTS networks lunched, wireless multimedia services are commercially becoming the most attractive applications next to voice. Because of the nature of bursty, packet-switched schemes and multiple data rates, the traditional Erlang approach and Poisson models for characterising voice-centric services traffic are not suitable for studying wireless multimedia services traffic. Therefore, research on the characterisation of wireless multimedia services traffic is very challenging. The typical reference for the study of wireless multimedia services traffic is wired Internet services traffic. However, because of the differences in network protocol, bandwidth, and QoS requirements between wired and wireless services, their traffic characterisations may not be similar. Wired network Internet traffic shows self-similarity, long-range dependence and its file sizes exhibit heavy-tailedness. This paper reports the use of existing tools to analyse real GPRS traffic data to establish whether wireless multimedia services traffic have similar properties as wired Internet services traffic
