On the measurement of sustainability of rural water supply in India: A SupervaluationistâDegree Theory approach
The paper proposes an empirical methodology for understanding the nature and behavior of Sustainable Development as a vague and multidimensional concept by a case study of participatory and demand determined Rural Drinking water Supply systems in India. It combines for the first time, two of the most influential models â âSupervaluationismâ and âDegree Theoryâ- on the measurement of âVaguenessâ, for timely public intervention in reversing the process of Un-sustainability. Analysis clearly brings out the role of institutional, financial and environmental factors that should be part of Public Policy, for ensuring sustainability of potable water supplysustainability, supervaluationism, degree theory
Designing as Interpretation
The paper suggests an interpretative approach to the empirical study of design processes. Design processes are conceived as social processes of interpretation and construction of meaning, and potentially of context generation. In contrast to models which conceive designing as a goal-directed process, an interpretative approach suggests a methodological reorientation. It assumes that design goals are more or less incomplete and vague at the beginning of a design process and are interpreted in contexts and in part are created by designers in the design process on the basis of their experience, embodied skills, and practices. The interpretative paradigm in design research seeks to observe, investigate, and describe practices that designers use in the process. Rather than attempting to determine and prescribe how practitioners ought to do their work, the research question is on how work is actually done - how interpretation is achieved by designers in particular design processes.
An extract is analysed in some detail in the paper. These data are taken from the transcript of a case study of a design process in practice. Sociological and socio-linguistic (âsensitizingâ) concepts such as frames and contexts are adopted to describe and analyze some practices observed in the episodes. The paper focuses on an aspect of designing â various forms of involvement and stances designersâ take on in the meaning making process of interpretative design work. Interpretative analysis takes into account designersâ alignments which constitute âparticipation frameworksâ and ground designersâ multimodal practices in different media (language, drawing, gesture). Goffmanâs (1981) concept of âfootingâ is used to reveal more subtle shifts in stances that designers take in designing. Investigation of referential practices designers use in some utterances in the observed design conversation suggests that designers step into, displace, and position themselves in transformed, âkeyedâ situations to experience the solicitations of design situations more directly and to take the role of others as well as the role of objects. These practices appear to be part of designersâ ability to construct meaning by establishing perspectives and getting âmaximal gripâ on design situations so as to exert their skills. Analysis of types of stances designers take in an observed design process, some of which addressed in the paper, may provide a way to describe an aspect of designersâ artistry and to characterize the particularities of unique design processes. The suggested approach is intended to contribute to a better theoretical understanding of designing and to the methodology of design research as an âepistemology of practiceâ. Interpretative analysis also aims to provide description of designersâ practices which may, as its practical benefits, contribute to âthe reflective turnâ in design research.

The un-designability of the virtual. Design from problem-solving to problem-finding.
Drawing on Gilles Deleuze (1991) this chapter investigates the virtual as what problematizes the possible by inserting contingency in the process of emergence of the new. The tension between the virtual as what is uniquely placed to engender true innovation, and its aleatory and unforeseeable nature mirrors the tension existing in design between form-making and the need to acknowledge contingency. In embracing the un-designability of the virtual, design is called to take contingency and material variability as forces impinging on the process of emergence of the new. The chapter puts forward a new model for design research that shifts from problem-solving to problem-finding and is predicated on the undesigned at the core of design itself. This points to a further shift: the role of designer from creator to facilitator, teasing form out of the formless, engaged with the manifold forces expressed through material variation
Learning Hybrid Process Models From Events: Process Discovery Without Faking Confidence
Process discovery techniques return process models that are either formal
(precisely describing the possible behaviors) or informal (merely a "picture"
not allowing for any form of formal reasoning). Formal models are able to
classify traces (i.e., sequences of events) as fitting or non-fitting. Most
process mining approaches described in the literature produce such models. This
is in stark contrast with the over 25 available commercial process mining tools
that only discover informal process models that remain deliberately vague on
the precise set of possible traces. There are two main reasons why vendors
resort to such models: scalability and simplicity. In this paper, we propose to
combine the best of both worlds: discovering hybrid process models that have
formal and informal elements. As a proof of concept we present a discovery
technique based on hybrid Petri nets. These models allow for formal reasoning,
but also reveal information that cannot be captured in mainstream formal
models. A novel discovery algorithm returning hybrid Petri nets has been
implemented in ProM and has been applied to several real-life event logs. The
results clearly demonstrate the advantages of remaining "vague" when there is
not enough "evidence" in the data or standard modeling constructs do not "fit".
Moreover, the approach is scalable enough to be incorporated in

A model-driven method for the systematic literature review of qualitative empirical research
This paper explores a model-driven method for systematic literature reviews (SLRs), for use where the empirical studies found in the literature search are based on qualitative research. SLRs are an important component of the evidence-based practice (EBP) paradigm, which is receiving increasing attention in information systems (IS) but has not yet been widely-adopted. We illustrate the model-driven approach to SLRs via an example focused on the use of BPMN (Business Process Modelling Notation) in organizations. We discuss in detail the process followed in using the model-driven SLR method, and show how it is based on a hermeneutic cycle of reading and interpreting, in order to develop and refine a model which synthesizes the research findings of previous qualitative studies. This study can serve as an exemplar for other researchers wishing to carry out model-driven SLRs. We conclude with our reflections on the method and some suggestions for further researc

Rethinking Security Incident Response: The Integration of Agile Principles
In today's globally networked environment, information security incidents can
inflict staggering financial losses on organizations. Industry reports indicate
that fundamental problems exist with the application of current linear
plan-driven security incident response approaches being applied in many
organizations. Researchers argue that traditional approaches value containment
and eradication over incident learning. While previous security incident
response research focused on best practice development, linear plan-driven
approaches and the technical aspects of security incident response, very little
research investigates the integration of agile principles and practices into
the security incident response process. This paper proposes that the
integration of disciplined agile principles and practices into the security
incident response process is a practical solution to strengthening an
