    Cross-layer schemes for performance optimization in wireless networks

    Wireless networks are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. As the application of wireless networks becomes broader, they are expected to not only provide ubiquitous connectivity, but also support end users with certain service guarantees. End-to-end delay is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric in multihop wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to minimize end-to-end delay through joint optimization of network layer routing and link layer scheduling. Two cross-layer schemes, a loosely coupled cross-layer scheme and a tightly coupled cross-layer scheme, are proposed. The two cross-layer schemes involve interference modeling in multihop wireless networks with omnidirectional antenna. In addition, based on the interference model, multicast schedules are optimized to minimize the total end-to-end delay. Throughput is another important QoS metric in wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented. Based on the interference model, routing, spatial multiplexing, and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. The throughput optimization problem is first addressed in constant bit rate networks and then in variable bit rate networks. In a variable data rate network, transmitters can use adaptive coding and modulation schemes to change their data rates so that the data rates are supported by the Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR).     Self-Regulatory Strategy Use, Efficacy, and Strategy-Situation-Fit in Self-Control Conflicts of Initiation, Persistence, and Inhibition

    Self-control is the ability to (1) initiate, and (2) persist in boring, difficult or disliked activity, and to (3) inhibit impulses to act. We explored the self-regulatory strategies that people use for these three types of self-control conflicts and their subjective efficacy as a function of conflict type. In addition, we hypothesized that people who more frequently create strategy-situation fit by tying strategies to the conflict types they are effective for, are more successful at self-control. A pilot study identified 22 different self-regulatory strategies that could be used for more than one type of self-control conflict. We then used a large data set from two pooled experience sampling datasets ( n = 14,067 reported self-control conflicts) to quantify these strategies’ popularity and subjective efficacy in daily life. Eight strategies were positively and three negatively associated with subjective self-regulatory success but subjective efficacy often depended on type of conflict: Some strategies were effective and some maladaptive only for some types of self-control conflicts. Individuals who created strategy-situation fit for some strategies also reported greater self-regulatory success, as hypothesized.     The Mindfully Embedded Classroom: An Investigation of the Mindfulness Traits, Philosophies, and Practices of High School Teachers

    The underlying impact of high school teachers’ mindfulness practices and philosophies in a classroom environment is investigated through a conceptual framework of self-identity, neuro-semantic language learning, attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and social cognitive theories. The purpose of this study is to determine if trait mindfulness is related to teacher demographics and to triangulate trait data with classroom observations and teacher interviews. 48 high school teachers in an urban comprehensive high school completed the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) with demographics. Six ‘highly mindful’ teachers participated in a semi-structured interview investigating their educational philosophy and conceptualizations of mindfulness, identity, teacher-student relationships, analyzed with a phenomenological approach. Classroom observations were conducted in these six classrooms using an observation protocol for effective communicative thoughtfulness and triangulated with interview responses. Findings show that underrepresented minority teachers reported lower scores in the FFMQ facet Non-judgment of Inner Experience than white teachers. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) teachers reported lower scores than humanities teacher in the Describing facet of the FFMQ. The age of the teacher and number of years of teaching experience was only correlated with the Observing facet of the FFMQ. The ‘highly mindful’ teacher participants fostered respectful authoritative classrooms with the teachers viewing themselves as mentors who are not solely focused on academic outcomes, viewed intelligence as functional, identified that language frames ones’ thoughts and names perceptions, and defined mindfulness as a shift in perspective not necessitating formal training. This study adds to the burgeoning literature of mindfulness research, provides insight to the experience and philosophies of teachers who self-report higher levels of mindfulness, and suggests strategies to improve teacher mindfulness with positive social and emotional outcomes for teachers and students alike

    Framework of Six Sigma implementation analysis on SMEs in Malaysia for information technology services, products and processes

