    When Infodemic Meets Epidemic: a Systematic Literature Review

    Epidemics and outbreaks present arduous challenges requiring both individual and communal efforts. Social media offer significant amounts of data that can be leveraged for bio-surveillance. They also provide a platform to quickly and efficiently reach a sizeable percentage of the population, hence their potential impact on various aspects of epidemic mitigation. The general objective of this systematic literature review is to provide a methodical overview of the integration of social media in different epidemic-related contexts. Three research questions were conceptualized for this review, resulting in over 10000 publications collected in the first PRISMA stage, 129 of which were selected for inclusion. A thematic method-oriented synthesis was undertaken and identified 5 main themes related to social media enabled epidemic surveillance, misinformation management, and mental health. Findings uncover a need for more robust applications of the lessons learned from epidemic post-mortem documentation. A vast gap exists between retrospective analysis of epidemic management and result integration in prospective studies. Harnessing the full potential of social media in epidemic related tasks requires streamlining the results of epidemic forecasting, public opinion understanding and misinformation propagation, all while keeping abreast of potential mental health implications. Pro-active prevention has thus become vital for epidemic curtailment and containment

    Data on social media is abundant and offers valuable information that can be utilised for a range of purposes. Users share their experiences and opinions on various topics, ranging from their personal life to the community and the world, in real-time. In comparison to conventional data sources, social media is cost-effective to obtain, is up-to-date and reaches a larger audience. By analysing this rich data source, it can contribute to solving societal issues and promote social impact in an equitable manner. In this thesis, I present my research in exploring innovative applications using \ac{NLP} and machine learning to identify patterns and extract actionable insights from social media data to ultimately make a positive impact on society. First, I evaluate the impact of an intervention program aimed at promoting inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for underrepresented communities using social media data. Second, I develop EmoBERT, an emotion-based variant of the BERT model, for detecting fine-grained emotions to gauge the well-being of a population during significant disease outbreaks. Third, to improve public health surveillance on social media, I demonstrate how emotions expressed in social media posts can be incorporated into health mention classification using an intermediate task fine-tuning and multi-feature fusion approach. I also propose a multi-task learning framework to model the literal meanings of disease and symptom words to enhance the classification of health mentions. Fourth, I create a new health mention dataset to address the imbalance in health data availability between developing and developed countries, providing a benchmark alternative to the traditional standards used in digital health research. Finally, I leverage the power of pretrained language models to analyse religious activities, recognised as social determinants of health, during disease outbreaks

    Property price prediction: a model utilising sentiment analysis

    The increase in the use of social media has led many researchers and companies to investigate the potential uses of the data that is generated by these social media platforms. This research study investigates how the use of sentiment variables, obtained from the social media platform Twitter, can be used to augment housing transfer data in order to develop a predictive model. The Design Science Research (DSR) methodology was followed, guided by a Social Media Framework. Experimentation was required within the Design Cycle of the DSR methodology, which lead to the adoption of the Experimental Research methodology within this cycle. An initial literature review identified regression models for property price prediction. Through experimentation, Gradient Boosting regression was identified as an optimal regression model for this purpose. Thereafter a review of sentiment analysis models was conducted which resulted in the proposal of a CNN-LSTM model for the classification of Tweets. Initial experimentation conducted with this proposed model resulted in an obtained accuracy comparable to the top performing sentiment analysis models identified. A dataset obtained through SemEval, a series of evaluations of computational semantic analysis systems, was used for this phase. For the final experimentation, The CNN-LSTM model was used to obtain sentiment variables from Tweets that were collected from the Western Cape Province in 2017. This property dataset was augmented with the sentiment variables, after which experimentation was conducted by applying Gradient Boosting regression. The augmentation was done in two ways, either based on suburb pertaining to the property, or to the month in which the property was transferred. The results indicate that a model for Property Price Prediction Utilising Sentiment Analysis demonstrates a small improvement when suburb-based sentiment, obtained from Tweets with a minimum threshold per suburb, is utilised. An important finding was the fact that, when geo-coordinates are removed from the dataset, the sentiment variables replace them in the regression results, producing the same level as accuracy as when the coordinates are included

