Low current linearization of magnetic amplifier for dc transducer

    Get PDF
A magnetic amplifier having two saturable reactor cores with a separate excitation winding on each connected in series opposition, a common control winding, and a common output winding, is adapted for use as a low level signal transducer. The separate excitation windings are excited in push-pull mode through a center tapped transformer, and at least one diode is included in series with a load resistor connected to the output winding. A resistor in series with the output winding and load resistor is connected between the center tap of the excitation transformer and the connection between the two excitation windings of the saturable cores. This series resistor provides a return current path for the output winding and allows the excitation windings of the saturable cores to operate as primary windings of transformers

Design and operation of a protection system for transformers with superconducting windings

    Get PDF
Power transformers with superconducting windings need a protection system to prevent damage to the low-loss superconducting winding by an abnormally high current. The generally accepted protection technique which uses auxiliary coils has been analysed using a network representation. The current distribution between main and auxiliary coil is expressed in terms of geometrical parameters. Experimental data on current transfer and main coil recovery in a test transformer are presented and a method of obtaining a very low auxiliary coil current is suggested

Turn-to-turn fault protection technique for synchronous machines without additional voltage transformers

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel protection technique for the detection of inter-turn faults in synchronous machines. It is based on the calculation of voltage in the stator windings from the usual phases and neutral voltage, typically available in allgenerator protection relays. The existing turn-to-turn protection mechanisms require additional voltage transformers. The main contribution of this technique is that it can be implemented without using any additional voltage transformers. Thistechnique has been successfully tested in a special synchronous machine with taps in the stator windings, where turn-to-turn faults have been created

Technical and vocational skills (TVS): a means of preventing violence among youth in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Technical and vocational skills are an important tool for reducing violence among youth, especially in Nigeria, who face security challenges due to different kinds of violence. This paper focusses on the policies and programmes intended to provide youth with skills that can help them improve their life instead of engaging in violence. The paper also studies youth participation in violence. The study shows that youth in Nigeria participate in violence because of unemployment and economic pressure. These youth are mostly from poor families and are mostly used by others to achieve their own unlawful ambition. The data were collected from various secondary sources such as textbooks, journals and conference papers that were carefully reviewed. The results obtained from the literature revealed that youth are not committed, sensitised and mobilised to taking advantage of the opportunities available to them. The results also revealed that almost all the programmes meant to provide youths with skills have failed. Poverty alleviation programmes established to create jobs, self-employment and self-reliance have been unsuccessful. Therefore, alternatives must be provided to help the younger generations. Based on the literature reviewed, the paper discusses related issues and outcomes and ends with recommendations to improve the situation

    Non-contacting power transfer device

    Get PDF
A transformer for coupling AC electrical energy from a stationary element to a rotating element without the use of sliding contacts is described. The transformer is of the rotary type and includes a ferrite core and two primary windings which are stationary with respect to a seconary winding which rotates within an annular cavity adjacent an axial bore in the core. The core is comprised of two cup type core halves. Electrical connection to the secondary winding is made through a split bobbin assembly which couples to a coaxial shaft assembly located in the axial bore. The electrical coupling to the coaxial shaft assembly is made through a continuous transverse channel connecting the axial bore with the annular cavity. The transverse channel forms a single air gap; however, it is not open directly to free space but is shielded by the magnetic permeable material of the core halves
