    Training for preservation management

    In August 1997 the first of a series of summer schools in Preservation Management was held at the Archivschule in Marburg (Germany). The school was organised by the ECPA, the LIBER Division on Preservation, ICA and the Archivschule itself and was aimed at archivists and librarians in management positions from European institutions. It dealt with managerial, organisational and financial aspects of preservation and required active participation by those attending. Apart from introductory sessions by the teaching staff at the Archivschule, a large part of the course took the form of working groups, discussions, assignments and role play, to which participants were expected to take their own experience and problems. The school was conducted in German. Topics, spread over five days, ranged from preservation in the context of the core activities of libraries and archives; planning of preservation projects; general management issues, such as resource management, budgeting, priority setting, communication and effecting change; to more detailed considerations of day-to-day issues, such as storage, disaster control, microfilming and digitising, mass conservation processes, and moulds and fungi

    This paper describes four agribusiness simulators which can be processed on a microcomputer for use in undergraduate and extension teaching. The simulators model the environment in which supermarket chains, farm supply centers, and cooperative and proprietary grain elevators compete for business. Instruction manuals, user's manuals, and a diskette are distributed for each simulator. Each diskette contains programs to enter and edit team decisions, to process decisions and print reports, and to create graphs of team performance.     A quality training program for sales persons will optimize sales persons’ performance through several variables, which are the competence of sales persons and the quality of distribution territory management. The problem of this research is how does the improvement of sales persons’ competence affecting the improvement of seller territory management quality is able to fill the gap between sales persons’ training program and sales persons’ performance. The samples were 166 respondents who are sales persons and have followed training program from various pharmaceutical distributor companies in Central Java. In addition, data was analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) of AMOS 23 program. To improving the performance of sales persons, their competence is significantly affected by sales persons training program, and the quality of distribution territory management is also significantly affected by sales persons' competence, while the performance of sales persons is significantly affected by the quality of distribution territory management. Meanwhile, the competence of sales persons provides neither major nor significant effect on the performance of sales persons

    Financial Literacy: The Impact of Financial Training in High School on the Credit Behavior of College Students

    Managing credit is increasingly important not only for adults, but for college students. In recent years with sky rocketing tuition and easily available credit, college students find themselves with increasing debt burdens that result in serious and lasting financial problems. In response, financial literacy programs are emerging in hopes that better educated people will make healthy financial decisions, as well as responsibly manage credit. Research suggests that financial education should begin in high school so that young adults can effectively manage credit during the college years. This study assesses both college students’ financial knowledge and their credit management practices. Specifically, it examines whether Bryant University students retain and use the financial training from high school when making financial decisions and managing credit. The findings from this study illustrate that almost 75% of the 345 students that manage their own credit in college received financial training in high school and that although this training is negatively correlated with poor credit management behavior in college, the association is weak. This study further suggests that even with additional financial literacy training available in college, almost 60% of these students demonstrate poor credit management behavior. As a result, this study suggests that young people need to improve their credit management skills by setting budgets and employing good credit management techniques

    This report is the second in a series of briefs on a 2003 survey of volunteer management capacity among public charities in the United States. It focuses on charities' adoption of nine volunteer management practices: supervision and communication, liability coverage, screening and matching, regular collection of volunteer numbers and hours written policies and job descriptions, recognition activities, measurement of volunteer impacts, training and professional development, and training for paid staff in working with volunteers. We report on the extent of adoption of these practices by charities with different characteristics, and the relationship between volunteer management practices and retention of volunteers

    The Wallace Foundation's four-year Strengthening Financial Management in Out-of-School Time initiative(SFM) was designed to improve the financial management systems of 26 well-respected Chicago nonprofits that provide out-of-school-time (OST) services. SFM grew out of the Foundation's longstanding commitment to improving the quality of services for youth during nonschool hours and the realization that even successful nonprofits face financial management challenges that have an impact on their ability to achieve their missions. To address these challenges, the initiative is working to reform public and private funding practices that strain OST organizations' financial management capacity and providing participating organizations with financial management training and peer networking opportunities (using one of two models that vary in intensity and in the balance of individual vs. group-based training and support)
