Transparent ATM LAN Interconnection Over ISDN

    No full text
Narrowband Integrated Service Digital Networks (N-ISDNs) are emerging as key services for multimedia over public networks; at the same time ATM based hubs are starting to form backbones for providing multimedia services in customer premises networks (CPNs). In this context, there is a need to be able to interconnect CPNs not only by means of broadband services (ATM or SMDS), but also by means of N-ISDN (This is of course different from the dual, traditional problem of supporting N-ISDN connections over ATM). In this paper we address the requirement of transparent interconnection of ATM local area networks over public switched N-ISDN services [1] [2] [3] [4]. The method presented reduces the cost of using the ISDN service, while at the same time providing a high level of transparency to the end systems. It has the following features. -- ATM LAN attached systems are not aware of the fact that ISDN circuits may be used; from their point of view, ATM connections are carried end to end. -..
