In recent years, information integration systems have become very popular in mashup-type applications. Information sources are normally presented in an individual and unrelated fashion, and the development of new technologies to reduce the negative effects of information dispersion is needed. A major challenge is the integration and implementation of processing pipelines using different technologies promoting the emergence of advanced architectures capable of processing such a number of diverse sources. This paper describes a semantic domain-adaptable platform to integrate those sources and provide high-level functionalities, such as recommendations, shallow and deep natural language processing, text enrichment, and ontology standardization. Our proposed intelligent domain-adaptable platform (IDAP) has been implemented and tested in the tourism and biomedicine domains to demonstrate the adaptability, flexibility, modularity, and utility of the platform. Questionnaires, performance metrics, and A/B control groups’ evaluations have shown improvements when using IDAP in learning environmentspost-print2139 K

Social Media Platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter, are part of everyday life as powerful communication tools. They let users communicate anywhere-anytime, improve their own public image and readily share information. For this reason, a growing number of individuals such as professionals as well as companies have opened an account in one or more Social Media platforms. Due to the widespread use and growing numbers of users, a huge amount of data is generated every day. This information may play a crucial role in various decision-making processes. In this setting, research topics connected to monitoring and analysis of Social Media data are becoming increasingly important. The present work stems from data collection methodologies from different Social Media sources. It introduces the problems involved in storing semi-structured data, and in possible information gaps due to privacy policies. These facets are described according to the application domain as well as the Social Media platform. Subsequently, a theoretical generic architecture for handling data from Social Media sources is presented. We present three simplified versions of this architecture in three different domains: Online Reputation, Social Media Intelligence, and Opinion Mining in tourism. In the last part of the work, we introduce Social Media Analysis in these three domains. For the first, we present the project SocialTrends, a web application able to monitor “public” people on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. In the second, we introduce an innovative approach for measuring the interactions between users in public spaces such as Facebook (public-by-design). Finally, we present Tour-pedia, a web application that displays a sentiment map of tourist locations in several cities according to different categories (accommodation, restaurants, points of interest and attractions)

This thesis proposes several advanced methods to automatically analyse textual content shared on social networks and identify people’ opinions, emotions and feelings at a different level of analysis and in different languages. We start by proposing a sentiment analysis system, called SentiRich, based on a set of rich features, including the information extracted from sentiment lexicons and pre-trained word embedding models. Then, we propose an ensemble system based on Convolutional Neural Networks and XGboost regressors to solve an array of sentiment and emotion analysis tasks on Twitter. These tasks range from the typical sentiment analysis tasks, to automatically determining the intensity of an emotion (such as joy, fear, anger, etc.) and the intensity of sentiment (aka valence) of the authors from their tweets. We also propose a novel Deep Learning-based system to address the multiple emotion classification problem on Twitter. Moreover, we considered the problem of target-dependent sentiment analysis. For this purpose, we propose a Deep Learning-based system that identifies and extracts the target of the tweets. While some languages, such as English, have a vast array of resources to enable sentiment analysis, most low-resource languages lack them. So, we utilise the Cross-lingual Sentiment Analysis technique to develop a novel, multi-lingual and Deep Learning-based system for low resource languages. We propose to combine Multi-Criteria Decision Aid and sentiment analysis to develop a system that gives users the ability to exploit reviews alongside their preferences in the process of alternatives ranking. Finally, we applied the developed systems to the field of communication of destination brands through social networks. To this end, we collected tweets of local people, visitors, and official brand destination offices from different tourist destinations and analysed the opinions and the emotions shared in these tweets

