Building multi-layer social knowledge maps with google maps API
Google Maps is an intuitive online-map service which changes people's way of navigation on Geo-maps. People can explore the maps in a multi-layer fashion in order to avoid information overloading. This paper reports an innovative approach to extend the "power" of Google Maps to adaptive learning. We have designed and implemented a navigator for multi-layer social knowledge maps, namely ProgressiveZoom, with Google Maps API. In our demonstration, the knowledge maps are built from the Interactive System Design (ISD) course at the School of Information Science, University of Pittsburgh. Students can read the textbooks and reflect their individual and social learning progress in a context of pedagogical hierarchical structure

Algorithms, Automation, and News
This special issue examines the growing importance of algorithms and automation in the gathering, composition, and distribution of news. It connects a long line of research on journalism and computation with scholarly and professional terrain yet to be explored. Taken as a whole, these articles share some of the noble ambitions of the pioneering publications on ‘reporting algorithms’, such as a desire to see computing help journalists in their watchdog role by holding power to account. However, they also go further, firstly by addressing the fuller range of technologies that computational journalism now consists of: from chatbots and recommender systems, to artificial intelligence and atomised journalism. Secondly, they advance the literature by demonstrating the increased variety of uses for these technologies, including engaging underserved audiences, selling subscriptions, and recombining and re-using content. Thirdly, they problematize computational journalism by, for example, pointing out some of the challenges inherent in applying AI to investigative journalism and in trying to preserve public service values. Fourthly, they offer suggestions for future research and practice, including by presenting a framework for developing democratic news recommenders and another that may help us think about computational journalism in a more integrated, structured manner
Domain-specific queries and Web search personalization: some investigations
Major search engines deploy personalized Web results to enhance users'
experience, by showing them data supposed to be relevant to their interests.
Even if this process may bring benefits to users while browsing, it also raises
concerns on the selection of the search results. In particular, users may be
unknowingly trapped by search engines in protective information bubbles, called
"filter bubbles", which can have the undesired effect of separating users from
information that does not fit their preferences. This paper moves from early
results on quantification of personalization over Google search query results.
Inspired by previous works, we have carried out some experiments consisting of
search queries performed by a battery of Google accounts with differently
prepared profiles. Matching query results, we quantify the level of
personalization, according to topics of the queries and the profile of the
accounts. This work reports initial results and it is a first step a for more

Learning Visual Importance for Graphic Designs and Data Visualizations
Knowing where people look and click on visual designs can provide clues about
how the designs are perceived, and where the most important or relevant content
lies. The most important content of a visual design can be used for effective
summarization or to facilitate retrieval from a database. We present automated
models that predict the relative importance of different elements in data
visualizations and graphic designs. Our models are neural networks trained on
human clicks and importance annotations on hundreds of designs. We collected a
new dataset of crowdsourced importance, and analyzed the predictions of our
models with respect to ground truth importance and human eye movements. We
demonstrate how such predictions of importance can be used for automatic design
retargeting and thumbnailing. User studies with hundreds of MTurk participants
validate that, with limited post-processing, our importance-driven applications
are on par with, or outperform, current state-of-the-art methods, including
natural image saliency. We also provide a demonstration of how our importance
predictions can be built into interactive design tools to offer immediate
feedback during the design process
Words are Malleable: Computing Semantic Shifts in Political and Media Discourse
Recently, researchers started to pay attention to the detection of temporal
shifts in the meaning of words. However, most (if not all) of these approaches
restricted their efforts to uncovering change over time, thus neglecting other
valuable dimensions such as social or political variability. We propose an
approach for detecting semantic shifts between different viewpoints--broadly
defined as a set of texts that share a specific metadata feature, which can be
a time-period, but also a social entity such as a political party. For each
viewpoint, we learn a semantic space in which each word is represented as a low
dimensional neural embedded vector. The challenge is to compare the meaning of
a word in one space to its meaning in another space and measure the size of the
semantic shifts. We compare the effectiveness of a measure based on optimal
transformations between the two spaces with a measure based on the similarity
of the neighbors of the word in the respective spaces. Our experiments
demonstrate that the combination of these two performs best. We show that the
semantic shifts not only occur over time, but also along different viewpoints
in a short period of time. For evaluation, we demonstrate how this approach
captures meaningful semantic shifts and can help improve other tasks such as
the contrastive viewpoint summarization and ideology detection (measured as
classification accuracy) in political texts. We also show that the two laws of
semantic change which were empirically shown to hold for temporal shifts also
hold for shifts across viewpoints. These laws state that frequent words are
less likely to shift meaning while words with many senses are more likely to do
