Accelerating Stochastic Random Projection Neural Networks

    Get PDF
Artificial Neural Network (ANN), a computational model based on the biological neural networks, has a recent resurgence in machine intelligence with breakthrough results in pattern recognition, speech recognition, and mapping. This has led to a growing interest in designing dedicated hardware substrates for ANNs with a goal of achieving energy efficiency, high network connectivity and better computational capabilities that are typically not optimized in software ANN stack. Using stochastic computing is a natural choice to reduce the total system energy, where a signal is expressed through the statistical distribution of the logical values as a random bit stream. Generally, the accuracy of these systems is correlated with the stochastic bit stream length and requires long compute times. In this work, a framework is proposed to accelerate the long compute times in stochastic ANNs. A GPU acceleration framework has been developed to validate two random projection networks to test the efficacy of these networks prior to custom hardware design. The networks are stochastic extreme learning machine, a supervised feed-forward neural network and stochastic echo state network, a recurrent neural network with online learning. The framework also provisions identifying optimal values for various network parameters like learning rate, number of hidden layers and stochastic number length. The proposed stochastic extreme learning machine design is validated for two standardized datasets, MNIST dataset and orthopedic dataset. The proposed stochastic echo state network is validated on the time series EEG dataset. The CPU models were developed for each of these networks to calculate the relative performance boost. The design knobs for performance boost include stochastic bit stream generation, activation function, reservoir layer and training unit of the networks. Proposed stochastic extreme learning machine and stochastic echo state network achieved a performance boost of 60.61x for Orthopedic dataset and 42.03x for EEG dataset with 2^12 bit stream length when tested on an Nvidia GeForce1050 Ti

Note Taking in the Digital Age – Towards a Ubiquitous Pen Interface

    Get PDF
The cultural technique of writing helped humans to express, communicate, think, and memorize throughout history. With the advent of human-computer-interfaces, pens as command input for digital systems became popular. While current applications allow carrying out complex tasks with digital pens, they lack the ubiquity and directness of pen and paper. This dissertation models the note taking process in the context of scholarly work, motivated by an understanding of note taking that surpasses mere storage of knowledge. The results, together with qualitative empirical findings about contemporary scholarly workflows that alternate between the analog and the digital world, inspire a novel pen interface concept. This concept proposes the use of an ordinary pen and unmodified writing surfaces for interacting with digital systems. A technological investigation into how a camera-based system can connect physical ink strokes with digital handwriting processing delivers artificial neural network-based building blocks towards that goal. Using these components, the technological feasibility of in-air pen gestures for command input is explored. A proof-of-concept implementation of a prototype system reaches real-time performance and demonstrates distributed computing strategies for realizing the interface concept in an end-user setting

Air Conditioners (ACs) are a vital need in modern buildings to provide comfortable indoor air for the occupants. Several alternatives for the traditional coolers are introduced to improve the cooling efficiency but among them, Evaporative Coolers (ECs) absorbed more attention owing to their intelligible structure and high efficiency. ECs are categorized into two types, i.e., Direct Evaporative Coolers (DECs) and Indirect Evaporative Coolers (IECs). Continuous endeavours in the improvement of the ECs resulted in development of Dew Point Coolers (DPCs) which enable the supply air to reach the dew point temperature. The main innovation of DPCs relies on invention of a M-cycle Heat and Mass Exchanger (HMX) which contributes towards improvement of the ECs’ efficiency by up to 30%. A state-of-the-art counter flow DPC in which the flat plates in traditional HMXs are replaced by the corrugated plates is called Guideless Irregular DPC (GIDPC). This technology has 30-60% more cooling efficiency compared to the flat plate HMX in traditional DPCs.Owing to the empirical success of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in different fields and enhanced importance of Machine Learning (ML) models, this study pioneers in developing two ML models using Multiple Polynomial Regression (MPR), and Deep Neural Network (DNN) methods, and three Multi Objective Evolutionary Optimisation (MOEO) models using Genetic Algorithms (GA), Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO), and a novel bio-inspired algorithm, i.e., Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), for the performance prediction and optimisation of the GIDPC in all possible operating climates. Furthermore, this study pioneers in developing an explainable and interpretable DNN model for the GIDPC. To this end, a game theory-based SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method is used to interpret contribution of the operating conditions on performance parameters. The ML models, take the intake air characteristic as well as main operating and design parameters of the HMX as inputs of the ML models to predict the GIDPC’s performance parameters, e.g., cooling capacity, coefficient of performance (COP), thermal efficiencies. The results revealed that both models have high prediction accuracies where MPR performs with a maximum average error of 1.22%. In addition, the Mean Square Error (MSE) of the selected DNN model is only 0.04. The objectives of the MOEO models are to simultaneously maximise the cooling efficiency and minimise the construction cost of the GIDPC by determining the optimum values of the selected decision variables. The performance of the optimised GIDPCs is compared in a deterministic way in which the comparisons are carried out in diverse climates in 2020 and 2050 in which the hourly future weather data are projected using a high-emission scenario defined by Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). The results revealed that the hourly COP of the optimised systems outperforms the base design. Moreover, although power consumption of all systems increases from 2020 to 2050, owing to more operating hours as a result of global warming, but power savings of up to 72%, 69.49%, 63.24%, and 69.21% in hot summer continental, arid, tropical rainforest and Mediterranean hot summer climates respectively, can be achieved compared to the base system when the systems run optimally

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that applies numerous techniques, such as machine learning, neural networks, and deep learning, to create value based on extracting knowledge and insights from available data. Advances in data science have a significant impact on healthcare. While advances in the sharing of medical information result in better and earlier diagnoses as well as more patient-tailored treatments, information management is also affected by trends such as increased patient centricity (with shared decision making), self-care (e.g., using wearables), and integrated care delivery. The delivery of health services is being revolutionized through the sharing and integration of health data across organizational boundaries. Via data science, researchers can deliver new approaches to merge, analyze, and process complex data and gain more actionable insights, understanding, and knowledge at the individual and population levels. This Special Issue focuses on how data science is used in healthcare (e.g., through predictive modeling) and on related topics, such as data sharing and data management