    Macro-micro approach for mining public sociopolitical opinion from social media

    During the past decade, we have witnessed the emergence of social media, which has prominence as a means for the general public to exchange opinions towards a broad range of topics. Furthermore, its social and temporal dimensions make it a rich resource for policy makers and organisations to understand public opinion. In this thesis, we present our research in understanding public opinion on Twitter along three dimensions: sentiment, topics and summary. In the first line of our work, we study how to classify public sentiment on Twitter. We focus on the task of multi-target-specific sentiment recognition on Twitter, and propose an approach which utilises the syntactic information from parse-tree in conjunction with the left-right context of the target. We show the state-of-the-art performance on two datasets including a multi-target Twitter corpus on UK elections which we make public available for the research community. Additionally we also conduct two preliminary studies including cross-domain emotion classification on discourse around arts and cultural experiences, and social spam detection to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of our sentiment corpus. Our second line of work focuses on automatic topical clustering of tweets. Our aim is to group tweets into a number of clusters, with each cluster representing a meaningful topic, story, event or a reason behind a particular choice of sentiment. We explore various ways of tackling this challenge and propose a two-stage hierarchical topic modelling system that is efficient and effective in achieving our goal. Lastly, for our third line of work, we study the task of summarising tweets on common topics, with the goal to provide informative summaries for real-world events/stories or explanation underlying the sentiment expressed towards an issue/entity. As most existing tweet summarisation approaches rely on extractive methods, we propose to apply state-of-the-art neural abstractive summarisation model for tweets. We also tackle the challenge of cross-medium supervised summarisation with no target-medium training resources. To the best of our knowledge, there is no existing work on studying neural abstractive summarisation on tweets. In addition, we present a system for providing interactive visualisation of topic-entity sentiments and the corresponding summaries in chronological order. Throughout our work presented in this thesis, we conduct experiments to evaluate and verify the effectiveness of our proposed models, comparing to relevant baseline methods. Most of our evaluations are quantitative, however, we do perform qualitative analyses where it is appropriate. This thesis provides insights and findings that can be used for better understanding public opinion in social media

    Automated Assessment of the Aftermath of Typhoons Using Social Media Texts

    Disasters are one of the major threats to economics and human societies, causing substantial losses of human lives, properties and infrastructures. It has been our persistent endeavors to understand, prevent and reduce such disasters, and the popularization of social media is offering new opportunities to enhance disaster management in a crowd-sourcing approach. However, social media data is also characterized by its undue brevity, intense noise, and informality of language. The existing literature has not completely addressed these disadvantages, otherwise vast manual efforts are devoted to tackling these problems. The major focus of this research is on constructing a holistic framework to exploit social media data in typhoon damage assessment. The scope of this research covers data collection, relevance classification, location extraction and damage assessment while assorted approaches are utilized to overcome the disadvantages of social media data. Moreover, a semi-supervised or unsupervised approach is prioritized in forming the framework to minimize manual intervention. In data collection, query expansion strategy is adopted to optimize the search recall of typhoon-relevant information retrieval. Multiple filtering strategies are developed to screen the keywords and maintain the relevance to search topics in the keyword updates. A classifier based on a convolutional neural network is presented for relevance classification, with hashtags and word clusters as extra input channels to augment the information. In location extraction, a model is constructed by integrating Bidirectional Long Short-Time Memory and Conditional Random Fields. Feature noise correction layers and label smoothing are leveraged to handle the noisy training data. Finally, a multi-instance multi-label classifier identifies the damage relations in four categories, and the damage categories of a message are integrated with the damage descriptions score to obtain damage severity score for the message. A case study is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the framework. The outcomes indicate that the approaches and models developed in this study significantly improve in the classification of social media texts especially under the framework of semi-supervised or unsupervised learning. Moreover, the results of damage assessment from social media data are remarkably consistent with the official statistics, which demonstrates the practicality of the proposed damage scoring scheme
