    The Project Scheduling Problem with Non-Deterministic Activities Duration: A Literature Review

    Purpose: The goal of this article is to provide an extensive literature review of the models and solution procedures proposed by many researchers interested on the Project Scheduling Problem with nondeterministic activities duration. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exhaustive literature review, identifying the existing models where the activities duration were taken as uncertain or random parameters. In order to get published articles since 1996, was employed the Scopus database. The articles were selected on the basis of reviews of abstracts, methodologies, and conclusions. The results were classified according to following characteristics: year of publication, mathematical representation of the activities duration, solution techniques applied, and type of problem solved. Findings: Genetic Algorithms (GA) was pointed out as the main solution technique employed by researchers, and the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as the most studied type of problem. On the other hand, the application of new solution techniques, and the possibility of incorporating traditional methods into new PSP variants was presented as research trends. Originality/value: This literature review contents not only a descriptive analysis of the published articles but also a statistical information section in order to examine the state of the research activity carried out in relation to the Project Scheduling Problem with non-deterministic activities duration.Peer Reviewe

    Project scheduling under undertainty – survey and research potentials.

    The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling assume complete information about the scheduling problem to be solved and a static deterministic environment within which the pre-computed baseline schedule will be executed. However, in the real world, project activities are subject to considerable uncertainty, that is gradually resolved during project execution. In this survey we review the fundamental approaches for scheduling under uncertainty: reactive scheduling, stochastic project scheduling, stochastic GERT network scheduling, fuzzy project scheduling, robust (proactive) scheduling and sensitivity analysis.     Robust Resource Allocations in Temporal Networks

    Temporal networks describe workflows of time-consuming tasks whose processing order is constrained by precedence relations. In many cases, the durations of the network tasks can be influenced by the assignment of resources. This leads to the problem of selecting an ‘optimal’ resource allocation, where optimality is measured by network characteristics such as the makespan (i.e., the time required to complete all tasks). In this paper, we study a robust resource allocation problem where the functional relationship between task durations and resource assignments is uncertain, and the goal is to minimise the worst-case makespan. We show that this problem is generically NP-hard. We then develop convergent bounds for the optimal objective value, as well as feasible allocations whose objective values are bracketed by these bounds.     Managing technology risk in R&D project planning: Optimal timing and parallelization of R&D activities.

    An inherent characteristic of R&D projects is technological uncertainty, which may result in project failure, and time and resources spent without any tangible return. In pharmaceutical projects, for instance, stringent scientific procedures have to be followed to ensure patient safety and drug efficacy in pre-clinical and clinical tests before a medicine can be approved for production. A project consists of several stages, and may have to be terminated in any of these stages, with typically a low likelihood of success. In project planning and scheduling, this technological uncertainty has typically been ignored, and project plans are developed only for scenarios in which the project succeeds. In this paper, we examine how to schedule projects in order to maximize their expected net present value, when the project activities have a probability of failure, and where an activity's failure leads to overall project termination. We formulate the problem, show that it is NP-hard and develop a branchand- bound algorithm that allows to obtain optimal solutions.     Solution and quality robust project scheduling: a methodological framework.

    The vast majority of the research efforts in project scheduling over the past several years has concentrated on the development of exact and suboptimal procedures for the generation of a baseline schedule assuming complete information and a deterministic environment. During execution, however, projects may be the subject of considerable uncertainty, which may lead to numerous schedule disruptions. Predictive-reactive scheduling refers to the process where a baseline schedule is developed prior to the start of the project and updated if necessary during project execution. It is the objective of this paper to review possible procedures for the generation of proactive (robust) schedules, which are as well as possible protected against schedule disruptions, and for the deployment of reactive scheduling procedures that may be used to revise or re-optimize the baseline schedule when unexpected events occur. We also offer a methodological framework that should allow project management to identify the proper scheduling methodology for different project scheduling environments.     Project Work Uncertainties and the Boundaries of the Firm

    The effective use of resources in an economy requires both that they are available where and when most needed and that they are kept employed as fully and effectively as possible. A lack of certainty over future resource needs within firms brings these two requirements into conflict. It is argued that the firm and the market offer alternative means of handling this trade-off. The market switches resource services between customers to keep specialist resources employed. However, this does not guarantee the firm that a resource will always be available when needed. The firm may therefore internalise resources, switching them between different tasks to keep them employed and to make their specialist capabilities available where most needed. Idiosyncratic advantages form an important part of the theory, often severely exacerbating resource availability issues.
