Professional writing : description of the writings of social workers in Botswana

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to identify the professional writing needs of undergraduate students studying social work in the University of Botswana. In order to do this, it seeks to analyse the types of texts produced by social workers in their professional setting, to find out what relationship exists between the writing done by professional social workers and the writing taught in the dedicated English Language Support unit at the University of Botswana, and to explore the similarities and differences between the documents written by the students and those produced by professional social workers. It also examines current approaches to teaching writing in the University, with the aim of identifying the writing needs of social work students and exploring how these can be effectively addressed

    Multiscale Partition of Unity

We introduce a new Partition of Unity Method for the numerical homogenization of elliptic partial differential equations with arbitrarily rough coefficients. We do not restrict to a particular ansatz space or the existence of a finite element mesh. The method modifies a given partition of unity such that optimal convergence is achieved independent of oscillation or discontinuities of the diffusion coefficient. The modification is based on an orthogonal decomposition of the solution space while preserving the partition of unity property. This precomputation involves the solution of independent problems on local subdomains of selectable size. We deduce quantitative error estimates for the method that account for the chosen amount of localization. Numerical experiments illustrate the high approximation properties even for 'cheap' parameter choices.Comment: Proceedings for Seventh International Workshop on Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations, 18 pages, 3 figure

    Unity of Superstring Dualities

The effective action for type II string theory compactified on a six torus is N=8N=8 supergravity, which is known to have an E7E_{7} duality symmetry. We show that this is broken by quantum effects to a discrete subgroup, E7(Z)E_7(\Z), which contains both the T-duality group SO(6,6;Z)SO(6,6;\Z) and the S-duality group SL(2;Z)SL(2;\Z). We present evidence for the conjecture that E7(Z)E_7(\Z) is an exact \lq U-duality' symmetry of type II string theory. This conjecture requires certain extreme black hole states to be identified with massive modes of the fundamental string. The gauge bosons from the Ramond-Ramond sector couple not to string excitations but to solitons. We discuss similar issues in the context of toroidal string compactifications to other dimensions, compactifications of the type II string on K3×T2K_3\times T^2 and compactifications of eleven-dimensional supermembrane theory.Comment: 45 pages. Unity of Supersymmetry Breaking Models

    Get PDF
We examine the models with gauge group U(1)^{k-1}\times\prod_{i=1}^k SU(n_i), which are obtained from decomposing the supersymmetry breaking model of Affleck, Dine and Seiberg containing an antisymmetric tensor field. We note that all of these models are distinct vacua of a single SU(N) gauge theory with an adjoint superfield. The dynamics of this model may be analyzed using the duality of Kutasov and Schwimmer and the deconfinement trick of Berkooz. This analysis leads to a simple picture for supersymmetry breaking for k=2, complementing that of previous work. We examine the flat directions of these models, and give straightforward criteria for lifting them, explaining the requisite peculiar form of the superpotential. For all cases with k>2, the duality argument fails to give supersymmetry breaking dynamics, and we identify a class of problematic flat directions, which we term 2m-baryons. We study in some detail the requirements for lifting these directions, and uncover some surprising facts regarding the relationship between R-symmetry and supersymmetry breaking in models with several gauge groups.Comment: harvmac, 40 page

Don\u27t Fall for the Lies Behind Trump\u27s Calls for Unity

Each summer, more than half a million tourists come to Gettysburg, a battlefield in the most divisive conflict in American history. After marching around in the heat, thousands stop in at Mr. G’s for some of the best ice cream in town. As they battle with their melting orange pineapple, they can look across the street to the new Unity Park and the newest of Gettysburg’s 1,300-plus monuments. Most commemorate battle; this one commemorates unity. It encourages a “focus on unity and peace.” (excerpt
