A guided tour of asynchronous cellular automata
Research on asynchronous cellular automata has received a great amount of
attention these last years and has turned to a thriving field. We survey the
recent research that has been carried out on this topic and present a wide
state of the art where computing and modelling issues are both represented.Comment: To appear in the Journal of Cellular Automat
Pictures of complete positivity in arbitrary dimension
Two fundamental contributions to categorical quantum mechanics are presented.
First, we generalize the CP-construction, that turns any dagger compact
category into one with completely positive maps, to arbitrary dimension.
Second, we axiomatize when a given category is the result of this construction.Comment: Final versio
On shuffle products, acyclic automata and piecewise-testable languages
We show that the shuffle L \unicode{x29E2} F of a piecewise-testable
language and a finite language is piecewise-testable. The proof relies
on a classic but little-used automata-theoretic characterization of
piecewise-testable languages. We also discuss some mild generalizations of the
main result, and provide bounds on the piecewise complexity of L

Empirical Analysis of the Necessary and Sufficient Conditions of the Echo State Property
The Echo State Network (ESN) is a specific recurrent network, which has
gained popularity during the last years. The model has a recurrent network
named reservoir, that is fixed during the learning process. The reservoir is
used for transforming the input space in a larger space. A fundamental property
that provokes an impact on the model accuracy is the Echo State Property (ESP).
There are two main theoretical results related to the ESP. First, a sufficient
condition for the ESP existence that involves the singular values of the
reservoir matrix. Second, a necessary condition for the ESP. The ESP can be
violated according to the spectral radius value of the reservoir matrix. There
is a theoretical gap between these necessary and sufficient conditions. This
article presents an empirical analysis of the accuracy and the projections of
reservoirs that satisfy this theoretical gap. It gives some insights about the
generation of the reservoir matrix. From previous works, it is already known
that the optimal accuracy is obtained near to the border of stability control
of the dynamics. Then, according to our empirical results, we can see that this
border seems to be closer to the sufficient conditions than to the necessary
conditions of the ESP.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted paper for the IEEE IJCNN, 201
Differences in intention to use educational RSS feeds between Lebanese and British students: A multi‑group analysis based on the technology acceptance model
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) offers a means for university students to receive timely updates from virtual learning environments. However, despite its utility, only 21% of home students surveyed at a university in Lebanon claim to have ever used the technology. To investigate whether national culture could be an influence on intention to use RSS, the survey was extended to British students in the UK. Using the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) as a research framework, 437 students responded to a questionnaire containing four constructs: behavioral intention to use; attitude towards benefit; perceived usefulness; and perceived ease of use. Principle components analysis and structural equation modelling were used to explore the psychometric qualities and utility of TAM in both contexts. The results show that adoption was significantly higher, but also modest, in the British context at 36%. Configural and metric invariance were fully supported, while scalar and factorial invariance were partially supported. Further analysis shows significant differences between perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use across the two contexts studied. Therefore, it is recommended that faculty demonstrate to students how educational RSS feeds can be used effectively to increase awareness and emphasize usefulness in both contexts
