    Spoken content retrieval: A survey of techniques and technologies

    Speech media, that is, digital audio and video containing spoken content, has blossomed in recent years. Large collections are accruing on the Internet as well as in private and enterprise settings. This growth has motivated extensive research on techniques and technologies that facilitate reliable indexing and retrieval. Spoken content retrieval (SCR) requires the combination of audio and speech processing technologies with methods from information retrieval (IR). SCR research initially investigated planned speech structured in document-like units, but has subsequently shifted focus to more informal spoken content produced spontaneously, outside of the studio and in conversational settings. This survey provides an overview of the field of SCR encompassing component technologies, the relationship of SCR to text IR and automatic speech recognition and user interaction issues. It is aimed at researchers with backgrounds in speech technology or IR who are seeking deeper insight on how these fields are integrated to support research and development, thus addressing the core challenges of SCR

    Automatic analysis of medical dialogue in the home hemodialysis domain : structure induction and summarization

However, understanding even a perfect transcript of spoken dialogue is challenging for humans because of the lack of structure and the verbosity of dialogues. This work presents a first step towards automatic analysis of spoken medical dialogue. The backbone of our approach is an abstraction of a dialogue into a sequence of semantic categories. This abstraction uncovers structure in informal, verbose conversation between a caregiver and a patient, thereby facilitating automatic processing of dialogue content. Our method induces this structure based on a range of linguistic and contextual features that are integrated in a supervised machine-learning framework. Our model has a classification accuracy of 73%, compared to 33% achieved by a majority baseline (p<0.01). We demonstrate the utility of this structural abstraction by incorporating it into an automatic dialogue summarizer. Our evaluation results indicate that automatically generated summaries exhibit high resemblance to summaries written by humans and significantly outperform random selections (p<0.0001) in precision and recall.(cont.) In addition, task-based evaluation shows that physicians can reasonably answer questions related to patient care by looking at the automatically-generated summaries alone, in contrast to the physicians' performance when they were given summaries from a naive summarizer (p<0.05). This is a significant result because it spares the physician from the need to wade through irrelevant material ample in dialogue transcripts.     Analyzing collaborative learning processes automatically

    In this article we describe the emerging area of text classification research focused on the problem of collaborative learning process analysis both from a broad perspective and more specifically in terms of a publicly available tool set called TagHelper tools. Analyzing the variety of pedagogically valuable facets of learners’ interactions is a time consuming and effortful process. Improving automated analyses of such highly valued processes of collaborative learning by adapting and applying recent text classification technologies would make it a less arduous task to obtain insights from corpus data. This endeavor also holds the potential for enabling substantially improved on-line instruction both by providing teachers and facilitators with reports about the groups they are moderating and by triggering context sensitive collaborative learning support on an as-needed basis. In this article, we report on an interdisciplinary research project, which has been investigating the effectiveness of applying text classification technology to a large CSCL corpus that has been analyzed by human coders using a theory-based multidimensional coding scheme. We report promising results and include an in-depth discussion of important issues such as reliability, validity, and efficiency that should be considered when deciding on the appropriateness of adopting a new technology such as TagHelper tools. One major technical contribution of this work is a demonstration that an important piece of the work towards making text classification technology effective for this purpose is designing and building linguistic pattern detectors, otherwise known as features, that can be extracted reliably from texts and that have high predictive power for the categories of discourse actions that the CSCL community is interested in

    Unsupervised modeling of latent topics and lexical units in speech audio

In this thesis, we describe a zero-resource framework that automatically discovers important words, phrases and topical themes present in an audio corpus. This system employs a segmental dynamic time warping (S-DTW) algorithm for acoustic pattern discovery in conjunction with a probabilistic model which treats the topic and pseudo-word identity of each discovered pattern as hidden variables. By applying an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm, our method estimates the latent probability distributions over the pseudo-words and topics associated with the discovered patterns.     Automatic Summarization

    It has now been 50 years since the publication of Luhn’s seminal paper on automatic summarization. During these years the practical need for automatic summarization has become increasingly urgent and numerous papers have been published on the topic. As a result, it has become harder to find a single reference that gives an overview of past efforts or a complete view of summarization tasks and necessary system components. This article attempts to fill this void by providing a comprehensive overview of research in summarization, including the more traditional efforts in sentence extraction as well as the most novel recent approaches for determining important content, for domain and genre specific summarization and for evaluation of summarization. We also discuss the challenges that remain open, in particular the need for language generation and deeper semantic understanding of language that would be necessary for future advances in the field

