    Online embedding of metrics

We study deterministic online embeddings of metrics spaces into normed spaces and into trees against an adaptive adversary. Main results include a polynomial lower bound on the (multiplicative) distortion of embedding into Euclidean spaces, a tight exponential upper bound on embedding into the line, and a (1+Ο΅)(1+\epsilon)-distortion embedding in β„“βˆž\ell_\infty of a suitably high dimension.Comment: 15 pages, no figure

    Non-Euclidean geometry in nature

I describe the manifestation of the non-Euclidean geometry in the behavior of collective observables of some complex physical systems. Specifically, I consider the formation of equilibrium shapes of plants and statistics of sparse random graphs. For these systems I discuss the following interlinked questions: (i) the optimal embedding of plants leaves in the three-dimensional space, (ii) the spectral statistics of sparse random matrix ensembles.Comment: 52 pages, 21 figures, last section is rewritten, a reference to chaotic Hamiltonian systems is adde

Tropical Geometry of Phylogenetic Tree Space: A Statistical Perspective

Phylogenetic trees are the fundamental mathematical representation of evolutionary processes in biology. As data objects, they are characterized by the challenges associated with "big data," as well as the complication that their discrete geometric structure results in a non-Euclidean phylogenetic tree space, which poses computational and statistical limitations. We propose and study a novel framework to study sets of phylogenetic trees based on tropical geometry. In particular, we focus on characterizing our framework for statistical analyses of evolutionary biological processes represented by phylogenetic trees. Our setting exhibits analytic, geometric, and topological properties that are desirable for theoretical studies in probability and statistics, as well as increased computational efficiency over the current state-of-the-art. We demonstrate our approach on seasonal influenza data.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
