A Novel Distributed Representation of News (DRNews) for Stock Market Predictions
In this study, a novel Distributed Representation of News (DRNews) model is
developed and applied in deep learning-based stock market predictions. With the
merit of integrating contextual information and cross-documental knowledge, the
DRNews model creates news vectors that describe both the semantic information
and potential linkages among news events through an attributed news network.
Two stock market prediction tasks, namely the short-term stock movement
prediction and stock crises early warning, are implemented in the framework of
the attention-based Long Short Term-Memory (LSTM) network. It is suggested that
DRNews substantially enhances the results of both tasks comparing with five
baselines of news embedding models. Further, the attention mechanism suggests
that short-term stock trend and stock market crises both receive influences
from daily news with the former demonstrates more critical responses on the
information related to the stock market {\em per se}, whilst the latter draws
more concerns on the banking sector and economic policies.Comment: 25 page
Intelligent Financial Fraud Detection Practices: An Investigation
Financial fraud is an issue with far reaching consequences in the finance
industry, government, corporate sectors, and for ordinary consumers. Increasing
dependence on new technologies such as cloud and mobile computing in recent
years has compounded the problem. Traditional methods of detection involve
extensive use of auditing, where a trained individual manually observes reports
or transactions in an attempt to discover fraudulent behaviour. This method is
not only time consuming, expensive and inaccurate, but in the age of big data
it is also impractical. Not surprisingly, financial institutions have turned to
automated processes using statistical and computational methods. This paper
presents a comprehensive investigation on financial fraud detection practices
using such data mining methods, with a particular focus on computational
intelligence-based techniques. Classification of the practices based on key
aspects such as detection algorithm used, fraud type investigated, and success
rate have been covered. Issues and challenges associated with the current
practices and potential future direction of research have also been identified.Comment: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Security and

Feature-based time-series analysis
This work presents an introduction to feature-based time-series analysis. The
time series as a data type is first described, along with an overview of the
interdisciplinary time-series analysis literature. I then summarize the range
of feature-based representations for time series that have been developed to
aid interpretable insights into time-series structure. Particular emphasis is
given to emerging research that facilitates wide comparison of feature-based
representations that allow us to understand the properties of a time-series
dataset that make it suited to a particular feature-based representation or
analysis algorithm. The future of time-series analysis is likely to embrace
approaches that exploit machine learning methods to partially automate human
learning to aid understanding of the complex dynamical patterns in the time
series we measure from the world.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figure