    Discourse structure and language technology

    This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an Alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively.An increasing number of researchers and practitioners in Natural Language Engineering face the prospect of having to work with entire texts, rather than individual sentences. While it is clear that text must have useful structure, its nature may be less clear, making it more difficult to exploit in applications. This survey of work on discourse structure thus provides a primer on the bases of which discourse is structured along with some of their formal properties. It then lays out the current state-of-the-art with respect to algorithms for recognizing these different structures, and how these algorithms are currently being used in Language Technology applications. After identifying resources that should prove useful in improving algorithm performance across a range of languages, we conclude by speculating on future discourse structure-enabled technology.Peer Reviewe

    Harvesting and summarizing user-generated content for advanced speech-based human-computer interaction

However, online communities and social networks are expanding rapidly and it is impossible for people to browse and digest all the information via simple search interface. To help users obtain information more efficiently, both the interface for data access and the information representation need to be improved. An intuitive and personalized interface, such as a dialogue system, could be an ideal assistant, which engages a user in a continuous dialogue to garner the user's interest and capture the user's intent, and assists the user via speech-navigated interactions. In addition, there is a great need for a type of application that can harvest data from the Web, summarize the information in a concise manner, and present it in an aggregated yet natural way such as direct human dialogue. This thesis, therefore, aims to conduct research on a universal framework for developing speech-based interface that can aggregate user-generated Web content and present the summarized information via speech-based human-computer interaction. To accomplish this goal, several challenges must be met. Firstly, how to interpret users' intention from their spoken input correctly? Secondly, how to interpret the semantics and sentiment of user-generated data and aggregate them into structured yet concise summaries? Lastly, how to develop a dialogue modeling mechanism to handle discourse and present the highlighted information via natural language? This thesis explores plausible approaches to tackle these challenges. We will explore a lexicon modeling approach for semantic tagging to improve spoken language understanding and query interpretation. We will investigate a parse-and-paraphrase paradigm and a sentiment scoring mechanism for information extraction from unstructured user-generated data. We will also explore sentiment-involved dialogue modeling and corpus-based language generation approaches for dialogue and discourse.     Semantic consistency in text generation

    Automatic input-grounded text generation tasks process input texts and generate human-understandable natural language text for the processed information. The development of neural sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) models, which are usually trained in an end-to-end fashion, pushed the frontier of the performance on text generation tasks expeditiously. However, they are claimed to be defective in semantic consistency w.r.t. their corresponding input texts. Also, not only the models are to blame. The corpora themselves always include examples whose output is semantically inconsistent to its input. Any model that is agnostic to such data divergence issues will be prone to semantic inconsistency. Meanwhile, the most widely-used overlap-based evaluation metrics comparing the generated texts to their corresponding references do not evaluate the input-output semantic consistency explicitly, which makes this problem hard to detect. In this thesis, we focus on studying semantic consistency in three automatic text generation scenarios: Data-to-text Generation, Single Document Abstractive Summarization, and Chit-chat Dialogue Generation, by seeking for the answers to the following research questions: (1) how to define input-output semantic consistency in different text generation tasks? (2) how to quantitatively evaluate the input-output semantic consistency? (3) how to achieve better semantic consistency in individual tasks? We systematically define the semantic inconsistency phenomena in these three tasks as omission, intrinsic hallucination, and extrinsic hallucination. For Data-to-text Generation, we jointly learn a sentence planner that tightly controls which part of input source gets generated in what sequence, with a neural seq2seq text generator, to decrease all three types of semantic inconsistency in model-generated texts. The evaluation results confirm that the texts generated by our model contain much less omissions while maintaining low level of extrinsic hallucinations without sacrificing fluency compared to seq2seq models. For Single Document Abstractive Summarization, we reduce the level of extrinsic hallucinations in training data by automatically introducing assisting articles to each document-summary instance to provide the supplemental world-knowledge that is present in the summary but missing from the doc ument. With the help of a novel metric, we show that seq2seq models trained with as sisting articles demonstrate less extrinsic hallucinations than the ones trained without them. For Chit-chat Dialogue Generation, by filtering out the omitted and hallucinated examples from training set using a newly introduced evaluation metric, and encoding it into the neural seq2seq response generation models as a control factor, we diminish the level of omissions and extrinsic hallucinations in the generated dialogue responses

    PersoNER: Persian named-entity recognition

    © 1963-2018 ACL. Named-Entity Recognition (NER) is still a challenging task for languages with low digital resources. The main difficulties arise from the scarcity of annotated corpora and the consequent problematic training of an effective NER pipeline. To abridge this gap, in this paper we target the Persian language that is spoken by a population of over a hundred million people world-wide. We first present and provide ArmanPerosNERCorpus, the first manually-annotated Persian NER corpus. Then, we introduce PersoNER, an NER pipeline for Persian that leverages a word embedding and a sequential max-margin classifier. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is capable of achieving interesting MUC7 and CoNNL scores while outperforming two alternatives based on a CRF and a recurrent neural network
