    In-process tool condition forecasting based on a deep learning method

    It is widely acknowledged that machining precision and surface integrity are greatly affected by cutting tool conditions. In order to enable early cutting tool replacement and proactive actions, tool wear conditions should be estimated in advance and updated in real-time. In this work, an approach to in-process tool condition forecasting is proposed based on a deep learning method. A long short-term memory network is designed to forecast multiple flank wear values based on historical data. A residual convolutional neural network is built to enable in-process tool condition monitoring, using raw signals acquired during the machining process. The integration of them enables in-process tool condition forecasting. Median-based correction and mean-based correction are adopted to improve the accuracy. IEEE PHM 2010 challenge data has been used to illustrate and validate this approach. Experimental study and quantitative comparisons showed that future flank wear values could be precisely forecasted during the machining process. The proposed approach contributes to prompt and reliable cutting tool condition forecasting, which will support the decision-making about cutting tool replacement in data-driven smart manufacturing

    Hybrid ABC optimized MARS-based modeling of the milling tool wear from milling run experimental data

    Milling cutters are important cutting tools used in milling machines to perform milling operations, which are prone to wear and subsequent failure. In this paper, a practical new hybrid model to predict the milling tool wear in a regular cut, as well as entry cut and exit cut, of a milling tool is proposed. The model was based on the optimization tool termed artificial bee colony (ABC) in combination with multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) technique. This optimization mechanism involved the parameter setting in the MARS training procedure, which significantly influences the regression accuracy. Therefore, an ABC–MARS-based model was successfully used here to predict the milling tool flank wear (output variable) as a function of the following input variables: the time duration of experiment, depth of cut, feed, type of material, etc. Regression with optimal hyperparameters was performed and a determination coefficient of 0.94 was obtained. The ABC–MARS-based model's goodness of fit to experimental data confirmed the good performance of this model. This new model also allowed us to ascertain the most influential parameters on the milling tool flank wear with a view to proposing milling machine's improvements.     State estimators in soft sensing and sensor fusion for sustainable manufacturing

    State estimators, including observers and Bayesian filters, are a class of model-based algorithms for estimating variables in a dynamical system given sensor measurements of related system states. They can be used to derive fast and accurate estimates of system variables which cannot be measured directly (’soft sensing’) or for which only noisy, intermittent, delayed, indirect or unreliable measurements are available, perhaps from multiple sources (’sensor fusion’). In this paper we introduce the concepts and main methods of state estimation and review recent applications in improving the sustainability of manufacturing processes. It is shown that state estimation algorithms can play a key role in manufacturing systems to accurately monitor and control processes to improve efficiencies, lower environmental impact, enhance product quality, improve the feasibility of processing more sustainable raw materials, and ensure safer working environments for humans. We discuss current and emerging trends in using state estimation as a framework for combining physical knowledge with other sources of data for monitoring and control of distributed manufacturing systems
