UAV-assisted emergency networks in disasters
Reliable and flexible emergency communication is a key challenge for search and rescue in the event of disasters, especially for the case when base stations (BSs) are no longer functioning. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted network is emerging as a promising method to establish emergency networks. In this article, a unified framework of UAV-assisted emergency network is established in disasters. First, the trajectory and scheduling of UAV are jointly optimized to provide wireless service to ground devices with surviving BSs. Then, the transceiver design of UAV and establishment of multi-hop ground device-to- device (D2D) communication are studied to extend the wireless coverage of UAV. In addition, multi-hop UAV relaying is added to realize information exchange between the disaster areas and outside through optimizing the hovering positions of UAVs. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of these three schemes. Finally, open research issues and challenges are discussed
Planning UAV Activities for Efficient User Coverage in Disaster Areas
Climate changes brought about by global warming as well as man-made
environmental changes are often the cause of sever natural disasters. ICT,
which is itself responsible for global warming due to its high carbon
footprint, can play a role in alleviating the consequences of such hazards by
providing reliable, resilient means of communication during a disaster crisis.
In this paper, we explore the provision of wireless coverage through UAVs
(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to complement, or replace, the traditional
communication infrastructure. The use of UAVs is indeed crucial in emergency
scenarios, as they allow for the quick and easy deployment of micro and pico
cellular base stations where needed. We characterize the movements of UAVs and
define an optimization problem to determine the best UAV coverage that
maximizes the user throughput, while maintaining fairness across the different
parts of the geographical area that has been affected by the disaster. To
evaluate our strategy, we simulate a flooding in San Francisco and the car
traffic resulting from people seeking safety on higher ground
UAV-Empowered Disaster-Resilient Edge Architecture for Delay-Sensitive Communication
The fifth-generation (5G) communication systems will enable enhanced mobile
broadband, ultra-reliable low latency, and massive connectivity services. The
broadband and low-latency services are indispensable to public safety (PS)
communication during natural or man-made disasters. Recently, the third
generation partnership project long term evolution (3GPPLTE) has emerged as a
promising candidate to enable broadband PS communications. In this article,
first we present six major PS-LTE enabling services and the current status of
PS-LTE in 3GPP releases. Then, we discuss the spectrum bands allocated for
PS-LTE in major countries by international telecommunication union (ITU).
Finally, we propose a disaster resilient three-layered architecture for PS-LTE
(DR-PSLTE). This architecture consists of a software-defined network (SDN)
layer to provide centralized control, an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) cloudlet
layer to facilitate edge computing or to enable emergency communication link,
and a radio access layer. The proposed architecture is flexible and combines
the benefits of SDNs and edge computing to efficiently meet the delay
requirements of various PS-LTE services. Numerical results verified that under
the proposed DR-PSLTE architecture, delay is reduced by 20% as compared with
the conventional centralized computing architecture.Comment: 9,
Transceiver design and multi-hop D2D for UAV IoT coverage in disasters
When natural disasters strike, the coverage for Internet of Things (IoT) may be severely destroyed, due to the damaged communications infrastructure. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be exploited as flying base stations to provide emergency coverage for IoT, due to its mobility and flexibility. In this paper, we propose multi-antenna transceiver design and multi-hop device-to-device (D2D) communication to guarantee the reliable transmission and extend the UAV coverage for IoT in disasters. Firstly, multi-hop D2D links are established to extend the coverage of UAV emergency networks due to the constrained transmit power of the UAV. In particular, a shortest-path-routing algorithm is proposed to establish the D2D links rapidly with minimum nodes. The closed-form solutions for the number of hops and the outage probability are derived for the uplink and downlink. Secondly, the transceiver designs for the UAV uplink and downlink are studied to optimize the performance of UAV transmission. Due to the non-convexity of the problem, they are first transformed into convex ones and then, low-complexity algorithms are proposed to solve them efficiently. Simulation results show the performance improvement in the throughput and outage probability by the proposed schemes for UAV wireless coverage of IoT in disasters
