The design co-ordination framework : key elements for effective product development
This paper proposes a Design Co-ordination Framework (DCF) i.e. a concept for an ideal DC system with the abilities to support co-ordination of various complex aspects of product development. A set of frames, modelling key elements of co-ordination, which reflect the states of design, plans, organisation, allocations, tasks etc. during the design process, has been identified. Each frame is explained and the co-ordination, i.e. the management of the links between these frames, is presented, based upon characteristic DC situations in industry. It is concluded that while the DCF provides a basis for our research efforts into enhancing the product development process there is still considerable work and development required before it can adequately reflect and support Design Co-ordination
Learning Design and Service Oriented Architectures:a mutual dependency?
This paper looks at how the concept of reusability has gained currency in e-learning. Initial attention was focused on reuse of content, but recently attention has focused on reusable software tools and reusable activity structures. The former has led to the proposal of service-oriented architectures, and the latter has seen the development of the Learning Design specification. The authors suggest that there is a mutual dependency between the success of these two approaches, as complex Learning Designs require the ability to call on a range of tools, while remaining technology neutral.
The paper describes a project at the UK Open University, SLeD, which sought to develop a Learning Design player that would utilise the service-oriented approach. This acted both as a means of exploring some of the issues implicit within both approaches and also provided a practical tool. The SLeD system was successfully implemented in a different university, Liverpool Hope, demonstrating some of the principles of re-use
Software Infrastructure for Natural Language Processing
We classify and review current approaches to software infrastructure for
research, development and delivery of NLP systems. The task is motivated by a
discussion of current trends in the field of NLP and Language Engineering. We
describe a system called GATE (a General Architecture for Text Engineering)
that provides a software infrastructure on top of which heterogeneous NLP
processing modules may be evaluated and refined individually, or may be
combined into larger application systems. GATE aims to support both researchers
and developers working on component technologies (e.g. parsing, tagging,
morphological analysis) and those working on developing end-user applications
(e.g. information extraction, text summarisation, document generation, machine
translation, and second language learning). GATE promotes reuse of component
technology, permits specialisation and collaboration in large-scale projects,
and allows for the comparison and evaluation of alternative technologies. The

Enterprise application reuse: Semantic discovery of business grid services
Web services have emerged as a prominent paradigm for the development of distributed software systems as they provide the potential for software to be modularized in a way that functionality can be described, discovered and deployed in a platform independent manner over a network (e.g., intranets, extranets and the Internet). This paper examines an extension of this paradigm to encompass āGrid Servicesā, which enables software capabilities to be recast with an operational focus and support a heterogeneous mix of business software and data, termed a Business Grid - "the grid of semantic services". The current industrial representation of services is predominantly syntactic however, lacking the fundamental semantic underpinnings required to fulfill the goals of any semantically-oriented Grid. Consequently, the use of semantic technology in support of business software heterogeneity is investigated as a likely tool to support a diverse and distributed software inventory and user. Service discovery architecture is therefore developed that is (a) distributed in form, (2) supports distributed service knowledge and (3) automatically extends service knowledge (as greater descriptive precision is inferred from the operating application system). This discovery engine is used to execute several real-word scenarios in order to develop and test a framework for engineering such grid service knowledge. Study of Tools Interoperability
Interoperability of tools usually refers to a combination of methods and techniques that address the problem of making a collection of tools to work together. In this study we survey different notions that are used in this context: interoperability, interaction and integration. We point out relation between these notions, and how it maps to the interoperability problem.
We narrow the problem area to the tools development in academia. Tools developed in such environment have a small basis for development, documentation and maintenance. We scrutinise some of the problems and potential solutions related with tools interoperability in such environment. Moreover, we look at two tools developed in the Formal Methods and Tools group1, and analyse the use of different integration techniques

The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL): Use Cases, Syntax, and Extensibility
The Distributed Ontology Language (DOL) is currently being standardized
within the OntoIOp (Ontology Integration and Interoperability) activity of
ISO/TC 37/SC 3. It aims at providing a unified framework for (1) ontologies
formalized in heterogeneous logics, (2) modular ontologies, (3) links between
ontologies, and (4) annotation of ontologies. This paper presents the current
state of DOL's standardization. It focuses on use cases where distributed
ontologies enable interoperability and reusability. We demonstrate relevant
features of the DOL syntax and semantics and explain how these integrate into
