Streaming Video QoE Modeling and Prediction: A Long Short-Term Memory Approach
HTTP based adaptive video streaming has become a popular choice of streaming
due to the reliable transmission and the flexibility offered to adapt to
varying network conditions. However, due to rate adaptation in adaptive
streaming, the quality of the videos at the client keeps varying with time
depending on the end-to-end network conditions. Further, varying network
conditions can lead to the video client running out of playback content
resulting in rebuffering events. These factors affect the user satisfaction and
cause degradation of the user quality of experience (QoE). It is important to
quantify the perceptual QoE of the streaming video users and monitor the same
in a continuous manner so that the QoE degradation can be minimized. However,
the continuous evaluation of QoE is challenging as it is determined by complex
dynamic interactions among the QoE influencing factors. Towards this end, we
present LSTM-QoE, a recurrent neural network based QoE prediction model using a
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network. The LSTM-QoE is a network of cascaded
LSTM blocks to capture the nonlinearities and the complex temporal dependencies
involved in the time varying QoE. Based on an evaluation over several publicly
available continuous QoE databases, we demonstrate that the LSTM-QoE has the
capability to model the QoE dynamics effectively. We compare the proposed model
with the state-of-the-art QoE prediction models and show that it provides
superior performance across these databases. Further, we discuss the state
space perspective for the LSTM-QoE and show the efficacy of the state space
modeling approaches for QoE prediction
Objective assessment of region of interest-aware adaptive multimedia streaming quality
Adaptive multimedia streaming relies on controlled
adjustment of content bitrate and consequent video quality variation in order to meet the bandwidth constraints of the communication
link used for content delivery to the end-user. The values of the easy to measure network-related Quality of Service metrics have no direct relationship with the way moving images are
perceived by the human viewer. Consequently variations in the video stream bitrate are not clearly linked to similar variation in the user perceived quality. This is especially true if some human visual system-based adaptation techniques are employed. As research has shown, there are certain image regions in each frame of a video sequence on which the users are more interested than in the others. This paper presents the Region of Interest-based Adaptive Scheme (ROIAS) which adjusts differently the regions within each frame of the streamed multimedia content based on the user interest in them. ROIAS is presented and discussed in terms of the adjustment algorithms employed and their impact on the human perceived video quality. Comparisons with existing approaches, including a constant quality adaptation scheme across the whole frame area, are performed employing two objective metrics which estimate user perceived video quality
Smart PIN: utility-based replication and delivery of multimedia content to mobile users in wireless networks
Next generation wireless networks rely on heterogeneous connectivity technologies to support various rich media services such as personal information storage, file sharing and multimedia streaming. Due to users’ mobility and dynamic characteristics of wireless networks, data availability in collaborating devices is a critical issue. In this context Smart PIN was proposed as a personal information network which focuses on performance of delivery and cost efficiency. Smart PIN uses a novel data replication scheme based on individual and overall system utility to best balance the requirements for static data and multimedia content delivery with variable device availability due to user mobility. Simulations show improved results in comparison with other general purpose data replication schemes in terms of data availability
A QoE based performance study of mobile peer-to-peer live video streaming
Peer-to-peer (P2P) Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are widely envisioned to be a practical platform to mobile live video streaming applications (e.g., mobile IPTV). However, the performance of such a streaming solution is still largely unknown. As such, in this paper, we aim to quantify the streaming performance using a Quality of Experience (QoE) based approach. Our simulation results indicate that video streaming performance is highly sensitive to the video chunk size. Specifically, if the chunk size is small, performance, in terms of both QoE and QoS, is guaranteed but at the expense of a higher overhead. On the other hand, if chunk size is increased, performance can degrade quite rapidly. Thus, it needs some careful fine tuning of chunk size to obtain satisfactory QoE performance. © 2012 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Perceptual quality assessment of real-world images and videos
The development of online social-media venues and rapid advances in technology by camera and mobile device manufacturers have led to the creation and consumption of a seemingly limitless supply of visual content. However, a vast majority of these digital images and videos are often afflicted with annoying artifacts during acquisition, subsequent storage, and transmission over the network. All these factors impact the quality of the visual media as perceived by a human observer, thereby compromising their quality of experience (QoE).
This dissertation focuses on constructing datasets that are representative of real-world image and video distortions as well as on designing algorithms that accurately predict the perceptual quality of images and videos. The primary goal of this research is to design and demonstrate automatic image and continuous-time video quality predictors that can effectively tackle the widely diverse authentic spatial, temporal, and network-induced distortions -- contrary to all present-day algorithms that operate on single, synthetic visual distortions and predict a single overall quality score for a given video.
I introduce an image quality database which contains a large number of images captured using a representative variety of modern mobile devices and afflicted with a widely diverse authentic image distortions. I will also describe the design of an online crowdsourcing system which aided a very large-scale image quality assessment subjective study. This data collection facilitated the design of a new image quality predictor that is founded on the principles of natural scene statistics of images in different color spaces and transform domains. This new quality method is capable of assessing the quality of images with complex mixtures of distortions and yields high correlation with human perception.
Pertaining to videos, this dissertation describes a video quality database created to understand the impact of network-induced distortions on an end user's quality of experience. I present the details of a large-scale subjective study that I conducted to gather continuous-time ground truth QoE scores on a collection of 180 videos afflicted with diverse stalling events. I also present my analysis of the temporal variations in the perceived QoE due to the time-varying video quality and present insights on the impact of relevant human cognitive aspects such as long-term and short-term memory and recency on quality perception. Next, I present a continuous-time objective QoE predicting model that effectively captures the complex interactions between the aforementioned human cognitive elements, spatial and temporal distortions, properties of stalling events, and models the state of any given client-side network buffer. I also show how the proposed framework can be extended by further supplementing with any number of additional inputs (or by eliminating any ineffective ones), based on the information available at the content providers during the design of adaptive stream-switching algorithms. This QoE predictor supports future research in the design of quality-aware stream-switching algorithms which could control the position, location, and length of stalls, given a network bandwidth budget and the end user's device information, such that the end user's QoE is maximized.Computer Science
Can small be beautiful? assessing image resolution requirements for mobile TV
Mobile TV services are now being offered in several countries, but for cost reasons, most of these services offer material directly recoded for mobile consumption (i.e. without additional editing). The experiment reported in this paper, aims to assess the image resolution and bitrate requirements for displaying this type of material on mobile devices. The study, with 128 participants, examined responses to four different image resolutions, seven video encoding bitrates, two audio bitrates and four content types. The results show that acceptability is significantly lower for images smaller than 168×126, regardless of content type. The effect is more pronounced when bandwidth is abundant, and is due to important detail being lost in the smaller screens. In contrast to previous studies, participants are more likely to rate image quality as unacceptable when the audio quality is high
