Using Decision Trees for Coreference Resolution
This paper describes RESOLVE, a system that uses decision trees to learn how
to classify coreferent phrases in the domain of business joint ventures. An
experiment is presented in which the performance of RESOLVE is compared to the
performance of a manually engineered set of rules for the same task. The
results show that decision trees achieve higher performance than the rules in
two of three evaluation metrics developed for the coreference task. In addition
to achieving better performance than the rules, RESOLVE provides a framework
that facilitates the exploration of the types of knowledge that are useful for

Coreference-Based Summarization and Question Answering: a Case for High Precision Anaphor Resolution
Approaches to Text Summarization and Question Answering are known to benefit from the availability of coreference information. Based on an analysis of its contributions, a more detailed look at coreference processing for these applications will be proposed: it should be considered as a task of anaphor resolution rather than coreference resolution. It will be further argued that high precision approaches to anaphor resolution optimally match the specific requirements. Three such approaches will be described and empirically evaluated, and the implications for Text Summarization and Question Answering will be discussed
Vagueness and referential ambiguity in a large-scale annotated corpus
In this paper, we argue that difficulties in the definition of coreference itself contribute to lower inter-annotator agreement in certain cases. Data from a large referentially annotated corpus serves to corroborate this point, using a quantitative investigation to assess which effects or problems are likely to be the most prominent. Several examples where such problems occur are discussed in more detail, and we then propose a generalisation of Poesio, Reyle and Stevensonâs Justified Sloppiness Hypothesis to provide a unified model for these cases of disagreement and argue that a deeper understanding of the phenomena involved allows to tackle problematic cases in a more principled fashion than would be possible using only pre-theoretic intuitions