Abstract The main technical issues regarding smart city solutions are related to data gathering, aggregation, reasoning, data analytics, access, and service delivering via Smart City APIs (Application Program Interfaces). Different kinds of Smart City APIs enable smart city services and applications, while their effectiveness depends on the architectural solutions to pass from data to services for city users and operators, exploiting data analytics, and presenting services via APIs. Therefore, there is a strong activity on defining smart city architectures to cope with this complexity, putting in place a significant range of different kinds of services and processes. In this paper, the work performed in the context of Sii-Mobility smart city project on defining a smart city architecture addressing a wide range of processes and data is presented. To this end, comparisons of the state of the art solutions of smart city architectures for data aggregation and for Smart City API are presented by putting in evidence the usage semantic ontologies and knowledge base in the data aggregation in the production of smart services. The solution proposed aggregate and re-conciliate data (open and private, static and real time) by using reasoning/smart algorithms for enabling sophisticated service delivering via Smart City API. The work presented has been developed in the context of the Sii-Mobility national smart city project on mobility and transport integrated with smart city services with the aim of reaching a more sustainable mobility and transport systems. Sii-Mobility is grounded on Km4City ontology and tools for smart city data aggregation, analytics support and service production exploiting smart city API. To this end, Sii-Mobility/Km4City APIs have been compared to the state of the art solutions. Moreover, the proposed architecture has been assessed in terms of performance, computational and network costs in terms of measures that can be easily performed on private cloud on premise. The computational costs and workloads of the data ingestion and data analytics processes have been assessed to identify suitable measures to estimate needed resources. Finally, the API consumption related data in the recent period are presented

In recent years, recommender systems have become ubiquitous on the web. This has increased research focused on improving tourism recommender systems and solving the main issues they face. This thesis proposes new algorithms for tourism recommender systems that learn tourist preferences from their social media data to suggest a sequence of touristic activities that align with various contexts and include affine activities. To accomplish this, we propose methods for identifying tourists from their frequent Twitter posts, identifying the activities experienced in these posts, and profiling similar tourists based on their interests, contextual information, and activity periods. User profiles are then combined with an association rule mining algorithm for capturing implicit relationships between points of interest apparent in each profile. Finally, a rule ranking and activity selection process produces a set of recommendable activities. The recommendations were evaluated for accuracy and the effect of user profiling. We further order the set of activities using a multi-objective algorithm to enrich the tourist experience. We also carry out a second-stage analysis of tourist flows at destinations which is beneficial to destination management organisations seeking to understand tourist mobility. Overall, the methods and algorithms proposed in this thesis are shown to be useful in various aspects of tourism recommender systems

Word-of-mouth (WOM) is emerging in importance for brand reputation and understanding of consumer behavior. Motivations to engage in WOM has been largely studied in marketing literature. How companies respond to WOM online was accounted in marketing literature to deliver distinguishing managerial response strategies to brands. This research project focuses on identifying which response strategy is the most crucial to make customers satisfied after a negative WOM. Text mining and sentiment analysis were used in order to draw conclusions from actual online consumer behavior. Negative WOM (NWOM) was extracted from different brand pages on Facebook, as well as the responses from the companies to these NWOM and the reaction from the NWOM’s writer to the brand’s response. A literature-based framework using Davidow's Facilitation, Apology and Attentiveness, and Benoit's Corrective Action was tested on the data. Further moderation analysis was conducted to test effects of NWOM’s polarity and industry on the relationship between the responses and satisfaction. Results reveal that Facilitation is important to response satisfaction. Whenever brands re-directed original NWOM writers to formal complaint means, their satisfaction increased. This was especially true for hospitality and e-commerce industries. Reversely, for hospitality and e-commerce industries, Apology had a negative impact on response satisfaction. Results yielded that Attentiveness decreased response satisfaction when polarity was a moderator. Managers should provide effective means for consumers to voice their disappointment and not rely on apologies alone. Future research should tackle more in depth the intricacies of languages and the distinction of complainers and brand haters on response strategies.O word-of-mouth (WOM) está a crescer em importância no ramo da reputação da marca e a compreensão do comportamento do consumidor.

A review of the role of sensors in mobile context-aware recommendation systems

Recommendation systems are specialized in offering suggestions about specific items of different types (e.g., books, movies, restaurants, and hotels) that could be interesting for the user. They have attracted considerable research attention due to their benefits and also their commercial interest. Particularly, in recent years, the concept of context-aware recommendation system has appeared to emphasize the importance of considering the context of the situations in which the user is involved in order to provide more accurate recommendations. The detection of the context requires the use of sensors of different types, which measure different context variables. Despite the relevant role played by sensors in the development of context-aware recommendation systems, sensors and recommendation approaches are two fields usually studied independently. In this paper, we provide a survey on the use of sensors for recommendation systems. Our contribution can be seen from a double perspective. On the one hand, we overview existing techniques used to detect context factors that could be relevant for recommendation. On the other hand, we illustrate the interest of sensors by considering different recommendation use cases and scenarios
