Point-to-Multipoint Services on Fifth-Generation Mobile Networks
New Ràdio ni el nucli 5G.
pública i privada.
Convergence of Terrestrial and Mobile Networks.
and Splitting (ATSSS).
[EN] This dissertation covers the state-of-the-art in LTE eMBMS Release 14, also known as Enhanced Television Services (ENTV). ENTV provided a suite of radio and core enhancements that made eMBMS into a viable terrestrial broadcast standard. The latest iteration of this technology is known as LTE-based 5G Broadcast; even though it is not New Radio or 5G Core based. To bridge this gap, research efforts by academia, public and private enterprises evaluated how to provide a 5G-based solution for point-to-multipoint services. The most notable effort in this regard is the Horizon 2020 project 5G-Xcast, which ran from 2017 to 2019. 5G-Xcast provided several architectural solutions, from the content delivery perspective down to air interface specifics; providing new waveforms based on New Radio and Network Functions interoperable with a Release 15 5G Core. The findings are summarized in this thesis. Two examples of eMBMS applied to different verticals are included in the thesis, one for the use of eMBMS in industrial environments, and the other using eMBMS as a PWS technology.
Providing point-to-multipoint services as another cellular service poses some problems, as the standardization process of eMBMS showed: the broadcast infrastructure is different than the cellular one. Having a waveform that is suited for both scenarios is a difficult endeavour. The thesis provides a new perspective into this problem: Having existing Terrestrial Broadcast standards and infrastructure be the point-to-multipoint solution of 5G, where mobile operators and broadcasters collaborate together. This is defined in the dissertation as Convergence of Terrestrial and Mobile Networks. The technologies chosen to be converged together were ATSC 3.0 and 5G; using the existing Release 16 framework known as Advanced Traffic Steering, Switching and Splitting (ATSSS). ATSSS is a series of procedures, interfaces, new Network Functions, to allow the joint use of a 3GPP Access Network alongside a non-3GPP one, like Wi-Fi. However, the use of ATSSS for cellular plus broadcast brings challenges, as the ATSSS technology was not designed to be used with a unidirectional access network like ATSC 3.0. These limitations are described in detail, and an architectural proposal that overcomes the limitations is proposed. This solution is based on Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), and how to provide Convergent Services (i.e File Repair and Video Offloading) is shown.
The thesis concludes with a description of Release 17 5MBS, including the new concepts introduced. 5MBS features the capacity of switching between unicast, multicast and broadcast; depending on the service addressed, the geographical location of the users, and the capability of the RAN infrastructure targeted. In order to evaluate 5MBS, a performance study of the use of multicast inside the 5G Core has been carried out. The 5MBS prototype was developed as part of the VLC Campus 5G laboratory, using the commercial software Open5GCore which provides the libraries and Network Functions to deploy your own 5G Private Network in testing environments. The system model of the experiment is formed by a video server, connected to the Open5GCore and the 5MBS enhanced functions; which will deliver the content to an emulated RAN environment hosting virtual gNBs and devices. The results obtained reinforce the objective of the thesis, positioning point-to-multipoint as a scalable way to deliver live content.Research projects: 5G-Xcast: Broadcast and Multicast Communication Enablers for the

