    Supplementing Frequency Domain Interpolation Methods for Character Animation

    The animation of human characters entails difficulties exceeding those met simulating objects, machines or plants. A person's gait is a product of nature affected by mood and physical condition. Small deviations from natural movement are perceived with ease by an unforgiving audience. Motion capture technology is frequently employed to record human movement. Subsequent playback on a skeleton underlying the character being animated conveys many of the subtleties of the original motion. Played-back recordings are of limited value, however, when integration in a virtual environment requires movements beyond those in the motion library, creating a need for the synthesis of new motion from pre-recorded sequences. An existing approach involves interpolation between motions in the frequency domain, with a blending space defined by a triangle network whose vertices represent input motions. It is this branch of character animation which is supplemented by the methods presented in this thesis, with work undertaken in three distinct areas. The first is a streamlined approach to previous work. It provides benefits including an efficiency gain in certain contexts, and a very different perspective on triangle network construction in which they become adjustable and intuitive user-interface devices with an increased flexibility allowing a greater range of motions to be blended than was possible with previous networks. Interpolation-based synthesis can never exhibit the same motion variety as can animation methods based on the playback of rearranged frame sequences. Limitations such as this were addressed by the second phase of work, with the creation of hybrid networks. These novel structures use properties of frequency domain triangle blending networks to seamlessly integrate playback-based animation within them. The third area focussed on was distortion found in both frequency- and time-domain blending. A new technique, single-source harmonic switching, was devised which greatly reduces it, and adds to the benefits of blending in the frequency domain

    Metaheuristic Optimization Techniques for Articulated Human Tracking

    Four adaptive metaheuristic optimization algorithms are proposed and demonstrated: Adaptive Parameter Particle Swarm Optimization (AP-PSO), Modified Artificial Bat (MAB), Differential Mutated Artificial Immune System (DM-AIS) and hybrid Particle Swarm Accelerated Artificial Immune System (PSO-AIS). The algorithms adapt their search parameters on the basis of the fitness of obtained solutions such that a good fitness value favors local search, while a poor fitness value favors global search. This efficient feedback of the solution quality, imparts excellent global and local search characteristic to the proposed algorithms. The algorithms are tested on the challenging Articulated Human Tracking (AHT) problem whose objective is to infer human pose, expressed in terms of joint angles, from a continuous video stream. The Particle Filter (PF) algorithms, widely applied in generative model based AHT, suffer from the 'curse of dimensionality' and 'degeneracy' challenges. The four proposed algorithms show stable performance throughout the course of numerical experiments. DM-AIS performs best among the proposed algorithms followed in order by PSO-AIS, AP-PSO, and MBA in terms of Most Appropriate Pose (MAP) tracking error. The MAP tracking error of the proposed algorithms is compared with four heuristic approaches: generic PF, Annealed Particle Filter (APF), Partitioned Sampled Annealed Particle Filter (PSAPF) and Hierarchical Particle Swarm Optimization (HPSO). They are found to outperform generic PF with a confidence level of 95%, PSAPF and HPSO with a confidence level of 85%. While DM-AIS and PSO-AIS outperform APF with a confidence level of 80%. Further, it is noted that the proposed algorithms outperform PSAPF and HPSO using a significantly lower number of function evaluations, 2500 versus 7200. The proposed algorithms demonstrate reduced particle requirements, hence improving computational efficiency and helping to alleviate the 'curse of dimensionality'. The adaptive nature of the algorithms is found to guide the whole swarm towards the optimal solution by sharing information and exploring a wider solution space which resolves the 'degeneracy' challenge. Furthermore, the decentralized structure of the algorithms renders them insensitive to accumulation of error and allows them to recover from catastrophic failures due to loss of image data, sudden change in motion pattern or discrete instances of algorithmic failure. The performance enhancements demonstrated by the proposed algorithms, attributed to their balanced local and global search capabilities, makes real-time AHT applications feasible. Finally, the utility of the proposed algorithms in low-dimensional system identification problems as well as high-dimensional AHT problems demonstrates their applicability in various problem domains

    Animating Virtual Human for Virtual Batik Modeling

    This research paper describes a development of animating virtual human for virtual batik modeling project. The objectives of this project are to animate the virtual human, to map the cloth with the virtual human body, to present the batik cloth, and to evaluate the application in terms of realism of virtual human look, realism of virtual human movement, realism of 3D scene, application suitability, application usability, fashion suitability and user acceptance. The final goal is to accomplish an animated virtual human for virtual batik modeling. There are 3 essential phases which research and analysis (data collection of modeling and animating technique), development (model and animate virtual human, map cloth to body and add a music) and evaluation (evaluation of realism of virtual human look, realism of virtual human movement, realism of props, application suitability, application usability, fashion suitability and user acceptance). The result for application usability is the highest percentage which 90%. Result show that this application is useful to the people. In conclusion, this project has met the objective, which the realism is achieved by used a suitable technique for modeling and animating

    Virtual Reality Games for Motor Rehabilitation

    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    The impact of ocean eddies on tropical cyclone intensity on a global scale and the role of boundary layer dynamics

    Warm-core ocean eddies have been linked to the rapid intensification of tropical cyclones across the world’s oceans, from Hurricane Katrina in the Atlantic, to Supertyphoon Maemi in the Pacific and Cyclone Nargis in the Indian Ocean. Normally, sea-surface cooling induced by tropical cyclones acts as a brake on tropical cyclone intensity. By suppressing sea-surface cooling, warm-core eddies enable tropical cyclones to intensify further. Although coupled atmosphere-ocean forecasting models simulate sea-surface cooling, rapid intensification remains difficult to predict. A better understanding of the effect of warm-core eddies on tropical cyclone intensity is key to improving forecasts. In my thesis, I focus on the dynamics of the tropical cyclone boundary layer. Boundary layer dynamics influence the structure of the tropical cyclone circulation, which is inextricably linked to tropical cyclone intensity. While boundary layer dynamics are important for tropical cyclone intensity in atmosphere-only models, they have not been explored in coupled models. I address this gap by analysing a simulation of a tropical cyclone that decays due to sea-surface cooling and subsequently reintensifies when the sea-surface cooling is suppressed by a warm-core eddy. I find boundary layer dynamics play an important role modulating the decay and reintensification through changes in the structure of the tropical cyclone. Moreover, I find the differing rates of decay cannot be explained without boundary layer dynamics. These results underscore the importance of accurately representing boundary layer dynamics in coupled forecasting models and guide the choice of boundary layer parameterisations, which affect the ability of forecasting models to predict rapid intensification. In addition, I investigate the impact of warm-core and cold-core eddies on tropical cyclone intensity on a global scale with the first analysis of a global coupled simulation that resolves tropical cyclones and ocean eddies. I find encounters between tropical cyclones and ocean eddies are common. My analysis reveals that tropical cyclones that encounter warm-core eddies reach on average a higher peak intensity, whereas cold-core eddies do not have an effect on the average peak intensity. If these results prove to be robust, they point to a potential bias in future projections of tropical cyclone intensity, which are based on climate simulations that do not resolve ocean eddies. Disentangling the impact of ocean eddies in future eddy-resolving climate simulations will hinge on the sensitivity of tropical cyclone intensity to boundary layer schemes and our understanding of boundary layer dynamics
