A clustering particle swarm optimizer for dynamic optimization
This article is posted here with permission of the IEEE - Copyright @ 2009 IEEEIn the real world, many applications are nonstationary optimization problems. This requires that optimization algorithms need to not only find the global optimal solution but also track the trajectory of the changing global best solution in a dynamic environment. To achieve this, this paper proposes a clustering particle swarm optimizer (CPSO) for dynamic optimization problems. The algorithm employs hierarchical clustering method to track multiple peaks based on a nearest neighbor search strategy. A fast local search method is also proposed to find the near optimal solutions in a local promising region in the search space. Six test problems generated from a generalized dynamic benchmark generator (GDBG) are used to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. The numerical experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm for locating and tracking multiple optima in dynamic environments. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United Kingdom under Grant EP/E060722/1
Multi-layer local optima networks for the analysis of advanced local search-based algorithms
A Local Optima Network (LON) is a graph model that compresses the fitness
landscape of a particular combinatorial optimization problem based on a
specific neighborhood operator and a local search algorithm. Determining which
and how landscape features affect the effectiveness of search algorithms is
relevant for both predicting their performance and improving the design
process. This paper proposes the concept of multi-layer LONs as well as a
methodology to explore these models aiming at extracting metrics for fitness
landscape analysis. Constructing such models, extracting and analyzing their
metrics are the preliminary steps into the direction of extending the study on
single neighborhood operator heuristics to more sophisticated ones that use
multiple operators. Therefore, in the present paper we investigate a twolayer
LON obtained from instances of a combinatorial problem using bitflip and swap
operators. First, we enumerate instances of NK-landscape model and use the hill
climbing heuristic to build the corresponding LONs. Then, using LON metrics, we
analyze how efficiently the search might be when combining both strategies. The
experiments show promising results and demonstrate the ability of multi-layer
LONs to provide useful information that could be used for in metaheuristics
based on multiple operators such as Variable Neighborhood Search.Comment: Accepted in GECCO202
Intermittent Connectivity for Exploration in Communication-Constrained Multi-Agent Systems
Motivated by exploration of communication-constrained underground environments using robot teams, we study the problem of planning for intermittent connectivity in multi-agent systems. We propose a novel concept of information-consistency to handle situations where the plan is not initially known by all agents, and suggest an integer linear program for synthesizing information-consistent plans that also achieve auxiliary goals. Furthermore, inspired by network flow problems we propose a novel way to pose connectivity constraints that scales much better than previous methods. In the second part of the paper we apply these results in an exploration setting, and propose a clustering method that separates a large exploration problem into smaller problems that can be solved independently. We demonstrate how the resulting exploration algorithm is able to coordinate a team of ten agents to explore a large environment
System optimization by multiobjective genetic algorithms and analysis of the coupling between variables, constraints and objectives
This paper presents a methodology based on Multiobjective Genetic Algorithms (MOGAâs) for the design of electrical engineering systems. MOGAâs allow to optimize multiple heterogeneous criteria in complex systems, but also simplify couplings and sensitivity analysis by determining the evolution of design variables along the Pareto-optimal front. A rather simplified case study dealing with the optimal dimensioning of an inverter â permanent magnet motor â reducer â load association is carried out to demonstrate the interest of the approach
Multi-population methods with adaptive mutation for multi-modal optimization problems
open access journalThis paper presents an efficient scheme to locate multiple peaks on multi-modal optimization problems by using genetic algorithms (GAs). The premature convergence problem shows due to the loss of diversity, the multi-population technique can be applied to maintain the diversity in the population and the convergence capacity of GAs. The proposed scheme is the combination of multi-population with adaptive mutation operator, which determines two different mutation probabilities for different sites of the solutions. The probabilities are updated by the fitness and distribution of solutions in the search space during the evolution process. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm based on a set of benchmark problems in comparison with relevant algorithms
