The Secret Garden

When young Mary Lennox loses her parents to a cholera outbreak in India, she is sent to live with her uncle, hermit Archibald Craven, who lives in an imposing, secluded manor on the British heath. Inside the haunting house upon the hill, Mary finds a reclusive, long-suffering collection of souls. The playbill for Taylor University’s Fall 2009 performance of The Secret Garden based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett with script and lyrics by Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon. The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young English girl from British Raj who is sent to live in Yorkshire, England with her relatives after her parents die in a cholera outbreak. Based on Pythagorean Cosmology, the thesis gives new interpretations of the image of garden in The Secret Garden from the perspective of time and space respectively. Garden, conveying profound meanings and combining macrocosmos and microcosmos, is one of the most important means to achieve harmony and order in infinite time and space in The Secret Garden.
