    Branding and the risk management imperative

    In an increasingly risky socioeconomic environment, management needs to proactively consider brand-related risks. To understand brands as tools for risk management, they need to understand four types of brand risk: brand reputation risk, brand dilution risk, brand cannibalization risk and brand stretch risk. Risk management is not a natural act for brand managers trained in astute execution of the 4 Ps, and contemporary market factors make this more challenging still. With an increasingly polarized society, it is almost impossible for brands to remain untouched by ideologies. In addition, the growth in digital advertising gives brand managers less control over advertising placement and context, and the mandate to keep growing adds executional risk. The more exposed a brand is to brand risk, the more attention this topic will need in the boardroom. To shift a company’s marketing philosophy toward risk, it is important to define marketing competences in a broader way, to be self-critical and to be proactive.Published versio

    Information standards to support application and enterprise interoperability for the smart grid

There is a wide acceptance of the requirement for smarter grids to support such changes and accommodate variable injections from renewable energy sources. However the design templates are still emerging to manage the level of information required to meet challenges such as balancing, planning and market dynamics under this new paradigm. While secure and scalable cloud computing architectures may contribute to supporting the informatics challenges of the smart grid, this paper focuses on the essential need for business alignment with standardised information models such as the IEC Common Information Model (CIM), to leverage data value and control system interoperability.     Planar carbon nanotube-graphene hybrid films for high-performance broadband photodetectors

    Graphene has emerged as a promising material for photonic applications fuelled by its superior electronic and optical properties. However, the photoresponsivity is limited by the low absorption cross section and ultrafast recombination rates of photoexcited carriers. Here we demonstrate a photoconductive gain of ∌\sim 105^5 electrons per photon in a carbon nanotube-graphene one dimensional-two dimensional hybrid due to efficient photocarriers generation and transport within the nanostructure. A broadband photodetector (covering 400 nm to 1550 nm) based on such hybrid films is fabricated with a high photoresponsivity of more than 100 AW−1^{-1} and a fast response time of approximately 100 {\mu}s. The combination of ultra-broad bandwidth, high responsivities and fast operating speeds affords new opportunities for facile and scalable fabrication of all-carbon optoelectronic devices.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure

    Multi Agent Systems in Logistics: A Literature and State-of-the-art Review

    Based on a literature survey, we aim to answer our main question: ñ€ƓHow should we plan and execute logistics in supply chains that aim to meet todayñ€ℱs requirements, and how can we support such planning and execution using IT?ñ€ Todayñ€ℱs requirements in supply chains include inter-organizational collaboration and more responsive and tailored supply to meet specific demand. Enterprise systems fall short in meeting these requirements The focus of planning and execution systems should move towards an inter-enterprise and event-driven mode. Inter-organizational systems may support planning going from supporting information exchange and henceforth enable synchronized planning within the organizations towards the capability to do network planning based on available information throughout the network. We provide a framework for planning systems, constituting a rich landscape of possible configurations, where the centralized and fully decentralized approaches are two extremes. We define and discuss agent based systems and in particular multi agent systems (MAS). We emphasize the issue of the role of MAS coordination architectures, and then explain that transportation is, next to production, an important domain in which MAS can and actually are applied. However, implementation is not widespread and some implementation issues are explored. In this manner, we conclude that planning problems in transportation have characteristics that comply with the specific capabilities of agent systems. In particular, these systems are capable to deal with inter-organizational and event-driven planning settings, hence meeting todayñ€ℱs requirements in supply chain planning and execution.supply chain;MAS;multi agent systems

    Reasoning about the Reliability of Diverse Two-Channel Systems in which One Channel is "Possibly Perfect"

    This paper considers the problem of reasoning about the reliability of fault-tolerant systems with two "channels" (i.e., components) of which one, A, supports only a claim of reliability, while the other, B, by virtue of extreme simplicity and extensive analysis, supports a plausible claim of "perfection." We begin with the case where either channel can bring the system to a safe state. We show that, conditional upon knowing pA (the probability that A fails on a randomly selected demand) and pB (the probability that channel B is imperfect), a conservative bound on the probability that the system fails on a randomly selected demand is simply pA.pB. That is, there is conditional independence between the events "A fails" and "B is imperfect." The second step of the reasoning involves epistemic uncertainty about (pA, pB) and we show that under quite plausible assumptions, a conservative bound on system pfd can be constructed from point estimates for just three parameters. We discuss the feasibility of establishing credible estimates for these parameters. We extend our analysis from faults of omission to those of commission, and then combine these to yield an analysis for monitored architectures of a kind proposed for aircraft

    Optimising bandwidth over deep sub-micron interconnect.

    In deep sub-micron (DSM) circuits proper analysis of interconnect delay is very important. When relatively long wires are placed in parallel, it is essential to include the effects of cross-talk on delay. In a parallel wire structure, the exact spacing and size of the wires determine both the resistance and the distribution of the capacitance between the ground plane and the adjacent signal carrying conductors, and have a direct effect on the delay. Repeater insertion depending on whether it is optimal or constrained, affects the delay in different ways. Considering all these effects we show that there is a clear optimum configuration for the wires which maximises the total bandwidth. Our analysis is valid for lossy interconnects as are typical of wires in DSM technologies
