Color and texture associations in voice-induced synesthesia
Voice-induced synesthesia, a form of synesthesia in which synesthetic perceptions are induced by the sounds of people's voices, appears to be relatively rare and has not been systematically studied. In this study we investigated the synesthetic color and visual texture perceptions experienced in response to different types of âvoice qualityâ (e.g., nasal, whisper, falsetto). Experiences of three different groupsâself-reported voice synesthetes, phoneticians, and controlsâwere compared using both qualitative and quantitative analysis in a study conducted online. Whilst, in the qualitative analysis, synesthetes used more color and texture terms to describe voices than either phoneticians or controls, only weak differences, and many similarities, between groups were found in the quantitative analysis. Notable consistent results between groups were the matching of higher speech fundamental frequencies with lighter and redder colors, the matching of âwhisperyâ voices with smoke-like textures, and the matching of âharshâ and âcreakyâ voices with textures resembling dry cracked soil. These data are discussed in the light of current thinking about definitions and categorizations of synesthesia, especially in cases where individuals apparently have a range of different synesthetic inducers
Initiating organizational memories using ontology network analysis
One of the important problems in organizational memories is their initial set-up. It is difficult to choose the right information to include in an organizational memory, and the right information is also a prerequisite for maximizing the uptake and relevance of the memory content. To tackle this problem, most developers adopt heavy-weight solutions and rely on a faithful continuous interaction with users to create and improve its content. In this paper, we explore the use of an automatic, light-weight solution, drawn from the underlying ingredients of an organizational memory: ontologies. We have developed an ontology-based network analysis method which we applied to tackle the problem of identifying communities of practice in an organization. We use ontology-based network analysis as a means to provide content automatically for the initial set up of an organizational memory
Co-word maps of biotechnology: an example of cognitive scientometrics
To analyse developments of scientific fields, scientometrics provides useful tools, provided one is prepared to take the content of scientific articles into account. Such cognitive scientometrics is illustrated by using as data a ten-year period of articles from a biotechnology core journal. After coding with key-words, the relations between articles are brought out by co-word analysis. Maps of the field are given, showing connections between areas and their change over time, and with respect to the institutions in which research is performed. In addition, other approaches are explored, including an indicator of lsquotheoretical levelrsquo of bodies of articles
An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.
This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.
Autofocus for digital Fresnel holograms by use of a Fresnelet-sparsity criterion
We propose a robust autofocus method for reconstructing digital Fresnel holograms. The numerical reconstruction
involves simulating the propagation of a complex wave front to the appropriate distance. Since the latter value is difficult to determine manually, it is desirable to rely on an automatic procedure for finding the optimal distance to achieve high-quality reconstructions. Our algorithm maximizes a sharpness metric related to the sparsity of the signalâs expansion in distance-dependent waveletlike Fresnelet bases. We show results from simulations and experimental situations that confirm its applicability
3D Velocity and Density Reconstructions of the Local Universe with Cosmicflows-1
This paper presents an analysis of the local peculiar velocity field based on
the Wiener Filter reconstruction method. We used our currently available
catalog of distance measurements containing 1,797 galaxies within 3000 km/s:
Cosmicflows-1. The Wiener Filter method is used to recover the full 3D peculiar
velocity field from the observed map of radial velocities and to recover the
underlying linear density field. The velocity field within a data zone of 3000
km/s is decomposed into a local component that is generated within the data
zone and a tidal one that is generated by the mass distribution outside that
zone. The tidal component is characterized by a coherent flow toward the
Norma-Hydra-Centaurus (Great Attractor) region while the local component is
dominated by a flow toward the Virgo Cluster and away from the Local Void. A
detailed analysis shows that the local flow is predominantly governed by the
Local Void and the Virgo Cluster plays a lesser role. The analysis procedure
was tested against a mock catalog. It is demonstrated that the Wiener Filter
accurately recovers the input velocity field of the mock catalog on the scale
of the extraction of distances and reasonably recovers the velocity field on
significantly larger scales. The Bayesian Wiener Filter reconstruction is
carried out within the ?CDM WMAP5 framework. The Wiener Filter reconstruction
draws particular attention to the importance of voids in proximity to our
neighborhood. The prominent structure of the Local Supercluster is wrapped in a
horseshoe collar of under density with the Local Void as a major component.Comment: Accepted for ApJ, August 6, 201
Simon S. Kuznets: April 30, 1901-July 9, 1985
This paper, prepared for the Biographical Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, presents an account of the scholarly career of Simon S. Kuznets. Among the issues considered are his contribution to the development of the empirical tradition in economics, his transformation of the field of national income accounting, his use of national income accounting during World War II to set production targets for both the military and civilian sectors of the economy, and to guide the implementation of those targets; his development of a theory of economic growth, his investigation of the interrelationship between economic growth and population growth, his contribution to methods of measurement in economics, and his legacy to the economics profession.