The design, simulation, and pattern synthesis of novel reflectarrays
The main focus of this thesis is on the development of both a comprehensive understanding and a thorough computational routine of the reflectarray metasurfaces designs, with focuses on a liquid crystal-based reconfigurable reflectarray metasurface and on the phase-retrieval/optimisation techniques for reflectarray-based pattern synthesis. A dielectric-based polarisation converting reflectarray metasurface is also presented, with the advantage of having a thinner profile over the traditional quartz-based half-wave plates.
In the introductory sections, a thorough review of the state-of-the-art metasurfaces is presented, with a focus on applications to high-frequency wireless communications, as the motivation of this PhD is on the development of technologies that would facilitate the wireless communication challenges for the 5G-and-beyond frequency spectrum. In this section, a review of array antennas, including phased arrays, reflectarrays, transmitarrays, as well as metasurfaces utilising Mie-resonance, plasmonic resonance, geometric phase (Pancharatnam-Berry phase) and photoconductive material is presented. The following chapter on the theoretical background ensures the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that will be applied to the study of reflectarray metasurfaces and optimisation routines.
The high-frequency propagation associated with beyond-5G wireless communications brings many challenges to the current standards: some of the biggest problems are the much greater path loss and heavy non-line-of-sight signal attenuation. Traditionally, this has been dealt with in phased arrays. However, in the introduction part of this thesis, I show that this becomes impractical due to the requirements of enormous array sizes and expensive high-frequency phase shifters. Therefore, in our research, we have focused on reconfigurable reflectarrays as an intermediate solution to alleviate the tough propagation challenges faced by beyond-5G wireless communications. The reconfigurable reflectarray can either be designed to reflect off from a nearby mobile cell site to enhance the signal strength for non-line-of-sight areas, or it can include an integrated source to function independently, reducing the losses associated with power amplifiers and complex circuitries associated with the enormous array sizes.
This thesis aims to produce a high-frequency tailored reconfigurable reflectarray design, which combines the conceptual advantages from state of-the-art lumped-element-based and liquid crystal-based reflectarrays. As shown in the literature review section, most recent researches on lumpedelement- based reconfigurable reflectarrays are designed for the sub 40 GHz frequencies; with higher frequencies, the intrinsic losses associated with lumped-elements such as PIN diodes make them unsuitable choices. On the other hand, liquid crystals have been used as a tunable material for different radio-frequency applications; however, most state-of-the-art designs of liquid crystal-based reflectarrays do not incorporate individual biasing control for maximum beam-control.
There are also challenges faced with individually-biased reconfigurable reflectarrays. Traditionally, phased arrays can perform single beam-scanning or multiple beam-scanning with the control of multiple sub-arrays. We intend to achieve more complex beam-functionalities (such as vortex, null, and magnitude-specific beams) within the domain of manipulating one individual array. This is already possible with optimisation algorithms such as the genetic algorithm. However, traditional optimisers such as the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimisation are far too slow to be implemented in an “online” mode, where the algorithm runs onboard the reflectarray to give low-latency solutions. The “online” optimisation mode would be very beneficial as it would reduce the channel occupation from the transmission of configuration information and thus increase channel capacity.
In this thesis, I aim to develop an individually biased liquid crystal-based reconfigurable reflectarray for >100 GHz frequencies. I also aim to develop an algorithm that is sufficiently quick to have the potential to be practically utilised as an onboard pattern synthesis optimisation method. Additionally, using the same design principles, I have designed an all-dielectric-based reflectarray metasurface that acts as a polarisation-converting quarter-wave plate, which is much thinner than traditional quartz-based quarter-wave plates.
In the Research Results and Publications chapter, a complete procedure for the design of LC-based reconfigurable and dielectric-based nonreconfigurable reflectarray metasurfaces is presented, where much of the content comes from the author’s own publications[52, 78, 50, 51]. This thesis provides details on the computational tools/programs used, cross-platform routines development with CST Studio Suite, MATLAB and VBA, and the pattern synthesis algorithm, whereby a genetic algorithm is employed for the global optimisation, and an improved Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm is developed and adapted to the application of faster local optimisation for the pattern synthesis. For the all-dielectric reflectarray metasurface, the further functionality of polarisation conversion (linear to circular and circular to linear) is demonstrated on top of the beam-manipulation capabilities of the reflectarrays. The reflectarray metasurfaces can be designed to beamform, beamsteer, beamsplit/multibeam, as well as achieve novel beam profiles such as the vortex profile.
Originally, the idea was to completely focus on the liquid crystal-based study and to develop a down-scaled 28 GHz proof-of-concept, for which partial work had already begun (the simulation, optimisation and initial planning on the construction with collaborators from other departments); however, due to the pandemic and numerous other uncontrollable factors, this was later discarded and replaced by remaining on and extending upon the computational studies, to further understand and improve the pattern synthesis algorithms and the other types of phase-change metasurfaces

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: A signal processing perspective with wireless applications
Antenna array technology enables the directional transmission and reception of wireless signals for communication, localization, and sensing purposes. The signal processing algorithms that underpin it began to be developed several decades ago [1], but it was with the deployment of 5G wireless mobile networks that the technology became mainstream [2]. The number of antenna elements in the arrays of 5G base stations (BSs) and user devices can be measured on the order of hundreds and tens, respectively. As networks shift toward using higher-frequency bands, more antennas fit into a given aperture. For communication purposes, the arrays are harnessed to form beams in desired directions to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and multiplex data signals in the spatial domain (to one or multiple devices) and to suppress interference by spatial filtering [2]. For localization purposes, these arrays are employed to maintain the SNR when operating across wider bandwidths, for angle-of-arrival estimation, and to separate multiple sources and scatterers [3]. The practical use of these features requires that each antenna array is equipped with well-designed signal processing algorithms

A comprehensive survey on hybrid communication in context of molecular communication and terahertz communication for body-centric nanonetworks
With the huge advancement of nanotechnology over the past years, the devices are shrinking into micro-scale, even nano-scale. Additionally, the Internet of nano-things (IoNTs) are generally regarded as the ultimate formation of the current sensor networks and the development of nanonetworks would be of great help to its fulfilment, which would be ubiquitous with numerous applications in all domains of life. However, the communication between the devices in such nanonetworks is still an open problem. Body-centric nanonetworks are believed to play an essential role in the practical application of IoNTs. BCNNs are also considered as domain specific like wireless sensor networks and always deployed on purpose to support a particular application. In these networks, electromagnetic and molecular communications are widely considered as two main promising paradigms and both follow their own development process. In this survey, the recent developments of these two paradigms are first illustrated in the aspects of applications, network structures, modulation techniques, coding techniques and security to then investigate the potential of hybrid communication paradigms. Meanwhile, the enabling technologies have been presented to apprehend the state-of-art with the discussion on the possibility of the hybrid technologies. Additionally, the inter-connectivity of electromagnetic and molecular body-centric nanonetworks is discussed. Afterwards, the related security issues of the proposed networks are discussed. Finally, the challenges and open research directions are presented