    For the past two decades, the majority of Malaysia’s IT companies have been widely adopting a Quality Assurance (QA) approach as a basis for self-improvement and internal-assessment in IT project management. Quality Control (QC) is a comprehensive top-down observation approach used to fulfill requirements for quality outputs which focuses on the aspect of process outputs evaluation. However in the Malaysian context, QC and combination of QA and QC as a means of quality improvement approaches have not received significant attention. This research study aims to explore the possibility of integrating QC and QA+QC approaches through Six Sigma quality management standard to provide tangible and measureable business results by continuous process improvement to boost customer satisfactions. The research project adopted an exploratory case study approach on three Malaysian IT companies in the business area of IT Process, IT Service and IT Product. Semi-structured interviews, online surveys, self-administered questionnaires, job observations, document analysis and on-the-job-training are amongst the methodologies employed in these case studies. These collected data and viewpoints along with findings from an extensive literature review were used to benchmark quality improvement initiatives, best practices and to develop a Six Sigma framework for the context of the SMEs in the Malaysian IT industry. This research project contributed to both the theory and practice of implementing and integrating Six Sigma in IT products, services and processes. The newly developed framework has been proven capable of providing a general and fundamental start-up decision by demonstrating how a company with and without formal QIM can be integrated and implemented with Six Sigma practices to close the variation gap between QA and QC. This framework also takes into consideration those companies with an existing QIM for a new face-lift migration without having to drop their existing QIM. This can be achieved by integrating a new QIM which addresses most weaknesses of the current QIM while retaining most of the current business routine strengths. This framework explored how Six Sigma can be expanded and extended to include secondary external factors that are critical to successful QIM implementation. A vital segment emphasizes Six Sigma as a QA+QC approach in IT processes; and the ability to properly manage IT processes will result in overall performance improvement to IT Products and IT Services. The developed Six Sigma implementation framework can serve as a baseline for SMEs to better manage, control and track business performance and product quality; and at the same time creates clearer insights and un-biased views of Six Sigma implementation onto the IT industries to drive towards operational excellence

    Identifying and Reducing Risk of the Female Athlete Triad in Division I Athletes

    Physically active females, or female athletes, are at risk for the condition knownas the female athlete triad (Triad). The Triad is made up of three components that are distinctly separate, but intertwined: consuming inadequate energy for how much they are exercising, poor bone health, and problems with their menstrual periods. When female athletes don’t consume enough energy for how much they exercise, there can be hormonal imbalances, causing the body to conserve energy from some important functions including menstruation, and increased bone turnover resulting in a higher risk of stress fractures and early osteoporosis. Female athletes at risk for the Triad have ahigher risk of being injured, and don’t have the energy that they need to perform physically. To combat the Triad, we performed assessments to see how many female athletes were at risk for the Triad in Division I female athletes, and were surprised at the high number that were at risk for the Triad. We provided nutrition information and interventions aimed to decrease female athlete’s risk for the Triad. We also developed anew, quick method for female athletes, or busy individuals, to track their diet using the video feature on their cell phones. The benefits of providing nutrition information to the female athletes included: increasing their knowledge about the Triad, and things that they could do to prevent the Triad. The interventions did cause behavior change in some female athletes to increase how much energy they were consuming, decreasing their risk for the Triad

    Cutting Costs - Cutting Care: Can Texas Managed Health Care Systems and HMOs Be Liable for the Medical Malpractice of Physicians.

    One of the most common forms of managed health care is the health maintenance organization (HMO). An HMO is a quasi-insurance arrangement which provides health care to subscribers for a prepaid monthly fee. These have been attractive as they offer health care at lower cost to consumers. Health care brokers have developed four standard models of HMOs— “staff model,” “group model,” “network model,” and “independent practice association” (IPA) model. Given the degree of control HMOs exercise over member-physicians under any of the above models, Texas courts should hold HMOs liable for their member-physicians’ malpractice under the doctrine of vicarious liability, including respondeat superior, apparent agency, agency by estoppel, and nondelegable duties. In addition to vicarious liability for member-physicians\u27 malpractice, Texas HMOs should face direct liability for their own tortious conduct under the doctrine of corporate negligence. Texas courts use many legal tools to protect citizens from unreasonable risk of harm. Texans looking to medical brokers for health care face greater risks of harm from medical malpractice than patients in hospitals. Further, given the high degree of control HMOs exercise over patient care, subscribers face additional threats of harm due to improper action by the HMO itself. Texas courts have been vigilant in their efforts to protect hospital patients from the malpractice of physicians practicing in hospitals and the wrongful actions of the hospital itself. Implicitly, Texas courts have determined the minor financial burden on health care costs created by finding liability for medical negligence is vastly outweighed by the deterrent effects of such liability and the need to compensate victims. Therefore, no reason exists for refusing to protect Texans simply because they are receiving care from an HMO
